Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 7, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Andre Thornton, who had a perfect night at the plate with a walk and four hits, led the Indians to a 7-4 victory over the Angels. The Indians broke away with four runs in the first inning on a homer by Toby Harrah, pass to Thornton, single by Rick Manning, double by Gary Alexander and single by Ted Cox. Thornton then accounted for the Indians' winning margin, doubling home runs in the third and seventh innings and producing his third RBI of the game with a single in the eighth. Don Baylor batted in two for the Angels with a homer and single.
Brewers 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
After Gorman Thomas, Robin Yount and Buck Martinez hit homers to account for the Brewers' first three runs, Sixto Lezcano drove in two tallies with a double in the eighth inning to beat the Royals, 5-4. Yount's homer in the fifth came on an inside-the-park drive and one out later Martinez connected for his first homer and first RBI of the season. With the score tied, 3-3, Sal Bando and Dick Davis singled in the Brewers' eighth and Ben Oglivie was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Lezcano rapped his decisive double. The Royals' only counter-thrust was a homer by Amos Otis.
Red Sox 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
The Red Sox were held to only four hits by Jerry Koosman, but they included a single and homer by Butch Hobson, who drove in three runs to beat the Twins, 5-2. The Red Sox got to Koosman for four runs in the first inning on a pair of passes, a double by Fred Lynn, another walk and singles by Hobson and Dwight Evans. Koosman then did not allow another hit until Hobson homered in the ninth.
Yankees 4, White Sox 0 at New York (night game):
Breaking a personal two-game losing streak, Ron Guidry allowed only two hits and posted his first shutout of the season, pitching the Yankees to a 4-0 victory over the White Sox. The Yankees scored their initial run in the fourth inning on a triple by Mickey Rivers and an infield out by Willie Randolph. Lou Piniella then clinched the verdict in Guidry's duel with Francisco Barrios by hitting a three-run homer in the seventh.
A's 3, Tigers 2 at Oakland (night game):
The A's rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and snapped the Tigers' six-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory. The A's were held to only three hits in the first eight frames, but put together a single by Dave Revering and double by Mario Guerrero for a run in the fourth to tie the score at 1-1. Jason Thompson homered in the seventh to put the Tigers ahead again. In the A's ninth, Larry Murray doubled, leading to the departure of Jack Billingham. After John Hiller relieved, Dwayne Murphy walked and Mitchell Page beat out a bunt to load the bases. Jim Essian then grounded into a double play as Murray scored the tying run. Hiller passed Revering to reload the bases before yielding the mound to Fernando Arroyo, who was tagged for the game-winning single by Guerrero.
Mariners 7, Blue Jays 2 at Seattle (night game):
A four-run start in the first inning sent the Mariners on their way to a 7-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Julio Cruz walked to open the M's getaway and Ruppert Jones followed with a homer. Bruce Bochte singled and stopped at third on a double by Willie Horton, who was tagged out when he overslid second. However, Dan Meyer came through with a double, driving in Bochte, and Bob Stinson singled to score Meyer with the fourth run of the frame.
Rangers 4, Orioles 2 at Texas (night game):
Jim Kern, who had a 7-0 record as the Rangers' relief ace, gained credit for his eighth save in a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. The Rangers took advantage of an error by Rich Dauer and scored two unearned runs in the second inning. Bump Wills drove them in with a single. After the Orioles picked up a counter in the fourth, the Rangers came back with a pair in their half on a homer by Richie Zisk, two walks and a double by Buddy Bell. Kern relieved Steve Comer and put down an Oriole threat in the eighth.
Mets 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
An infield hit by Frank Taveras in the 11th inning scored Doug Flynn and brought the Mets a 5-4 victory over the Braves. Flynn led off with a single and advanced to second on an infield out by Ron Hodges. Joel Youngblood, who had homered earlier in the game, singled to left, Flynn stopping at third. Taveras then beat out a slow roller to shortstop Pepe Frias as Flynn scored. Ed Glynn, who reported earlier in the day from Tidewater (International), gave up two walks in the Braves' half, one of them intentional, but retired the side to receive credit for the save.
Cubs 8, Giants 2 at Chicago (day game):
In a big day at bat, Dave Kingman drove in six runs to power the Cubs to an 8-2 victory over the Giants, who dropped their seventh straight game. Kingman doubled and scored on two infield outs in the second inning, homered with two men on base in the third, batted in another run with a grounder in the fifth and smashed his second homer of the game with a mate aboard in the seventh.
Reds 4, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pete Rose made his first appearance in Cincinnati since signing with Philadelphia and went hitless in four trips as the Reds defeated the Phillies, 4-2, by scoring two unearned runs in the eighth inning. The Phillies, who had been shut out in three straight games at Montreal, broke their zero string in the seventh when Del Unser and Garry Maddox hit consecutive homers to tie the score at 2-2. Johnny Bench led off the Reds' eighth with a double and Ray Knight walked. Steve Carlton then retired the next two batters before passing Joe Morgan to load the bases. Ken Griffey followed with a grounder to Rudy Meoli and when the second baseman booted the ball, both Bench and Knight scored to hand the Reds their victory before a near-sellout crowd of 48,968 fans who turned out for Rose's "homecoming."
Astros 3, Expos 2 at Houston (night game):
The Expos, who arrived in Houston after three straight shutout victories over the Phillies, were stopped on their scoreless pitching streak and lost to the Astros, 3-2. Ross Grimsley, who started for the Expos, was tagged for two runs in the second inning on singles by Terry Puhl, Craig Reynolds and Cesar Cedeno and an infield out by Jose Cruz. Puhl then homered in the third to produce what proved to be the Astros' winning run. Tony Solaita batted in the Expos' tallies against J.R. Richard, scoring Warren Cromartie both times.
Pirates 9, Padres 8 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Capping a four-run rally in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Lee Lacy drew a pass with the bases loaded to enable the Pirates to defeat the Padres, 9-8, for their sixth straight victory. Dave Winfield hit two homers for the Padres, who took an 8-5 lead with two runs in the ninth. In the Pirates' half, Omar Moreno and Tim Foli singled with one out and Dave Parker lashed into a pitch by John D'Acquisto for a score-tying homer. After the second out, Bob Shirley came in for the Padres to face Willie Stargell, who rapped a single. Rollie Fingers then relieved and gave up a double by Phil Garner. After an intentional pass to Ed Ott, Lacy batted for Dale Berra and drew the walk that gave the victory to the Pirates and ended the Padres' five-game winning streak.
Cardinals 8, Dodgers 7 at St. Louis (night game):
A pinch-single by Dane Iorg with two out in the 11th inning climaxed a two-run rally by the Cardinals and defeated the Dodgers, 8-7. The Cardinals had two-run homers by Keith Hernandez and Ted Simmons in the early going, while Dave Lopes rapped a pair of solo swats for the Dodgers and Reggie Smith connected for the circuit with a man on base. The Dodgers tied the score at 6-6 in the ninth when Lopes walked with the bases loaded and went ahead in the 11th on a pass to Lopes and a double by Bill Russell. In the Cards' half, after Hernandez and Simmons singled, Tony Scott smashed a drive off the wall, scoring Hernandez. Scott thought the ball had gone over the fence and was tagged out trotting into second. The Dodgers then passed Ken Reitz intentionally in a move that backfired when Iorg singled as a pinch-hitter for Mike Tyson.
