White Sox 6, Red Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
A bases-loaded triple by Jorge Orta sent the White Sox on their way to a 6-1 victory over the Red Sox behind the six-hit pitching of Ken Kravec. In the third inning, Don Kessinger singled, Ralph Garr was safe on an error by Bob Watson and Greg Pryor beat out a bunt to pave the way for Orta's triple. Alan Bannister followed with a single for the fourth run of the frame, and Orta also doubled and scored on a single by Rusty Torres in the fifth. The Red Sox' lone run came in the third inning when Mike O'Berry hit his first major league homer.

Mariners 6, Indians 5 at Cleveland (day game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning, capped when Bruce Bochte homered with a man on base, gave the Mariners a 6-5 victory over the Indians, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. The Indians overcame a 3-0 deficit and went ahead when Bobby Bonds smashed his sixth career grand-slam homer in the eighth inning. Bobby Valentine doubled to ignite the Mariners' rally in the ninth and scored the tying run on a single by Larry Milbourne before Bochte hit his decisive homer. The Indians fell short with a circuit clout by Dave Rosello in their half of the ninth.

Tigers 8, Angels 4 at Detroit (day game):
After three defeats under Sparky Anderson, the Tigers gained the first victory for their new manager, breaking loose for four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Angels, 8-4. With two out, Ron LeFlore singled. Dave LaRoche relieved Don Aase and was greeted with a single by Rusty Staub. After Steve Kemp walked to load the sacks, Jason Thompson singled, driving in two runs to snap a 4-4 tie, and two more tallies followed on singles by Lance Parrish and Lynn Jones.

Brewers 5, Royals 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Two homers by Gorman Thomas, who drove in three runs, backed the pitching of Lary Sorensen as the Brewers defeated the Royals, 5-3. Sorensen turned in his 10th complete game of the season and 32nd to the credit of the Brewers' staff. After Thomas' first homer of the game with a man on base in the first inning, the Brewers added a run on a single by Robin Yount, a stolen base and a double by Buck Martinez in the second. An unearned run followed in the seventh before Thomas capped the Brewers' scoring with his second circuit clout in the eighth. Steve Braun and Darrell Porter hit homers for the Royals.

Orioles 8, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
Tim Stoddard pitched 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief after replacing Mike Flanagan to save the Orioles' 8-5 victory over the Twins. Jerry Koosman, who won his first seven A. L. decisions with the Twins, was tagged with his sixth straight loss. Kiko Garcia drove in three runs with a triple and double and Benny Ayala and Lee May hit solo homers in the Orioles' attack. Ron Jackson hit a two-run homer for the Twins.

Rangers 6, Yankees 3 at Texas (night game):
Buddy Bell hit homers his first two times at bat, driving in three runs, and Oscar Gamble added a two-run wallop to power the Rangers to a 6-3 victory over the Yankees. Steve Comer, who turned in his first complete game of the season, held the Yankees to seven hits, with two of their runs coming on a round-tripper by Thurman Munson in the first inning.

Blue Jays 10, A's 9 at Toronto (day game):
Atoning for an error, Alfredo Griffin singled with the bases loaded in vninth inning to drive in two runs and give the Blue Jays a 10-9 victory over the A's. A throwing error by Griffin had allowed the A's to go ahead in the top half of ninth, but the shortstop came through with his fourth hit of the game in the Blue Jays' half after Al Woods singled, Otto Velez was hit by a pitch and Luis Gomez singled to fill the sacks.

Pirates 5, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Ed Whitson and Kent Tekulve combined on a two-hitter and Tim Foli batted in three runs as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 5-1. Bill Russell homered for the Dodgers' run in the fourth inning and added a single for their other hit in the sixth. The Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Manny Sanguillen and Matt Alexander singled and Tim Foli drove them across with a double. Foil accounted for his third RBI of the game with a single in the ninth.

Expos 19, Astros 3 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos smashed five homers in a 24-hit attack and walloped the Astros, 19-3. Joe Niekro, who had won nine straight decisions for the Astros, was handed his first setback since April 29. Tony Perez started the Expos' slugging with a two-run homer in the first inning. Ellis Valentine smacked a two-run double in the third and Larry Parrish followed with a homer. The Expos turned on the full power in the fourth with consecutive circuit clouts by Perez, Gary Carter and Valentine. Tommy Hutton added a two-run triple in the seventh. The Expos' 19 runs equaled the club record.

Mets 2, Braves 1 at New York (day game):
The Braves and Mets played to a 1-1 tie in a game that was delayed twice by rain for a total of two hours and finally was suspended because of a prearranged time limit so the Mets could catch a flight to Houston for their next series. The contest was resumed August 27. The Mets scored their run in the fourth inning on singles by Lee Mazzilli and Richie Hebner and a safe two-out bunt by John Stearns. Gary Matthews homered for the Braves' tying run in the fifth.

Phillies 9, Reds 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
Sending 10 men to bat, the Phillies scored six runs in the eighth inning to gain a 9-3 victory over the Reds. Mike Schmidt drew a leadoff walk and, after a sacrifice, Bake McBride was passed intentionally. Schmidt and McBride each stole a base on successive pitches before Bob Boone drove them home with a double to break the 3-3 tie. Tim McCarver hit a pinch-single to plate Boone. After an intentional pass to Pete Rose, Larry Bowa singled, driving in McCarver. Garry Maddox doubled for two runs to cap the outburst.

Cubs 8, Padres 5 at San Diego (day game):
Exploding for six runs after two were out in the first inning, the Cubs built up an early lead and then added two runs on a single by Mick Kelleher in the eighth to defeat the Padres, 8-5. Bill Buckner ignited the Cubs' outburst with a double and Dave Kingman homered. A triple by Jerry Martin, infield hit by Mike Vail and double by Barry Foote kayoed Bob Owchinko. After Bob Shirley relieved, an intentional pass to Ted Sizemore loaded the bases. Mike Krukow helped himself to victory, driving in two runs with a double, and a third scored when Jerry Turner threw wild after retrieving the ball in left field.

Giants 7, Cardinals 4 at San Francisco (day game):
Willie McCovey turned from homer slugger to singles hitter against the Cardinals, driving in two runs and scoring one, to help the Giants gain a 7-4 victory. The Cardinals, who lost their fifth straight game, tied the score at 4-4 before the Giants broke away with three runs in the eighth inning. Johnnie LeMaster led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice by Marc Hill and counted on a pinch-single by Bill Madlock. The Giants went on to load the bases and McCovey singled, driving in two insurance runs.
