Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Tigers 8 at Boston (night game):
Strategy backfired on the Tigers in the eighth inning when the Red Sox erupted for three runs en route to a 9-8 triumph. With the Tigers leading, 7-6, Dwight Evans singled and reached second on a fielder's choice-sacrifice by Jerry Remy. Rick Burleson advanced both runners with a sacrifice and the Tigers gave Tom Poquette an intentional walk to face Jim Rice, who followed with a two-run single. What proved to be the winning run scored when Gary Allenson singled home Poquette.

Angels 5, Rangers 0 at California (night game):
Oscar Gamble singled with one out in the eighth, spoiling Nolan Ryan's bid for his fifth no-hitter, but the Angels went on to beat the Rangers, 5-0. Only four batters reached base against Ryan, who pitched the 15th two-hitter of his career and had 10 strikeouts. Two-run homers by Tom Donohue and Carney Lansford in the third inning gave Ryan an early cushion.

Mariners 5, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Mike Parrott spaced eight hits in pitching the Mariners to a 5-1 victory over the White Sox. With the score tied at 1-1 in the fifth, the Mariners mounted a two-run rally. Larry Milbourne singled and advanced to third on a double by Ruppert Jones. A single by Bruce Bochte scored Milbourne and Jones counted as Willie Horton grounded out.

Orioles 8, Indians 7 at Cleveland (night game):
The Orioles had to push across a run in the ninth to edge the Indians, 8-7, after blowing a comfortable 6-2 lead. Kiko Garcia walked to open the ninth against reliever Victor Cruz, took second on Ken Singleton's infield single, reached third as John Lowenstein flied out and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Gary Roenicke.

Royals 3, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Larry Gura and Al Hrabosky combined on a six-hitter as the Royals pushed over the deciding run in the ninth to defeat the Athletics, 3-2. Todd Cruz singled and scored the winning run on a double by George Brett. Mike Norris had the Royals blanked on five hits when Mike Edwards' error opened the gate to two runs in the eighth.

Braves 10, Phillies 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Gary Matthews belted homers his first two times at bat, in the first and third innings, before adding a double in the seventh, good for four RBIs as the Braves snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Phillies. The Braves took a 5-4 lead in the third on the second Matthews home run, a single by Jeff Burroughs and Joe Nolan's first homer of the season.

Astros 3, Mets 2 at Houston (night game):
Completing the longest contest this season, Craig Reynolds singled to drive in Julio Gonzalez with none out in the 18th inning for a 3-2 Astros' victory over the Mets. Pinch-hitter Reggie Baldwin, just called up from Charleston (International), opened the 18th with a single off loser Tom Hausman. Terry Puhl drew a pass and Gonzalez pinch-ran for Baldwin. After both runners advanced on a passed ball by Met catcher John Stearns, Reynolds delivered a hit down the right field line. Bert Roberge pitched the final three innings for his first big league victory.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
Dusty Baker slugged a pair of homers and Steve Garvey and Gary Thomasson also clouted round-trippers as the Dodgers halted their three-game losing streak with a 7-3 decision over the Cubs, who were stopped on a five-game winning skein. Baker drove in four runs with homers to help Burt Hooton to his third straight victory. Dave Kingman counted his 24th circuit clout.

Reds 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Getting his first victory in more than a month, Bill Bonham pitched the Reds to a 3-2 triumph over the Expos. Bonham also contributed with his bat, singling to start a two-run fifth inning. Ken Griffey, who had three hits, followed with a single and both runners advanced on a sacrifice. George Foster's infield single plated Bonham and Griffey came home on Dan Driessen's hit. In the eighth Johnny Bench singled and scored on Ray Knight's triple, staving off a ninth-inning homer by the Expos' Andre Dawson.

Padres 3, Cardinals 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Cardinals suffered their 13th straight setback at San Diego Stadium and sixth in row in their current slump as Randy Jones and Rollie Fingers combined to throttle the Redbirds, 3-2. The Padres broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth inning on an unearned run. After Jerry Turner singled, Gene Tenace flied out, but Cards' center fielder Tony Scott threw wildly to enable Turner to race to third. Jay Johnstone plated the tie-breaking run with a groundout. An error by Mike Tyson on a foul fly gave Tenace extra life in the sixth and the Padre catcher followed with a sacrifice fly for what proved to be the decisive run.
