Twins 3, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Roy Smalley, the A.L's leading hitter, rapped two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Twins to a 3-1 victory over the Orioles. The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a walk to John Castino, a sacrifice bunt and singles by Hosken Powell, Butch Wynegar and Smalley. The third run came in the eighth on a double by Powell, sacrifice bunt by Wynegar and sacrifice fly by Smalley.

Red Sox 9, Rangers 3 at Boston (night game):
Homers by Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice powered the Red Sox to a 9-3 victory over the Rangers. After Lynn hit his homer with a man on base in the first inning, the Red Sox added a run when Carlton Fisk tripled and Yastrzemski singled. Yastrzemski belted a two-run homer in the third and Rice clouted a solo blast in the eighth.

Angels 3, Blue Jays 0 at California (night game):
A four-hitter by Frank Tanana, who pitched his first complete game this season, enabled the Angels to beat the Blue Jays, 3-0. The first run resulted from a two-base throwing error by Blue Jay pitcher Tom Underwood in the first inning. Bobby Grich hit a homer in the sixth and Don Baylor drove in his 56th run of the season with a round-tripper in the eighth.

Brewers 5, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Four singles in the fifth inning produced two runs and lifted the Brewers to a 5-3 victory over the White Sox. Paul Molitor, Jim Gantner, Cecil Cooper and Sixto Lezcano rapped hits that broke a 2-2 tie. The Brewers picked up an insurance tally in the eighth on a single by Charlie Moore.

Royals 3, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Going the distance for the first time this season, Larry Gura fired a three-hitter as the Royals upended the Yankees, 3-1. Amos Otis drew a two-out walk in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Darrell Porter. Pete LaCock and Hal McRae opened the second with singles. Freddie Patek laid down a bunt single and when pitcher Luis Tiant threw wildly to first, LaCock scored and McRae reached third. A sacrifice fly by U.L. Washington then plated McRae.

Indians 12, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Ted Cox and Andre Thornton each hit three-run homers and Paul Dade added a solo blast to pace the Indians in a 12-3 rout of the A's. The Indians picked up five runs in the second inning, with Cox and Dade hitting homers. They added two more in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Thornton's blow climaxed the scoring. Rick Waits recorded his sixth straight victory and eighth of the season.

Tigers 3, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
The Tigers garnered a 3-1 decision over the Mariners as Jack Billingham and John Hiller combined on a four-hitter. The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning when Mark Wagner singled and Alan Trammell doubled. Jerry Morales provided insurance with a homer in the ninth.

Braves 4, Expos 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Bob Horner drilled a three-run homer to lift the Braves to a 4-1 victory over the Expos. The game was scoreless in the sixth inning when Jerry Royster singled and stole second. Gary Matthews drew a walk and Horner followed with his circuit clout. The Braves added another tally in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Charlie Spikes.

Padres 11, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Scoring early and often, the Padres routed the Cubs, 11-3, behind the six-hit pitching of Eric Rasmussen. The Padres tallied three times in the first inning. Ozzie Smith reached first on an error by Cub shortstop Ivan DeJesus and scored on a triple by Dave Winfield. A single by Jerry Turner plated Winfield and a double by Gene Tenace and an intentional walk to Dan Briggs loaded the bases before Turner scored on a groundout by Barry Evans. The Padres picked up four more markers in the third frame, the runs coming in on a grounder by Briggs, single by Evans, double by Bill Almon and Cub second baseman Ted Sizemore's error on a pop fly.

Reds 6, Mets 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds defeated Mets, 6-1, behind the combined six-hit pitching of Fred Norman and Pedro Borbon. George Foster and Dan Driessen drove in runs with singles in the first inning and the Reds boosted their margin to 3-0 in the third with a homer by Driessen. Dave Concepcion clouted a three-run round-tripper in the fourth following a single by Ken Griffey and walk to Junior Kennedy.

Phillies 8, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Steve Carlton, allowing only a seventh-inning single by Jeff Leonard, notched the fourth one-hitter of his career as the Phillies whipped the Astros, 8-0. The Phils scored five times in the fourth inning when they lashed out seven hits. Tim McCarver and Carlton each drove in two runs. Mike Schmidt blasted a homer in the fifth.

Pirates 3, Dodgers 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-run homer by Dave Parker triggered the Pirates to a 3-1 triumph over the Dodgers. Parker's blast came in the first inning and followed a one-out single by Tim Foli. The Pirates scored another run in the eighth on an error by shortstop Bill Russell and singles by Ed Ott and Rennie Stennett.

Cardinals 5, Giants 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The winning run scored on a passed ball as the Cardinals edged the Giants, 5-4, for their sixth straight victory. Jerry Mumphrey opened the Redbird ninth with a triple. After Keith Hernandez and Ted Simmons were walked intentionally, Giants' catcher Mike Sadek failed to hold a pitch by Randy Moffitt and Mumphrey raced across the plate.
