Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Royals 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Starting in place of Jim Palmer, who was scratched because of a sore right elbow, Sammy Stewart pitched a two-hitter as the Orioles defeated the Royals, 3-1. Al Cowens got both of the Royals' hits, including a homer in the fifth inning. The Orioles tied the score in their half on a walk to Gary Roenicke, single by Eddie Murray and sacrifice fly by Doug DeCinces. Royals' starter Steve Busby departed in the sixth inning and the Orioles took advantage of reliever Renie Martin's wildness to score two runs in the eighth. After two walks, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional pass loaded the bases, Roenicke came up next and lashed the winning single.
Red Sox 9, White Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Led by Jim Rice, who rapped two homers and a single, the Red Sox piled up 17 hits to equal their season's high and defeated the White Sox, 9-2. Dwight Evans contributed four consecutive singles.
Rangers 7, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
In a one-man batting show, John Ellis drove in six runs with two homers and a double to power the Rangers to a 7-1 victory over the Brewers behind the two-hit pitching of Fergie Jenkins. Ellis homered in the first inning following a single by Al Oliver and hit for the circuit again in the sixth after another single by Oliver, who gave way to pinch-runner Billy Sample. Ellis then added two more RBIs with his double in the eighth. Jenkins yielded a first-inning single by Cecil Cooper and did not give up the Brewers' second hit until Jim Gantner tripled in the seventh and scored on an infield out by Cooper. Johnny Grubb singled for the Rangers in the ninth to extend his batting streak to 20 games.
Twins 4, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Mike Marshall retired the last four batters and picked up his 13th save of the season for the Twins, who defeated the Yankees, 4-1. Geoff Zahn, who started for the Twins, allowed only three hits, including a homer by Chris Chambliss for the Yankees' run, before being lifted after 5 1/3 innings. Mike Bacsik relieved and ran into trouble with two out in the eighth when Lou Piniella and Graig Nettles singled. Marshall took over, retired Cliff Johnson on a fly to left and set the Yankees down in order in the ninth.
Cubs 4, Padres 3 at Chicago (day game):
A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Mike Vail in the eighth inning gave the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Padres. Fernando Gonzalez and Dave Winfield homered for the Padres. With the score tied in the eighth, Barry Foote hit his second double of the game for the Cubs. Sam Mejias ran for Foote and advanced to third on a bunt by Steve Dillard before Vail batted for Ivan DeJesus and drilled a deep fly to center field. Lynn McGlothen was the winner in relief of Ken Holtzman. Bruce Sutter pitched the ninth inning and gained credit for his 12th save.
Giants 12, Cardinals 10 at St. Louis (night game):
A homer by Mike Ivie with two men on base climaxed a five-run rally in the ninth inning and carried the Giants to a 12-10 victory over the Cardinals, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Keith Hernandez belted a three-run homer for the Cardinals during a six-run outburst in the first inning. Willie McCovey hit the 511th homer of his career for the Giants in the third, tying him with Mel Ott for 11th place on the major leagues' all-time list, after driving in his 1,500th run with a single in the first. Terry Whitfield also homered for the Giants in the third. Trailing, 9-7, the Giants began their ninth-inning rally with singles by Larry Herndon and Darrell Evans. After a pass to Bill Madlock, two tying runs scored on successive forceouts at second. John Tamargo then walked and Ivie followed with his winning homer.
