White Sox 4, Indians 2 at Chicago (night game):
Scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings, the White Sox held on for a 4-2 victory over the Indians. An infield hit by Alan Bannister, walk to Lamar Johnson and double by Bill Nahorodny produced the fourth-inning markers. Johnson led off the sixth with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Mike Squires, who stole second and scored on a single by Milt May. After Greg Pryor singled, Sid Monge relieved Eric Wilkins on the mound and yielded a run-scoring single to Rusty Torres.

Orioles 8, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Jim Palmer, with relief help from Tippy Martinez, pitched the Orioles to an 8-1 victory over the Royals. A bases-loaded single by Rich Dauer in the second inning produced the Orioles' first two runs. Ken Singleton clouted a two-run homer in the third, Dauer smacked a solo blast in the fourth and Gary Roenicke and Lee May slammed back-to-back homers in the ninth.

Brewers 7, Yankees 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Cecil Cooper drove in three runs with a pair of homers and a single to pace the Brewers to a 7-3 victory over the Yankees. Cooper's first round-tripper accounted for the Brewers' first run in the fourth inning and he led off the sixth with a circuit clout that put the Brewers ahead to stay. The Brewers added three runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Robin Yount and Cooper's RBI single.

Angels 6, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Driving in three runs with a single and double, Bobby Grich sparked the Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Mariners. Grich singled home a run in the fifth inning and added a two-run double in the seventh. Jim Barr, making his third straight start of the season, went seven innings to raise his record to 3-0. Dave LaRoche hurled the last two frames to record his fifth save.

Tigers 9, Blue Jays 8 at Toronto (night game):
A run-scoring single by Lance Parrish in the eighth inning enabled the Tigers to edge the Blue Jays, 9-8, after a see-saw battle. Lou Whitaker opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Steve Kemp and tallied on Parrish's blow. The Blue Jays had overcome an 8-5 deficit with a three-run rally in the seventh, the key hits being doubles by Rick Bosetti and Danny Ainge.

Astros 2, Reds 1 at Houston (night game):
A pinch-hit single by Denny Walling in the ninth inning lifted the Astros to a 2-1 triumph over the Reds as southpaw Randy Niemann earned his first major league victory. Craig Reynolds opened the Astro ninth with a single and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Cesar Cedeno. After Doug Bair relieved starter Paul Moskau on the hill for the Reds, Jose Cruz was issued an intentional walk. Walling, batting for Art Howe, then laced the winning hit.

Dodgers 6, Giants 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run outburst in the bottom of the ninth inning enabled the Dodgers to gain a 6-5 victory from the Giants. The Dodgers trailed, 5-3, when Davey Lopes drew a one-out walk off reliever Gary Lavelle and Bill Russell singled, sending Lopes to second. Lopes stole third and scored on a single by Reggie Smith. Tom Griffin, replacing Lavelle, walked Steve Garvey to load the bases before being removed in favor of Dave Roberts. Pinch-hitter Steve Yeager then surprised the Giants by beating out a bunt to score Russell with the tying run. Dusty Baker followed with a line shot that dropped safely in center for a single as the winning run scored.

Expos 9, Phillies 0 at Montreal (night game):
Tossing his second consecutive shutout, Steve Rogers pitched the Expos to a 9-0 triumph over the Phillies. After a two-run double by Chris Speier in the second inning, the Expos broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the fifth. Rogers led off with a single, Andre Dawson sacrificed and Rodney Scott singled to set up a two-run double by Warren Cromartie. One out later, Ellis Valentine unloaded a two-run homer.

Pirates 8, Cubs 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Homers by Dave Parker and Phil Garner highlighted a 15-hit attack as the Pirates routed the Cubs, 8-0. The Bucs scored two runs in the first inning on a wild pickoff attempt by Cub pitcher Ken Holtzman and a run-scoring single by Willie Stargell. Garner hit a solo homer in the second stanza. Parker clouted a bases-empty round-tripper in the seventh and doubled home a pair of runs to cap a four-run eighth.

[DH] Padres 6, Braves 3 (night game) / Padres 3, Braves 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Braves, winning the first game, 6-3, and capturing the second game, 3-2. In the opener, a triple by Gene Tenace highlighted a three-run fifth inning that sparked the Padres to victory. A walk to Gene Richards and single by Winfield preceded Tenace's three-bagger. Tenace tallied on a single by Mike Hargrove. In the nightcap, a single by Ozzie Smith in the eighth inning drove home the winning run. Bob Owchinko began the decisive surge by beating out an infield hit and Richards then drew a walk. Bill Almon ran for Owchinko and scored when Smith grounded the first pitch from Phil Niekro into right field.

Mets 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Erupting for four runs in the seventh inning, the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 6-2. The Mets trailed, 2-1, when Lee Mazzilli opened the seventh with a double, moved to third on a long flyout by Richie Hebner and scored on a single by Willie Montanez. John Stearns and Steve Henderson followed with successive doubles and Doug Flynn climaxed the rally with a single.
