Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 3, Yankees 1 at Detroit (night game):
With Jack Billingham outpitching Yankee ace Ron Guidry, the Tigers posted a 3-1 triumph over the Yankees. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh when Ron LeFlore doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice by Lou Whitaker and scored on a single by Steve Kemp. A homer by Lance Parrish in the eighth added an insurance run.

Mariners 12, Royals 7 at Kansas City (night game):
Bombarding four Kansas City pitchers for 15 hits, the Mariners posted a 12-7 victory over the Royals. After spotting the Royals a 4-0 first-inning bulge, the Mariners bounded back to take the lead for good in the third frame, the big blows being a two-run double by Ruppert Jones and three-run homer by Willie Horton. George Brett knocked in three runs for the Royals with a triple in the first inning and two-run homer in the seventh. It was the 10th straight game in which he has scored at least one run, a club record.

Twins 7, Rangers 6 at Texas (night game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning carried the Twins to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Rangers. The Twins trailed, 6-4, entering the ninth when Jose Morales began the winning surge with a single. Sparky Lyle replaced starter Jon Matlack on the mound for the Rangers and gave up singles to Butch Wynegar, pinch-hitter Willie Norwood and John Castino to tie the score. Jim Kern relieved Lyle and was greeted by a single by Hosken Powell that drove in the winning run. Roy Smalley's hitting streak was stopped at 19 games.

Blue Jays 8, Indians 1 at Toronto (day game):
Erupting for five runs in the fourth inning, the Blue Jays went on to an 8-1 triumph over the Indians behind the seven-hit pitching of Dave Lemanczyk. With the Jays trailing, 1-0, and one out in the fourth, Rico Carty doubled, John Mayberry walked and Al Woods singled to fill the bases. A double by Rick Bosetti scored Carty and Mayberry and a sacrifice fly by Rick Cerone plated Woods. An RBI single by DAnny Ainge and run-scoring triple by Alfredo Griffin completed the big inning.

Braves 7, Astros 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Recovering from a four-run Houston first inning, the Braves came back to gain a 7-5 decision over the Astros. The Braves trailed, 4-3, going into the bottom of the fifth, when Gary Matthews led off with a double and went to third as Jeff Burroughs reached first base on an error by Astro third baseman Enos Cabell. One out later, Bob Horner drilled the ball over the left field fence. Matthews also homered for the Braves.

Pirates 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
Willie Stargell belted his seventh homer in the last nine games to snap a 2-2 tie and give Bert Blyleven his first victory of the season as the Pirates edged the Expos, 4-2. Stargell's homer came in the fifth inning. Omar Moreno and Ed Ott also homered for the Pirates.

Phillies 5, Cardinals 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Schmidt cracked his 11th homer in the month of May and 15th of the season to break a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth inning of the Phillies' 5-3 victory over the Cardinals. Schmidt smashed the first pitch of the inning delivered by Redbird starter John Denny. The Phils added another run in the fifth when Del Unser walked, went to third on a single by Tim McCarver and scored on a pinch-single by Ramon Aviles. The Cards had taken a 3-0 lead with Keith Hernandez accounting for a pair with a single and homer. The Phils tied the contest in the fourth on a two-run double by Unser and run-scoring two-bagger by Rudy Meoli.

Padres 3, Dodgers 2 at San Diego (night game):
Kurt Bevacqua's single to left with one out in the ninth inning plated Ozzie Smith with the winning run as the Padres squeezed past the Dodgers, 3-2. Eric Rasmussen permitted only five hits in going the distance to gain his first victory of the season. The score was tied, 2-2, going into the Padres' ninth when Smith led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After starter-loser Andy Messersmith issued an intentional pass to Gene Richards, Bevacqua stroked his game-winning hit.
