Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 6, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
A four-run outburst in the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run homer by Ron Pruitt and a pair of wild pitches, propelled the Indians to a 6-4 triumph over the White Sox. The Tribe trailed, 3-2, when Rick Manning opened the fifth with a single, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. After a walk to Andre Thornton, the Indians went ahead on Pruitt's first homer of the season. Another run on a grounder by Duane Kuiper capped the uprising.

Royals 2, Orioles 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run homer by Amos Otis was all the Royals needed to down the Orioles, 2-1, behind the combined five-hit pitching of Rich Gale and Al Hrabosky. George Brett singled with one out in the first inning. and Otis then delivered his third round-tripper of the season. The Orioles' only marker came on a bases-loaded walk in the third inning.

Yankees 5, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Yankees scored three runs in the 11th inning to defeat the Brewers, 5-2, in a game marred by a violent collision between the Yankees' Cliff Johnson and plate umpire Lou DiMuro. Graig Nettles opened the Yankees' 11th with a single, Johnson walked and Chris Chambliss beat out a bunt to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Juan Beniquez scored Nettles and moved Johnson to third. Bucky Dent then flied to center, scoring Johnson, whose momentum propelled him into a jarring crash with DiMuro. The umpire had to be taken off the field by an ambulance. Later, a hospital examination revealed no serious injury. Johnson suffered an apparent thumb injury on the play. After the delay, Rivers doubled in the third run of the inning.

A's 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
A wild pitch by Mike Marshall provided the ultimate winning run as the A's edged the Twins, 5-4. The score was 3-3 going into the seventh when Glenn Burke and Larry Murray stroked singles and brought on Marshall in relief of starter Roger Erickson. Burke was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Dwayne Murphy, but Mitchell Page singled to right, scoring Murray and advancing Murphy to third. Marshall then uncorked a wild pitch and Murphy scored.

Angels 3, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
The Angels edged the Mariners, 3-2, behind the three-hit, 12-strikeout pitching of Nolan Ryan. The Angels scored their winning run in the ninth inning. Brian Downing stroked a leadoff single, stole second and took third as Merv Rettenmund grounded out. On a suicide squeeze, Downing scored as Bert Campaneris beat out the bunt for a hit.

Rangers 3, Red Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
Reliever Jim Kern improved his record to 7-0 as the Rangers gained a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox in 10 innings. Al Oliver singled in the extra frame and moved to second on a sacrifice by Billy Sample. Pat Putnam received an intentional walk and Richie Zisk followed with a single to right for the winning run. Kern worked four innings and lowered his ERA to 1.09.

Tigers 8, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
The Tigers reached the .500 mark for the first time since April 26 by pounding the Blue Jays, 8-2, behind a five-hitter by Milt Wilcox. The Tigers took the lead to stay in the fourth inning on an error by Jay third baseman Roy Howell and a sacrifice fly by Lou Whitaker. Lance Parrish clouted a homer in the eighth and the Tigers added three more runs in the ninth on a two-run double by Aurelio Rodriguez and sacrifice fly by Alan Trammell.

Astros 6, Reds 3 at Houston (night game):
With support from Cesar Cedeno, who accounted for three runs, Joe Niekro gained his sixth victory in the month of May when the Astros defeated the Reds, 6-3. After hitting a single for a tally in the first inning, Cedeno homered in the third and received credit for his third RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

Dodgers 6, Giants 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Giants went down to their fifth straight defeat, losing to the Dodgers, 6-5. Ted Martinez stroked a single in the eighth and scored the winning run on a double by Dusty Baker. The Giants had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh with a homer by Bill Madlock, but the Dodgers tied it in the bottom of the frame when Davey Lopes hit for the circuit.

Expos 2, Phillies 0 at Montreal (night game):
Shutting out the Phillies for the second successive night, the Expos posted a 2-0 triumph behind the six-hit pitching of Bill Lee. The only runs of the game came in the second inning on a single by Tony Perez and a homer by Gary Carter.

Pirates 9, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Posting their 10th victory in the last 13 games, the Pirates routed the Cubs, 9-2. The Bucs scored four runs in the first inning on a triple, five singles and a sacrifice fly. After Willie Stargell clouted a homer in the fifth, the Pirates scored three times in the seventh, one on a single by Stargell and two on a pinch-homer by Bill Robinson. Robinson stayed in the game and drove in another run with a single in the eighth.

Padres 10, Braves 2 at San Diego (night game):
Bob Shirley allowed only three hits in eight innings of shutout relief as the Padres defeated the Braves, 10-2. Shirley took over for starter Mickey Lolich in the second inning when the veteran southpaw complained of a sore shoulder after walking the first batter of the frame. Dave Winfield, who led the Padre offense with five RBIs, singled home two runs in the third inning and climaxed a seven-run fifth with a three-run homer.

Cardinals 7, Mets 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Lou Brock knocked in three runs with a homer, single and sacrifice fly to pace the Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the Mets. Ted Simmons iced the game with a three-run homer in the seventh following walks to Jerry Mumphrey and Keith Hernandez.
