Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 6, Indians 1 at Chicago (day game):
Notching his fifth straight victory, Ken Kravec unfurled a three-hitter in pitching the White Sox to a 6-1 verdict over the Indians. Alan Bannister opened the Sox second inning with a single and Lamar Johnson walked. A double by Rusty Torres scored Bannister and a sacrifice fly by Greg Pryor plated Johnson. An RBI single by Bill Nahorodny in the fourth and RBI single by Bannister in the fifth added to the margin. Nahorodny clouted a solo homer in the eighth.
Royals 5, Orioles 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Hitting for the cycle for the first time in his career, George Brett collected his fifth hit and second homer of the game leading off the 16th inning, lifting the Royals to a 5-4 triumph over the Orioles. A solo homer by Ken Singleton in the ninth inning had tied the contest. Brett's first round-tripper was a two-run shot in the eighth inning that gave the Royals a 4-3 lead.
Yankees 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
A two-out solo homer by Mickey Rivers in the 10th inning lifted the Yankees to a 2-1 triumph over the Brewers. The Brewers had tied the contest in the seventh inning on a pair of mental lapses by Yankee starter Jim Beattie, who permitted a steal of third while staring at the plate and then failed to make a throw on an infield chopper. Rookie reliever Ron Davis gained credit for his first major league win.
Twins 10, A's 7 at Minnesota (day game):
Stroking three hits including a two-run homer, Roy Smalley drove in four runs to pace the Twins to a 10-7 victory over the A's. Smalley's round-tripper came in the first inning. In the seventh inning, with the score 6-6, the Twins erupted for four markers on a two-run double by Smalley, RBI single by John Castino and a bases-loaded walk.
Rangers 5, Red Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
Getting relief help from Sparky Lyle, Fergie Jenkins got credit for his sixth victory of the season as the Rangers posted a 5-2 decision over the Red Sox. A two-run homer by Al Oliver gave the Texans a first-inning lead. After the Sox tied the score, Bump Wills singled to open the fifth frame, moved to third on an infield hit by Johnny Grubb and a throwing error by losing pitcher Steve Renko, and scored when Buddy Bell bounced into a double play. Wills singled home a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
Tigers 6, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
Newly-acquired outfielder Champ Summers belted a homer, stroked two singles and scored twice to spark the Tigers to a 6-2 triumph over the Blue Jays. Summers ignited a three-run second inning with his round-tripper. A single by Lance Parrish, error by Jay center fielder Rick Bosetti and RBI singles by Aurelio Rodriguez and Lynn Jones capped the frame. The Tigers added singletons in the third on an RBI single by Jason Thompson, in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez and in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Rusty Staub.
Reds 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
A bases-loaded single by Ray Knight in the 13th inning drove in two runs and gave the Reds a 3-2 triumph over the Dodgers. Ken Griffey opened the 13th with a walk and Dave Concepcion singled. After two batters were retired, Dan Driessen walked to load the bases and Knight followed with his single to center. The Dodgers bounced back in the bottom of the frame with one run on a double by Gary Thomasson and a single by Davey Lopes. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the 10th inning on a solo homer by Driessen, but the Dodgers tied it in their half on a solo blast by Reggie Smith.
Pirates 6, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
Driving in three runs with a single and homer, Bill Robinson paced the Pirates to a 6-1 decision over the Mets. The first Buc run came in the first inning when Tim Foli singled, stole second and scored on a single by Robinson. Dave Parker led off the fourth frame with a two-base hit and came home when Robinson drilled a 1-1 pitch into the left field bullpen to break the 1-1 tie.
Cubs 4, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A pair of homers by Bobby Murcer and the first N. L. victory by Dick Tidrow highlighted the Cubs' 4-1 triumph over the Phillies. Murcer tied the score at 1-1 with a solo homer in the seventh inning and connected again in the ninth off reliever Ron Reed with Jerry Martin on base. The Cubs snapped the 1-1 tie in the eighth on a pinch-single by Sam Mejias, a forceout and a triple by Bill Buckner. Tidrow yielded only one run in five innings of relief.
Padres 5, Astros 4 at San Diego (night game):
Knocking home three runs with a pair of singles, Dave Winfield led the Padres to a 5-4 victory over the Astros. The Padres took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Winfield, and he stroked a run-scoring single in the sixth frame to produce an insurance marker.
Braves 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Pitching his second career complete game, Mickey Mahler hurled the Braves to a 4-1 triumph over the Giants as a three-run homer by Glenn Hubbard was the big blow. The Braves tallied an unearned run in the fourth inning and Hubbard broke the game open in the sixth stanza.
