Burleson got an inside-the-park homer in the third inning when Claudell Washington failed to make a diving catch of his line drive to right field. Yastrzemski hit his milestone double in the fifth. Rice's homer followed a single by Burleson in the sixth. Jorge Orta and Rusty Torres hit two-run homers for the White Sox.
Indians 4, Mariners 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Pinch-hitter Ted Cox singled in the ninth inning, scoring Toby Harrah, to give the Indians a 4-3 victory over the Mariners. Harrah reached base with a single, moved to second when Bobby Bonds walked and took third after a deep fly to right field by Rick Manning before Cox singled to decide the game. The Indians, who won their fifth straight, drew another fine crowd, 22,835.
Angels 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Joe Rudi, who had not played since June 3, came up as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and delivered a single for the Angels' deciding run in a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. Brian Downing batted in the Angels' first two tallies with a bases-loaded single in the third, but Jason Thompson hit two homers for the Tigers to tie score. In the Angels' eighth, Willie Aikens singled and Downing walked before Tiger starter Jack Morris was lifted in favor of John Hiller. Rudi batted for Larry Harlow and rapped Hiller's first pitch for his single to snap the tie. After a passed ball and a walk to Bobby Grich, Tom Donohue singled to give the Angels an insurance run.
Brewers 3, Royals 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewer staff's league-leading total of complete games amounted to 31 when Jim Slaton hurled the route for the fifth time this season and edged the Royals, 3-2. Steve Busby, who had beaten the Brewers seven straight times in his career, was stopped on that streak when Ben Oglivie singled in the eighth inning, Sixto Lezcano sacrificed and Robin Yount singled for the Brewers' winning run.
Yankees 3, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
An outstanding relief performance by rookie Ron Davis, who gained his fifth straight victory, enabled the Yankees to defeat the Rangers, 3-2, before 41,097 fans, the largest crowd in veight-year history of the Texas club. The Yankees scored their first two runs on homers by Bucky Dent and Juan Beniquez, while the Rangers counted on a round-tripper by Pat Putnam and on a single by Nelson Norman and triple by Billy Sample. Davis replaced Luis Tiant with two men on base and none out in the ninth. Richie Zisk grounded out and, after Davis walked Jim Sundberg to load the bases, pinch-hitter John Ellis hit into a double play. Sparky Lyle, pitching in relief against his former teammates, was the loser on the only hit he allowed in three innings of work. Dent singled off Lyle in the 10th and Mickey Rivers sacrificed. Jim Kern then replaced Lyle and was tagged for a run-scoring single by Willie Randolph.
Blue Jays 3, A's 2 at Toronto (night game):
A candidate for Comeback Player of the Year, Dave Lemanczyk brought his record to 7-3 by pitching the Blue Jays to a 3-2 victory over the A's. Last season, Lemanczyk won only four games while losing 14. Rico Carty singled in the second inning, stole second and scored the Blue Jays' first run on a single by Bob Bailor. In the fifth, Danny Ainge doubled, Bob Davis was safe on a fielder's choice on a bunt and Alfredo Griffin singled to drive in Ainge. Davis, who stopped at second, moved to third on a bunt by Joe Cannon and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Rick Bosetti. Dwayne Murphy homered for the A's.
Pirates 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Omar Moreno homered with two men on base in the third inning to start the Pirates off to a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers. Moreno's wallop came after a single by Ed Ott and a pass to Rennie Stennett. Tim Foli and Dave Parker followed with singles. Foli was thrown out at the plate when Willie Stargell singled, but John Milner also singled to drive in the Pirates' fourth run of the frame. Don Robinson held the Dodgers to five hits, with their three runs coming on a circuit clout by Joe Ferguson in the fourth. The Pirates added an unearned run in the fifth and wrapped up the decision with a tally on a single by Phil Garner and double by Ott in the sixth.
Expos 4, Astros 2 at Montreal (night game):
Ellis Valentine hit a two-run homer and also scored another time to pace the Expos to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. J.R. Richard was the Astros' loser, although striking out 11. Gary Carter, who had four of the Expos' nine hits, singled ahead of Valentine's homer in the second inning. The Expos added a run in the third when Rodney Scott singled, stole second and scored on a single by Andre Dawson. Ross Grimsley and Elias Sosa gave up 10 hits between them to the Astros. Before departing, Grimsley batted in an insurance run with a single in the sixth inning, scoring Valentine.
Mets 2, Braves 0 at New York (night game):
Allowing only three hits, Kevin Kobel turned in his first complete game of the season and pitched the Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Braves. The Mets were held hitless by Mickey Mahler for the first 5 1/3 innings before Doug Flynn smashed a homer. Flynn also scored the Mets' other run off reliever Bo McLaughlin in the eighth, hitting a single, advancing on a sacrifice by Kobel and coming home on a single by Joel Youngblood.
Phillies 4, Reds 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pete Rose drew a walk with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, forcing in Manny Trillo, to give the Phillies a 4-3 victory over the Reds. Trillo, back in action for the first time since breaking his left forearm May 3, reached base with a double and pinch-hitter Greg Gross followed with a safe bunt. The Cubs wiped out their deficit in the third with three runs on passes to Ivan DeJesus and Mick Kelleher, a double by Kingman, infield out by Scot Thompson and single by Jerry Martin. Kingman hit his homer, No. 22 for the Cubs' slugger, in the seventh.
