Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Rangers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
After failing to win in five straight starts, Mike Flanagan gained his first victory for the Orioles since May 12, shutting out the Rangers on four hits, 3-0. The Orioles went hitless through the first four innings before reaching Doyle Alexander for all their runs in the fifth. Gary Roenicke led off with a single, Eddie Murray walked and Rich Dauer singled for the first tally. Alexander then passed both Kiko Garcia and Dave Skaggs to force in a second run before Al Bumbry added the final counter with a sacrifice fly.

Red Sox 2, Twins 1 at Boston (night game):
With two out in the eighth inning, Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk rapped consecutive singles to produce the run that gave the Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Twins. The Red Sox scored their initial run in the fifth when Yastrzemski doubled aand Butch Hobson singled. Yaz' two-bagger represented his 996th career extra-base hit, putting him 15th on the major leagues' all-time list ahead of Al Simmons. The Twins tied the score in the eighth with a single by Butch Wynegar, a passed ball and a single by Ken Landreaux that scored pinch-runner Dave Edwards. Bob Stanley then relieved Steve Renko on the mound for the Red Sox and gained credit for the victory, retiring the Twins' last four batters on only 12 pitches.

Angels 6, Tigers 4 at California (night game):
Hitting the first grand-slam homer of his major league career, Dan Ford powered the Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Tigers. With the Angels leading, 2-1, Bobby Grich was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning and stopped at second on a single by Willie Davis, who had four hits in the game. Following a sacrifice bunt by Bert Campaneris, the Tigers walked Carney Lansford intentionally in a move that backfired. John Hiller replaced Milt Wilcox on the mound for the Tigers and Ford greeted the reliever with his jackpot wallop. The Tigers came back with three runs in the ninth before the rally ended.

Yankees 11, Royals 10 at Kansas City (night game):
A free-swinging game that produced a total of 32 hits saw the Yankees come out winners when Graig Nettles homered with one out in the 10th inning to beat the Royals, 11-10. The Yankees batted their way to a 10-5 lead, scoring six runs in the seventh inning. Rookie pinch-hitter Darryl Jones drove in two runs with a single and Mickey Rivers added a pair with a triple. The Royals came back with two runs in their half of the seventh and tied the score in the ninth. Steve Braun started the rally with a single and Amos Otis homered. George Brett, who had four hits, singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Darrell Porter, moved to third on a wild pitch by Ken Clay and scored the tying tally when Willie Randolph threw wildly after fielding a grounder by Pete LaCock.

Blue Jays 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Homers by Rick Bosetti and John Mayberry carried the Blue Jays to a 2-1 victory over the A's, who went down to their sixth straight defeat. The A's scored their run in the first inning on a double by Larry Murray and single by Jeff Newman. Bosetti tied the score with a homer in the second and Mayberry won the game with his smash in the ninth.

Mariners 6, Indians 2 at Seattle (night game):
Driving in three runs, John Hale paced the Mariners to a 6-2 victory over the Indians. Mike Parrott gave up the Indians' runs in the first inning, one scoring on a balk. After Leon Roberts doubled and Hale singled to recoup one run in the second inning, Larry Cox singled and Hale homered to put the Mariners ahead in the fourth. A single by Bruce Bochte and doubles by Willie Horton and Roberts added a pair in the fifth before Ruppert Jones homered for the M's final tally in the sixth.

Dodgers 11, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes and Ron Cey homered as the Dodgers gained an 11-4 victory in a game that was cut short by rain with the Cubs coming to bat in the seventh inning. Cey hit his homer with a man on base in the first and drove in another run with a single in the fifth. Dusty Baker also accounted for three RBIs with a pair of singles.

Reds 3, Expos 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Undefeated Mike LaCoss gained his seventh straight victory as the Reds beat the Expos, 3-2. The start was the 12th of the season for LaCoss and the Reds have been victorious in each game. Dan Driessen drove in the Reds' first run with an infield out after singles by Junior Kennedy and Dave Concepcion in the fourth inning. Larry Parrish homered for the Expos in the sixth, but Driessen put the Reds ahead again with a round-tripper in the seventh. The Reds then added what proved to be the winning run in the eighth. Ken Griffey walked and was forced by Kennedy, who came around to score on singles by Concepcion and George Foster. An error by Kennedy led to an unearned run for the Expos in the ninth.

Astros 5, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Shutting out the Mets, 5-0, Joe Niekro posted his eighth straight victory to tie the Astros' club record set by the late Don Wilson in 1969. Niekro allowed only four hits in racking up his fourth shutout of the season. The Astros scored a run in the second inning when Enos Cabell singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Jeff Leonard. Their other counters came without the benefit of a hit after two walks, a wild pitch and an intentional pass loaded the bases in the sixth. Pat Zachry then walked Alan Ashby to force in one run, Mike Scott relieved and passed Niekro to admit another tally and two more runs followed on an infield out by Terry Puhl and a balk by Scott.

Braves 11, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Braves failed to hold a four-run lead in the ninth inning but then exploded for six runs in the 10th to defeat the Phillies, 11-5. The Phillies' tying tallies in the ninth were all unearned as the result of an error by Pepe Frias. Pete Rose, who moved from first base to third for the Phillies at the start of the 10th, threw wild on a grounder by Jeff Burroughs to open the inning. Joe Nolan was hit by a pitch. After Rowland Office grounded into a forceout at third, Mike Lum walked to load the bases. Biff Pocoroba then broke the tie with a double, driving in two runs. Following an intentional pass to Brian Asselstine, the Braves added three runs on singles by Jerry Royster and Gary Matthews before Bob Horner added the final tally with a sacrifice fly. Horner had four hits in the game, including a homer.

Pirates 3, Giants 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
After being held to three hits, Pittsburgh exploded for three runs on a pair of homers after two were out in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 3-2. John Curtis, pitching for the Giants, had a 2-0 lead before Omar Moreno ignited the Pirates' rally with a single. Willie Stargell then batted for Dale Berra and came through with a homer to tie the score. Dave Parker followed Stargell to the plate and also hit for the circuit to produce the winning run.

Padres 8, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
A wild pickoff throw by Darold Knowles for his second error in the 10th inning allowed Bill Almon to score from second base with the run that gave the Padres an 8-7 victory over the Cardinals. Dave Winfield tripled with the bases loaded and Dan Briggs homered to pace the Padres to a 7-4 lead. The Cardinals, who had a homer by Ken Reitz, rallied to tie the score in the ninth before Knowles threw the game away in the 10th. Barry Evans led off the inning with a single for the Padres and Almon was safe when Knowles mishandled his sacrifice bunt. Fernando Gonzalez forced Evans at third. Knowles then tried to pick off Gonzalez at first, but there was a mixup in signs and first baseman Keith Hernandez was not covering the bag. Knowles' throw went wild, enabling Almon to score on the error.
