Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 2, A's 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A two-run triple by Jim Norris in the ninth inning enabled the Indians to overhaul the Athletics, 2-1. Dave Rosello grounded into a forceout after Ron Pruitt drew a walk off losing reliever Jim Todd, and pinch-hitter Ted Cox reached base safely on Rob Picciolo's error before Norris greeted reliever Craig Minetto with his three-bagger.
Mariners 3, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Mariners spoiled Sparky Anderson's debut as Detroit manager by scoring an unearned run in the ninth to defeat the Tigers, 3-2. Leon Roberts tripled off reliever John Hiller with two out in the ninth. Aurelio Rodriguez then booted Larry Milbourne's grounder as Roberts scored the winning run.
Twins 4, Yankees 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A wind-blown double by Butch Wynegar with the bases full in the fourth inning scored three runs and carried the Twins to a 4-2 triumph over the Yankees. The Twins filled the bases when Roy Smalley and Ron Jackson singled and Ken Landreaux drew life on an error by Chris Chambliss. Mike Marshall, working in relief of winning pitcher Geoff Zahn, earned his 15th save in 37 appearances.
Brewers 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
A two-run double by Buck Martinez in the fourth inning proved decisive as the Brewers downed the Rangers, 6-2. The key blow followed singles by Sixto Lezcano and Jim Wohlford and extended the Brewers' lead to 4-0.
Angels 10, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
Willie Aikens' second grand-slam home run in two games, a first-inning clout off Phil Huffman, sent the Angels on their way to a 10-2 triumph over the Blue Jays. Carney Lansford walked, Dan Ford singled and Don Baylor walked to set the stage for Aikens, who homered with the bases full in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader the previous day. The feat of grand slams in two successive games equaled the major league record shared by eight other players.
Expos 4, Braves 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos pushed over three runs in the eighth inning on a run-scoring single by Tony Perez and a two-run double by Gary Carter to edge the Braves, 4-3. With the Expos trailing, 3-1, in the eighth, Rodney Scott singled and Andre Dawson doubled. Gene Garber relieved Eddie Solomon and was greeted by Perez' single, scoring Scott. Carter then doubled to the fence, scoring Dawson and Perez.
Padres 2, Pirates 1 at San Diego (night game):
Pinch-hitter Barry Evans singled in the 14th inning, scoring Ozzie Smith from second with the run that gave the Padres a 2-1 decision over the Pirates and a sweep of the three-game series. Smith, facing reliever John Candelaria with two out, reached first when Tim Foli booted his grounder. Dave Winfield walked before Evans broke up the game.
Cubs 8, Giants 6 at San Francisco (night game):
The Cubs rallied in the ninth to beat the Giants, 8-6, on a two-run single by Mick Kelleher, his third hit of the game. Willie McCovey belted his 513th career homer in the fourth, moving past Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks to ninth place on the all-time list.
