Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 7, Orioles 5 at Baltimore (night game):
A seven-run explosion in the second inning propelled the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Orioles. All runs in big frame came after two were out. A double by Butch Hobson, walk to George Scott and single by Dwight Evans produced the first tally. Run-scoring singles by Gary Allenson, Jerry Remy and Rick Burleson then preceded a three-run homer by Fred Lynn that capped the outburst.
White Sox 5, A's 4 at Chicago (night game):
A two-run homer by Jorge Orta in the eighth inning brought the White Sox from behind to gain a 5-4 decision over the A's. The White Sox trailed, 4-3, going into the bottom of the eighth when Lamar Johnson stroked a leadoff single. Joe Gates, running for Johnson, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored when Orta clouted his homer.
Yankees 12, Tigers 8 at Detroit (night game):
Scoring eight runs in the third inning, the Yankees hung on to post a 12-8 victory over the Tigers. The Yankee outburst began with a double by Mickey Rivers. A walk to Willie Randolph and single by Graig Nettles loaded the bases. A walk to Reggie Jackson forced in the first run and a single by Chris Chambliss drove home two more and sent Tiger starter Mark Fidrych to the showers. Roy White doubled in one run, Jay Johnstone followed with a two-run single, a sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent added another and a single by Randolph plated the final marker.
Mariners 12, Royals 11 at Kansas City (night game):
In a wild slugfest that went 12 innings, the Mariners edged the Royals, 12-11, on a triple by Julio Cruz and single by Ruppert Jones. The Royals had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on six singles and an error with the final two runs of the frame driven home on a two-out single by U.L. Washington. Bruce Bochte paced the Mariner attack with a homer, triple, two singles and six RBIs.
Brewers 7, Angels 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Yielding only five hits, four to Dan Ford, Lary Sorensen pitched the Brewers to a 7-1 triumph over the Angels. Molitor had a two-run single in the fifth frame as the Brewers tallied five times with Ben Oglivie, Dick Davis and Sal Bando each delivering an RBI hit.
Rangers 4, Twins 3 at Texas (night game):
A homer by Buddy Bell in the eighth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and enabled the Rangers to edge the Twins, 4-3. Bell's blast was his first this season. Jim Kern, in relief of starter Steve Comer, pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to gain the victory and raise his record to 6-0.
Indians 8, Blue Jays 6 at Toronto (night game):
A grand slam by Andre Thornton highlighted the Indians' 8-6 victory over the Blue Jays. The score was 1-1 in the third inning when Thornton unloaded after Bobby Bonds reached base on a fielder's choice, Paul Dade singled and Rick Manning drew an intentional walk.
