White Sox 8, Red Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
Usually used as a defensive replacement, Mike Squires started at first base and drove in four runs to pace the White Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Red Sox. Squires batted in a run with a single in the first inning, accounted for two with a double in the second, when the White Sox scored five times, and added his fourth RBI with a squeeze bunt in the seventh. Jim Rice and Carlton Fisk homered for the Red Sox. Bob Watson, obtained from the Astros, made his debut in a Boston uniform and rapped a single and double for his first A.L. hits. The Greek Night game attracted 46,556, the largest White Sox crowd since opening day.

Indians 13, Mariners 3 at Cleveland (night game):
With a crowd of 32,627 on hand, the Indians exploded for 19 hits and won their fourth straight game, defeating the Mariners, 13-3. After counting once in the first inning, the Indians erupted for seven runs in the second, two scoring on a double by Toby Harrah and two on a single by Ron Pruitt. Bobby Bonds added a homer in the third. Ruppert Jones homered for the Mariners and Tom Paciorek added their two other runs with a single and double.

Angels 8, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
A homer by Dan Ford in the ninth inning gave the Angels an 8-7 victory over the Tigers, who suffered their second straight defeat by one run under Sparky Anderson as their new manager. In addition to Ford's winning blast, the Angels had three other homers -- two by Bobby Grich, who drove in three runs, and one by Carney Lansford. Jason Thompson and Champ Summers rapped round-trippers for the Tigers.

Royals 14, Brewers 11 at Milwaukee (night game):
Capping a game that produced a total of 35 hits, the Royals erupted for eight runs in the ninth inning, including three on an inside-the-park homer by Willie Wilson, to defeat the Brewers, 14-11. Wilson also had another homer in the game, plus two singles, and drove in a total of six runs. Dick Davis belted the first grand-slam of his major league career, Sal Bando homered with two men on base, Charlie Moore connected with one aboard and Paul Molitor singled in each of the first four innings as the Brewers slugged their way to an 11-2 lead. Their attack then stalled while the Royals battled back to gain their victory. In the ninth-inning rally, the Royals bunched seven singles, one double and a sacrifice fly, in addition to Wilson's third inside-the-park homer of the season.

Orioles 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Al Bumbry belted a two-run triple off Mike Marshall with two out in the ninth inning to bring the Orioles a 6-5 victory over the Twins. Doug DeCinces and Terry Crowley walked before Bumbry tripled for the only hit allowed by Marshall in two innings of work. In the early going, John Lowenstein and DeCinces homered for the Orioles. Ken Landreaux batted in two runs for the Twins with a homer and sacrifice fly. Hosken Powell also produced two runs with a single.

Rangers 9, Yankees 5 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers sent 12 men to bat and scored eight runs in the fifth inning for their most productive stanza of the season to defeat the Yankees, 9-5. Johnny Grubb batted in two runs with a bases-loaded single to ignite the outburst. A squeeze bunt by Billy Sample and a wild throw on the play by Ed Figueroa added two more. Al Oliver accounted for another pair with a homer. The Rangers loaded the bases again after Jim Kaat replaced Figueroa and scored the last two tallies of the inning on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jim Sundberg.

Blue Jays 6, A's 0 at Toronto (night game):
Ending a personal 13-game losing streak, Tom Underwood pitched the Blue Jays to a 6-0 victory over the A's. The lefthander's last victory was against the Orioles August 8, 1978. Rico Carty provided principal support for Underwood, driving in one run and scoring two.

Pirates 6, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Scoring five runs in the ninth inning, the Pirates were able to defeat the Dodgers, 6-2. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a wild pitch by Don Sutton and maintained that slim edge until the ninth when they broke loose against Dodger relievers Ken Brett and Dave Patterson. Omar Moreno and Dave Parker each hit a two-run single. The Dodgers then counted their pair too little and too late when Gary Thomasson walked and Joe Ferguson homered.

Astros 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Joaquin Andujar turned in his sixth victory of the season, pitching a five-hitter, and Art Howe drove in a run with a double in the ninth inning as the Astros defeated the Expos, 2-1. Gary Carter tripled and Ellis Valentine hit a sacrifice fly for the Expos' run in the second inning. The Astros tied the score in the fourth when Cesar Cedeno singled. stole second for one of his three thefts in the game, and counted on a single by Denny Walling. In the ninth, Walling walked and tallied the winning run on Howe's two-bagger.

Mets 2, Braves 1 at New York (night game):
Pitching a two-hitter, Craig Swan was rewarded with a victory when Frank Taveras tripled in the eighth inning and Lee Mazzilli singled to beat the Braves, 2-1. Mazzilli also drove in the Mets' initial run with a single in the first. Jeff Burroughs homered for the Braves' tally in the seventh. Swan, who almost was hit by a pitch while trying to bunt in the fifth inning, whacked Phil Niekro in the head with a delivery when the Braves' starter came to bat in the sixth. Niekro was forced to leave the game for a pinch-runner.

Reds 6, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Marking the second anniversary of his trade to the Reds by the Mets, Tom Seaver pitched a six-hitter and also batted in two runs with a double in a 6-3 victory over the Phillies. Seaver had one shaky inning, giving up the Phils' runs in the second on two walks, a triple by Bake McBride and squeeze bunt by Bud Harrelson. Trailing, 3-1, the Reds rebounded in the third. George Foster singled, took third on a single by Dan Driessen and scored on an infield out by Ray Knight. After an intentional pass to Cesar Geronimo, Seaver foiled the strategy with his double that put the Reds ahead to stay. Johnny Bench added a two-run homer in the fifth.

Cubs 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
A two-run rally in the ninth inning enabled the Cubs to defeat the Padres, 3-2. Dan Briggs homered with a man on base for the Padres' tallies in the fourth inning. Dave Kingman came back with a solo swat for the Cubs in the seventh. In the ninth, Kingman singled and Sam Mejias ran for him. Mejias took third on a single by Jerry Martin and scored on a single by Steve Ontiveros. Barry Foote then singled to drive in Martin with the winning run.

Giants 9, Cardinals 6 at San Francisco (night game):
Willie McCovey hit his second homer of the game and 515th of his career, connecting with two men on base and two out in the 13th inning to power the Giants to a 9-6 victory over the Cardinals. McCovey's first homer came in the fourth inning.
