Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Angels 1 at Chicago (night game):
Ross Baumgarten allowed only one hit before walking two batters in the ninth inning when Randy Scarbery relieved and retired the side to complete the White Sox' 6-1 victory over the Angels. The only Angel run was unearned, scoring in the sixth on a two-base error by Claudell Washington, an infield out and a sacrifice fly by Don Baylor. Bobby Grich doubled in the seventh for the Angels' lone hit. The White Sox were led at bat by Lamar Johnson, who drove in four runs with a triple, double and single.

Brewers 3, A's 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Sixto Lezcano, who had missed six games with a sore thumb, made a smashing return to the Brewers' lineup, hitting two homers and then walking and scoring the run that beat the A's, 3-2. After the A's counted their pair in the second inning on a double by Jim Essian, pass to Wayne Gross and singles by Rob Picciolo and Dwayne Murphy, Lezcano tied the score with his circuit clouts, one in the home half of the second and the other in the sixth. Then, in the eighth after drawing a walk, Lezcano scored the winning run on singles by Paul Molitor and Gorman Thomas.

Royals 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
With 11 saves and seven victories already to his credit, Mike Marshall was unable to stave off the Royals and drew his fourth defeat when the Twins lost, 4-3. Marshall relieved Roger Erickson in the seventh inning with the Twins leading, 3-2. The Royals tied the score in the eighth with a double by Amos Otis and single by Pete LaCock and won in the ninth when Willie Wilson tripled and Otis singled.

[DH] Mariners 3, Rangers 2 (night game) / Mariners 5, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
After hitting three singles in the first game, Leon Roberts smashed a two-run homer in the second game to help the Mariners sweep a doubleheader with the Rangers, 3-2 and 5-3. In the opener, two walks and a single by Bruce Bochte produced the Mariners' initial run in the third inning. Other tallies followed in the fourth on singles by Dan Meyer, Roberts and Julio Cruz and an infield out by Larry Cox. The Rangers had a homer by Mike Jorgensen in the seventh before a rally for another run in the ninth was stopped by Shane Rawley, who gained his fifth save. Roberts' homer in the second inning of the nightcap tied the score at 2-2. The Mariners went ahead with an unearned run on an error by Bump Wills in the third, and pushed over another run in the fifth when Ruppert Jones walked, stole second and Willie Horton singled. Bochte drove across an insurance run with a single in the ninth before Richie Zisk homered in the Rangers' half.

Dodgers 17, Reds 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers tied their club record for most homers in one game with seven while piling up 20 hits in a 17-6 victory over the Reds. For a while in the eighth inning, players on both teams turned their attention from hitting baseballs to hitting one another as three different brawls broke out. The Dodgers began their cannonading in the second inning with homers by Dusty Baker and Rick Sutcliffe. Joe Ferguson hit a three-run double in the third before the Dodgers resumed homer-hitting with two-run blasts by Steve Garvey and Gary Thomasson and a solo swat by Ferguson in the fourth. Derrel Thomas joined the slugging procession with a leadoff drive in the sixth and Davey Lopes accounted for the Dodgers' seventh homer, connecting with two men on base. The Reds were able to counter the Dodgers' power with only one homer by Ken Griffey.

Pirates 3, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Dense fog forced the umpires to call off the game between the Pirates and Mets with the score tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the 11th inning. After Joel Youngblood got a triple on a routine fly that Pirate left fielder Bill Robinson was unable to locate in the murk, the umpires stopped play with the hope that the fog would lift. However, after waiting 78 minutes, the game was called off. It was replayed in its entirety at a later date, but the individual player statistics stand. The Pirates took a 3-1 lead in the eighth on a two-run pinch-homer by Mike Easler, triple by Omar Moreno and throwing error by Willie Montanez, but the Mets rallied to tie the score in the ninth with a single by Youngblood, double by Lee Mazzilli and single by John Stearns.

Cubs 3, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Bruce Sutter pulled Lynn McGlothen out of a jam with two men on base in the ninth inning and retired the side to save the Cubs' 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Bill Buckner, who had four hits for the Cubs, doubled in the third inning and scored on a single by Dave Kingman. That would have been enough, but the Cubs insured their victory when Jerry Martin walked and Barry Foote homered for two more runs in the fourth.

Padres 2, Astros 1 at San Diego (night game):
A tight game wound up with the Padres scoring an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the 10th inning to defeat the Astros, 2-1. Fernando Gonzalez homered for the Padres in the second to put Gaylord Perry ahead in his duel with Rick Williams, but the Astros tied the score in the ninth with a pinch-double by Denny Walling, an error and an infield single by Terry Puhl. Rollie Fingers took over for the Padres in the 10th and was the winner when Joe Sambito, pitching in relief for the Astros, beat himself. Sambito hit Gene Richards with a pitch and threw wildly on a bunt by Barry Evans, allowing Richards to reach third. Dan Briggs then hit the first pitch to him for a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Richards.

Giants 6, Braves 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Willie McCovey, Mike Sadek and Bob Knepper hit homers in the fourth inning and Jack Clark added another in the eighth to power the Giants to a 6-4 victory over the Braves. Joining in the longball barrage, the Braves scored all their runs on homers, getting a three-run drive by Jeff Burroughs and a solo shot by Bob Horner to take a 4-1 lead in the fourth. The Giants came slugging back in their half. McCovey led with a circuit clout and Bill Madlock followed with a single. Then, after two outs, Sadek and Knepper homered in succession. Knepper's drive was the first of his major league career for the Giants' pitcher. With five between them, the Braves and Giants tied the major league record for most homers by two clubs in one inning.
