Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, White Sox 7 at Chicago (night game):
After making up an early 5-0 deficit, the Orioles scored a run in the 10th inning to prevail over the White Sox, 8-7. The Orioles tied the score in the ninth with a homer by Rick Dempsey and won in the extra frame when Doug DeCinces drew a two-out walk and Billy Smith doubled.

Indians 6, A's 4 at Cleveland (night game):
After being held hitless for the first seven innings, the Indians exploded for six runs in the eighth to down the A's 6-4. Pinch-hitter Jim Norris triggered the uprising with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Ron Hassey. After Paul Dade singled, Dave Heaverlo replaced A's starter Mike Norris and was greeted with a single by Toby Harrah. After a single by Bobby Bonds plated Dade, Bob Lacey relieved Heaverlo and Andre Thornton drilled a three-run homer. A triple by Dave Rosello knocked in the final run.

Tigers 7, Mariners 3 at Detroit (night game):
Posting their fourth straight victory and the second under interim pilot Dick Tracewski, the Tigers defeated the Mariners, 7-3. A five-run fourth inning proved decisive. The outburst began with two walks and Phil Mankowski tied the score at 2-2 with a one-out single. After Mark Wagner walked to load the bases, Ron LeFlore unloaded a three-run triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alan Trammell.

Red Sox 11, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Gary Allenson clouted the first grand slam of his major league career, Larry Wolfe hit two homers and Dwight Evans added one to pace the Red Sox in an 11-3 thrashing of the Royals. Wolfe's first round-tripper came in the third inning. Jim Rice added a two-run single in the third. Evans and Wolfe connected for consecutive homers in the fourth. Allenson's bases-loaded shot climaxed a five-run ninth.

Twins 8, Yankees 7 at Minnesota (night game):
A two-run homer by rookie Dave Edwards with two out in the seventh inning lifted the Twins to an 8-7 triumph over the Yankees. Ron Jackson began the Twins' seventh with a single. Two outs later, Edwards slugged his round-tripper to break a 6-6 tie. The victory was credited to Pete Redfern, who hurled three innings of shutout relief. Mike Marshall picked up his 14th save in his 36th appearance despite yielding an eighth-inning run.

Brewers 5, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Snapping their four-game losing streak, the Brewers edged the Rangers, 5-4. The score was 3-3 going into the eighth when Sal Bando snapped the tie with a leadoff homer. The Brewers added an insurance run on a double by Gorman Thomas and a single by Sixto Lezcano. Moose Haas went 8 1/3 innings before giving way to Jerry Augustine, who in turn was replaced by Reggie Cleveland, who got the final out.

[DH] Blue Jays 9, Angels 8 (night game) / Angels 10, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
After blowing a big lead, the Blue Jays came back to win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-8, but the Angels captured the second game, 10-2. In the lidlifter, an eighth-inning double by Rick Cerone scored Al Woods from second with the winning run to snap an 8-8 tie. Woods had reached first on a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Angels manufactured a tie with a seventh-inning, seven-run rally, capped by a three-run homer by Brian Downing. In the nightcap, the Angels erupted for six runs in the third inning when Brian Downing hit a two-run single and Willie Aikens clouted his first career grand slam.

Dodgers 9, Cardinals 8 at Los Angeles (night game):
After building a 9-1 lead, the Dodgers barely staved off a ninth-inning Cardinal uprising to come away with a 9-8 victory. Davey Lopes extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a leadoff homer in the first inning and also had a two-run single in the second frame. Winning pitcher Rick Sutcliffe helped his own cause with a two-run single in the third and Ron Cey led off the fourth with a round-tripper. The Cards rallied for seven runs in the ninth, the big blow being a grand-slam homer by Tony Scott. The Redbirds had two men on when reliever Terry Forster struck out Lou Brock for the game's final out.

Expos 4, Braves 1 at Montreal (night game):
Helped by errors, the Expos posted a 4-1 victory over the Braves. Warren Cromartie walked to start the Expos' fourth inning and Rodney Scott followed with a bunt down the third base line that Bob Horner threw wildly past first, allowing Cromartie to score. When Jerry Royster made a bad throw to the plate on same play, Scott came around to tally the Expos' second run. Larry Parrish stroked a run-scoring single in the fifth and Gary Carter drove in another run with a single in the eighth.

Reds 4, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Although forced to leave the game because of stiffness in his right elbow, unbeaten Mike LaCoss pitched five innings and got credit for his eighth victory as the Reds topped the Mets, 4-1. The Reds broke a 1-1 tie with singles by Dave Collins, Dave Concepcion and George Foster in the fifth inning. They added a pair of markers in the sixth on a single by Cesar Geronimo, walk to Rick Auerbach, sacrifice by Vic Correll and single by Junior Kennedy.

Astros 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Posting a league-high 10th victory and his ninth win in a row, Joe Niekro scattered nine hits in hurling the Astros to a 4-3 triumph over the Phillies. Cesar Cedeno drove in three runs, stroking singles in the first and third innings to score Terry Puhl, who singled and stole second on both occasions. Art Howe belted a homer in the fourth and later in the same frame, Alan Ashby doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Cedeno.

Padres 3, Pirates 2 at San Diego (night game):
Fernando Gonzalez banged out four hits, including a two-run homer, to spark the Padres to a 3-2 triumph over the Pirates. Gonzalez' homer in the fourth inning came after a single by Jerry Turner and broke a 1-1 tie.

Cubs 3, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Cubs pushed across a run in the 10th inning to edge the Giants, 3-2. Bill Buckner started the winning rally with a single and, after Dave Kingman fouled out, went to third on a double by Bobby Murcer. Jerry Martin received an intentional walk, but Steve Dillard spoiled the strategy by hitting a dribbler down the third base line which Darrell Evans was unable to field in time for a play at the plate. Bruce Sutter pitched hitless ball over the last two innings to gain his second victory of the season.
