Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, Tigers 5 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles captured their seventh straight victory and 13th in the last 14 games by downing the Tigers, 6-5, in dramatic fashion. Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, the Birds pulled to within a run on a homer by Ken Singleton, who had driven in a run with a single in the first and thrown out Ron LeFlore at the plate in the fifth. After a single by Eddie Murray, Doug DeCinces hit a two-out homer to left off Dave Tobik. Sammy Stewart and Tippy Martinez pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief of Mike Flanagan.

Red Sox 12, Blue Jays 1 at Boston (night game):
Newcomer Bob Watson smashed a three-run homer in the second inning, Fred Lynn homered with one aboard in the fourth, and Jim Rice homered twice in a game for the 18th time in his career as the Red Sox pummeled the Blue Jays, 12-1.

Royals 9, Angels 5 at California (night game):
Frank White and Pete LaCock knocked in seven runs to lead the Royals to a 9-5 triumph over the Angels in the teams' initial meeting of the season. A single by White tied the score in the fifth and his two-run homer in the sixth after a double by Darrell Porter and RBI single by LaCock made the score 4-1. LaCock singled home two more in a three-run seventh that sent Nolan Ryan to the showers. White added a run-scoring double in the ninth. Brian Downing crashed a three-run homer in the eighth and Dan Ford added a solo shot in the ninth for the Angels.

Twins 5, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Walks and mental mistakes doomed the White Sox as the Twins needed only three of their six hits to score all their runs in a 5-3 victory. The first run came in the second inning when Ron Jackson, who had singled, scored from second after an infield bouncer by Hosken Powell took a bad hop off first baseman Lamar Johnson. The runner missed the plate but came back to touch it while catcher Bill Nahorodny showed the umpire that he had held the ball. Jackson's three-run homer in the following frame followed passes to Bob Randall and Roy Smalley. In the fifth, Bombo Rivera walked, moved to second on a walk to Smalley, took third on a fly ball, and scored when Smalley was caught in a rundown on an attempted steal with two outs.

Yankees 3, Indians 2 at New York (night game):
Manager Billy Martin emptied his bullpen to quell a ninth-inning Indian uprising in a 3-2 Yankees' victory. A sacrifice fly by Mickey Rivers scored Bobby Brown in the third and a walk to Graig Nettles, double by Lou Piniella and triple by Darryl Jones plated two in the eighth to give the Yankees a 3-0 margin. Singles by Toby Harrah, Andre Thornton and Mike Hargrove scored one run before Don Hood replaced Ron Davis on the hill. Rick Manning promptly singled to score Thornton and bring on Ray Burris to face Cliff Johnson, who walked on 12 pitches to load the bases. Ken Clay replaced Burris and his first offering to Duane Kuiper resulted in a game-ending double play that preserved Catfish Hunter's first victory of the season.

A's 6, Rangers 5 at Oakland (night game):
After his inside-the-park homer with one man on capped a four-run fourth inning, Larry Murray doubled home what proved to be the winning run in the sixth in the A's 6-5 decision over the Rangers. The two-bagger plated Mitchell Page, who had reached when left fielder Richie Zisk misplayed his fly ball. Tony Armas drove in two runs with a homer in the third and a single in the fourth.

Brewers 15, Mariners 8 at Seattle (night game):
The Brewers counted three homers and four doubles among their 15 hits in a 15-8 pasting of the Mariners. Charlie Moore and Robin Yount each collected a double, homer, and three runs batted in. The Mariners lashed out 16 hits themselves, including homers by Mario Mendoza, Willie Horton and Tom Paciorek, the latter's a three-run pinch-hit job in the sixth, but were never closer than four runs after Thomas' two-run circuit clout in the first and a four-run rally in the second.

Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Wildness, first to the plate and then to first base, sent Bob Welch to his fifth defeat in the Dodgers' 3-2 fall to the Braves. After plunking Bob Horner with a pitch to open the fourth, he threw a bouncer by Jeff Burroughs into right field. A single by Glenn Hubbard scored Horner and a double by Pepe Frias sent Burroughs home with the tying run. Tony Brizzolara then helped himself gain his second win with a sacrifice fly that counted Hubbard. Gene Garber picked up his 13th save.

Giants 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Rookie lefthander Phil Nastu weathered solo homers by George Foster and Dan Driessen to pitch the Giants to a 3-2 defeat of the Reds. The Giants scored twice in the first. Jack Clark's double sent Terry Whitfield, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to third and left first base open for an intentional pass to Willie McCovey. Bill Madlock then singled home a pair. Whitfield's double scored Bill North in the ninth for what looked like an insurance run. It proved to be the winning run when Driessen homered in the home half. Ray Knight and pinch-hitter Junior Kennedy singled and moved up on a passed ball before Tom Griffin snuffed the Reds' hopes by retiring Johnny Bench on a foul pop to McCovey.

Astros 2, Padres 1 at Houston (night game):
Joe Niekro became the majors' first 11-game winner with assistance from Joe Sambito, who gained his sixth save and worked in his 17th straight game without allowing an earned run, and Denny Walling, who picked up his sixth hit and fourth RBI in his last seven pinch-hit appearances. After Jeff Leonard doubled home Craig Reynolds with the tying run in the seventh, Walling stroked a single that scored Leonard and gave the Astros a 2-1 victory over the Padres. Sambito worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by fanning Jerry Turner and inducing Gene Tenace to bounce to the mound.

Expos 6, Phillies 5 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos opened their lead over the Phillies to 5½ games by knocking them off for the seventh time in as many meetings, 6-5. Andre Dawson brought home the Expos' first run with a sacrifice fly in the third and knocked in the team's final two tallies with a single in the fifth after Chris Speier singled and Warren Cromartie and Rodney Scott walked. The Phillies rallied for three runs in the sixth on a homer by Garry Maddox, singles by Manny Trillo and Bob Boone, an error by Speier and single by Bake McBride. Elias Sosa foreclosed any further comeback with two innings of hitless relief.

Pirates 7, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-out two-run double by Phil Garner capped a three-run first inning and gave the Pirates all the scoring they needed to beat the Cubs, 7-2, and extend their winning streak to six games. Dave Kingman socked his 25th homer of the season for the Cubs.

Cardinals 4, Mets 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Solo homers by Ted Simmons, his 17th and 18th of the season, lifted the Cardinals to a 4-2 decision over the Mets. The first blast came in the opening frame after Garry Templeton singled, stole second, went to third on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Keith Hernandez. The second homer snapped a 2-2 tie in the seventh and was Simmons' eighth game-winning RBI of the season. Later in the inning, Silvio Martinez gave himself an insurance run with a sacrifice fly that scored George Hendrick.
