Angels 4, White Sox 0 at California (day game):
Posting his 40th career shutout, Nolan Ryan hurled the Angels to their sixth consecutive victory, beating the White Sox, 4-0. After permitting a single by Chet Lemon in the first inning and a single by Greg Pryor in the third inning, the fireballing righthander retired the final 20 men.

Indians 9, Tigers 7 at Cleveland (day game):
Gary Alexander, who hit a two-run double in the fifth inning, smashed a homer with a man on base in the ninth to lift the Indians to a 9-7 victory over the Tigers. Jason Thompson hit a grand-slam homer for the Tigers in the first inning.

Royals 5, Twins 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Taking advantage of Twins' misplays, the Royals posted a 5-1 victory. In the first inning, a throwing error by Twin shortstop Roy Smalley allowed a pair of runs to score. In the fourth, Twin center fielder Willie Norwood let two fly balls get away from him for triples, giving the Royals two more runs. George Brett clouted a solo homer in the fifth.

[DH] A's 7, Brewers 6 (day game) / A's 2, Brewers 1 at Oakland (night game):
The A's swept a doubleheader from the Brewers, winning the first game, 7-6, and capturing the second contest, 2-1. In the opener, the score was 6-6 going into the bottom of the ninth inning when singles by Jeff Newman, Mike Edwards and Wayne Gross enabled the A's to score the winning run. Dwayne Murphy drove home both A's runs in the second game, clouting a homer in the third inning and stroking a single in the fifth to score Rob Picciolo, who had hit a high fly ball down the right field line that Jim Wohlford dropped for a three-base error.

Rangers 6, Mariners 4 at Seattle (day game):
With Jim Kern pitching 3 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, the Rangers posted a 6-4 victory over the Mariners. The Rangers trailed, 4-3, going into the sixth inning but then erupted for three runs. With two out, singles by Mike Jorgensen and Jim Sundberg and a walk to Bump Wills loaded the bases. A single by Larvell Blanks delivered two runs and the final tally came across on a single by Johnny Grubb.

Orioles 6, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Orioles downed the Blue Jays, 6-2, behind the four-hit pitching of Dennis Martinez. Giants 8, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Homers by Bill Madlock, Darrell Evans and John Tamargo backed the three-hit pitching of Bob Knepper as the Giants topped the Braves, 8-1. Frisco took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Roger Metzger and made it 2-0 in the third on Madlock's round-tripper. In the fourth frame, Bill North drove home one run with a single and a single by Madlock plated two more. Evans and Tamargo clouted back-to-back homers in the sixth stanza.

Pirates 6, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):

[DH] Astros 1, Padres 0 (day game) / Astros 6, Padres 3 at Houston (day game):
The Astros swept a doubleheader from the Padres, winning the opener, 1-0, and capturing the nightcap, 6-3. In the lidlifter, Terry Puhl smacked Gaylord Perry's second pitch of the game over the left field wall for the contest's only run. Rick Williams, the winner of the duel, walked one and struck out two in going the distance for the first time in his major league career. In the second game, the Astros took advantage of the Padres' loose play to score five runs in the eighth inning. In that frame, after Denny Walling walked and took third on a single by Craig Reynolds, Padre center fielder Gene Richards dropped a sacrifice fly by Cesar Cedeno as both runners scored. A walk to Bob Watson, single by Enos Cabell, error by Fernando Gonzalez and single by Art Howe added three other tallies.

Mets 8, Cardinals 7 at New York (day game):
Driving in five runs, Richie Hebner sparked the Mets to an 8-7 triumph over the Cardinals in 11 innings. Hebner hit a two-run double in the first inning and clouted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to tie the score after the Cards had plated three tallies in the top of the frame. Joel Youngblood led off the Mets' 11th with a double to left and moved to third on a bunt single by Doug Flynn. After a forceout at second base, an intentional walk to Steve Henderson loaded the sacks. Frank Taveras then rapped the ball into left field for the game-winning single.

Expos 10, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (day game):
