Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 8, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Angels erupted for four runs in the fourth inning and added three more in the fifth to snap their four-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the White Sox. In the fourth, Willie Aikens walked, Dan Ford doubled and both scored on a single by Brian Downing. Bobby Grich followed with a double, driving in Downing. After a sacrifice by Bert Campaneris, Carney Lansford singled to score Grich. In the fifth, Aikens walked and crossed the plate on a double by Ford. Grich walked and, after a passed ball, Rick Miller singled to drive in Ford and Grich.

Indians 8, Yankees 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Tommy John's string of nine victories was broken when the Indians handed the Yankee lefthander his first defeat of the season, 8-4. John had not given up a homer this year until Bobby Bonds whacked his second pitch of the game over the center field wall. Gary Alexander also homered in the fourth. The Indians chased John in the fifth when Bonds doubled, stopped at third on a single by Rick Manning and scored on a two-bagger by Andre Thornton. After Ray Burris replaced John, Manning counted on an error by Bucky Dent. Cliff Johnson hit a two-run homer for the Yankees.

Orioles 7, Tigers 5 at Detroit (day game):
In five-hour, 17-minute struggle, the Orioles gained their 26th victory in their last 32 games when Lee May knocked in two runs with a single in the 16th inning to defeat the Tigers, 7-5. The Orioles used five pitchers, who struck out 16 batters among them. Five hurlers for the Tigers fanned 14. In the early going, Al Bumbry homered for one of his five hits in the game and Eddie Murray stroked a three-run double for the Orioles, who held a 5-3 lead going into the last half of the ninth when the Tigers rallied to tie the score with a homer by Steve Kemp, singles by Rusty Staub and Jason Thompson, a sacrifice by Lance Parrish and an error by Oriole reliever Don Stanhouse on a slow roller by Jerry Morales. The deadlock persisted until the 16th when Benny Ayala singled for the Orioles with one out and Murray doubled. After an intentional pass to Gary Roenicke, May rapped his winning single.

Brewers 8, A's 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
A pair of four-run innings enabled the Brewers to extend their winning streak to five games with an 8-4 victory over the A's. After being held to two singles through the first five frames, the Brewers erupted against Rick Langford in the sixth when Jim Gantner and Robin Yount singled and Cecil Cooper and Dick Davis followed with successive homers. Cooper and Davis singled to ignite another four-run outburst by the Brewers in the eighth. After a wild pitch, Ben Oglivie drove in both runners with a single. Two passes then filled the bases and two more runs scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Gorman Thomas and single by Gantner. The A's had a four-run inning of their own in the ninth, three scoring on a homer by Jeff Newman.

Royals 7, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Willie Wilson and Todd Cruz batted in five runs between them to pace the Royals to a 7-4 victory over the Twins. Wilson hit three singles, each driving in a run, while Cruz accounted for two RBIs with a pair of doubles. John Castino hit a two-run homer for the Twins.

Rangers 2, Mariners 1 at Texas (night game):
Jon Matlack, who turned in his second complete game of the season, won over Glenn Abbott in a six-hit duel when the Rangers defeated the Mariners, 2-1. Matlack gave up the M's run in the second inning on a single by Willie Horton, double by Leon Roberts and single by Dan Meyer. The Rangers came up with the matching tally in the fourth when Al Oliver doubled and Jim Sundberg singled. Then, in the fifth, Bump Wills singled and raced home on a double by Johnny Grubb to score the deciding run.

Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 6 at Toronto (day game):
After two were out in the ninth inning, Alfredo Griffin and Bob Bailor singled and Roy Howell followed with a homer to lift the Blue Jays to a 7-6 victory over the Red Sox. A homer by John Mayberry and pair of run-scoring singles by Rick Cerone paced the Blue Jays to an early 4-0 lead before the Red Sox rallied to tie the score in the seventh with the aid of a three-run homer by Butch Hobson. The Red Sox then went ahead in the top half of the ninth with a pair of tallies on a single by Gary Allenson, pass to Jerry Remy and two-out single by Rick Burleson, but Bill Campbell failed to hold the lead after apparently having the victory wrapped up.

Reds 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Fred Norman turned in his first complete game since April 20 and pitched the Reds to a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers. Reggie Smith doubled and scored on singles by Steve Garvey and Dusty Baker for the Dodgers' run in the fourth inning. Ken Griffey tied the score with a homer off Don Sutton in the sixth and the Reds then won with two runs in the seventh. Dan Driessen singled and came home on a double by Johnny Bench. After a single by Ray Knight, Bench also scored when Davey Lopes threw wildly on a grounder by Dave Collins.

Mets 10, Pirates 8 at New York (day game):
A two-run homer by Steve Henderson in the seventh inning not only was the Mets' deciding blow in a 10-8 victory over the Pirates, but it also enabled Skip Lockwood to end his personal string of 14 straight defeats. The Mets' reliever lost his last nine decisions in '78 and his first five this year. After Henderson's homer put the Mets ahead, 9-8, Joel Youngblood provided an insurance run with a circuit clout in the eighth. Omar Moreno drove in four runs, his major league career high, for the Pirates, who left 15 men on base.

Cubs 4, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Dick Tidrow, obtained from the Yankees, gained credit for his first N. L. save with three innings of no-hit relief as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 4-1. Bob Boone homered off Cub starter Dennis Lamp for the Phillies' run in the third inning. The Cubs, after knotting the count with the aid of an error by Greg Luzinski, broke the tie with two runs in the seventh. Jerry Martin and Mick Kelleher singled to chase Larry Christenson. Tug McGraw, in relief, walked Mike Vail to load the bases and then was tagged for run-scoring singles by Ivan DeJesus and Ted Sizemore.

Astros 9, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Joe Niekro posted his third shutout of the season and Jeff Leonard drove in five runs to escort the Astros to a 9-0 victory over the Padres. Leonard accounted for his first RBI with a single in the first inning and added two-run singles in the second and fourth. Jose Cruz contributed a homer to the Astros' attack.

Braves 5, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
After knocking in two runs with a homer in the third inning, Gary Matthews batted in another pair with a single in the ninth to give the Braves a 5-4 victory over the Giants. The Braves' other run came on a single by Pepe Frias in the fourth, but the Giants, after trailing, 3-0, pecked away and went ahead in the eighth when Bill Madlock homered. In the Braves' ninth, Charlie Spikes hit a pinch-double and Jerry Royster was safe when losing pitcher Dave Roberts fumbled his bunt. Mike Lum then sacrificed before Matthews hit his winning single.
