Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 8, Tigers 6 (night game) / Orioles 6, Tigers 5 at Baltimore (night game):
The sizzling Orioles thrilled a home crowd of 45,814 by sweeping a twinbill from the Tigers, 8-6 and 6-5, to extend their winning streak to nine games. In the opener, the Birds finally overcame a 6-1 deficit on a homer by Eddie Murray in the ninth after John Hiller had walked Al Bumbry and Ken Singleton. Tippy Martinez notched his fifth relief win, blanking the Tigers through the final four frames without a hit. The nightcap triumph also came on late-inning lightning. Ken Singleton tied the score at 5-5 with a two-run single in the seventh, and the winning run scored when John Lowenstein reached on an error by Dave Machemer in the eighth, advanced to second on a walk to Rich Dauer and scored on a two-out single by pinch-hitter Terry Crowley.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3 at Boston (day game):
Enjoying life in Bosox doubleknits, Bob Watson hit Tom Buskey's first pitch of the 11th inning just inside the left field foul pole to give the Red Sox a 4-3 verdict over the Blue Jays. The Sox pulled into a 3-3 tie in the fifth on a single by Butch Hobson, double by Gary Allenson and single by Rick Burleson, but were blanked thereafter by Mark Lemongello and Buskey until Watson decided the issue.

Royals 13, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Whitey Herzog became the second manager in a week to be ejected for complaining too stridently that Jim Barr is doctoring the ball, but any illegal tactics on the pitcher's part failed to prevent his being raked for five runs in 4 2/3 innings by the Royals en route to their 13-4 pasting of the Angels. Amos Otis, who drove home five runs, cracked a three-run homer to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth. Willie Wilson and George Scott each had four hits and knocked in a run in the Royals' seven-run eighth inning that put the game away. Larry Gura now has a 7-0 lifetime mark vs. the Angels.

Twins 6, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Dave Goltz scattered seven singles and struck out nine as the Twins cruised by the White Sox, 6-1. Roy Smalley's sacrifice fly gave the Twins their first run in the third. Run-producing singles by John Castino and Dave Edwards and a squeeze bunt by Glenn Borgmann stretched the lead to 4-0 before Milt May singled home Alan Bannister in the sixth for the only Sox run.

Yankees 6, Indians 5 at New York (night game):
After falling behind, 5-0, the Yankees rallied for three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth, on a double by Mickey Rivers and two-out homer by Graig Nettles, to send the game into extra innings before prevailing in the 10th on a ground-rule double by Bucky Dent, 6-5. Tommy John's road to becoming the league's first 11-game winner was threatened by the Tribe's big fourth inning, but the Yanks started their rebound in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Darryl Jones and a two-run double to right by Rivers. Willie Randolph walked with one down in the 10th and took second on Juan Beniquez' infield single to set the stage for Dent's looping double behind first base.

Rangers 8, A's 5 at Oakland (day game):
The A's third triple play of the season tied a major league record shared by four other clubs but could not prevent ultimate defeat by the Rangers, 8-5, in ten innings. Jim Kern garnered his ninth win with 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief when Bump Wills led off the extra stanza with a single and scored when Dave Roberts, inserted for Pat Putnam after the count reached 2-1, homered to left. Eric Soderholm singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Oscar Gamble's fourth hit of the game. The triple killing came in the fourth after hits by Gamble and Billy Sample. Johnny Grubb, attempting to bunt, popped to Wayne Gross, who caught the ball but then threw wildly in an effort to double Gamble. Center fielder Tony Armas backed up the play and threw to Dave Chalk to erase Gamble anyway and then alertly sprinted to first base to take Chalk's throw that wiped out Sample and completed a most bizarre triple play.

Mariners 8, Brewers 3 at Seattle (night game):
The eighth grand slam of Willie Horton's career was the major blow in an 8-3 Mariners' victory that snapped the Brewers' six-game winning streak. Bruce Bochte opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first, Larry Cox drove home a run with a single in the second, and Dan Meyer stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with a homer following a single by Horton in the third. Two frames later, Horton kayoed Lary Sorensen with his wallop over the left-center field fence.

Braves 7, Dodgers 3 at Atlanta (day game):
Aided by five walks by Jerry Reuss, the Braves scored three times in the first inning and went on to hand the Dodgers a 7-3 loss. Jerry Royster opened the inning with a walk and scored on a double by Gary Matthews. Two walks later, Matthews scored on a double play, and Glenn Hubbard singled home Bob Horner with the third run. Matthews walked and scored on a single by Jeff Burroughs in fourth. The Braves picked up three more in the eighth on a double by Bruce Benedict and singles by Mike Lum, Royster and Horner.

Giants 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
A three-run third inning carried the Giants to a 5-2 victory, their seventh in nine games against the Reds this season. John Curtis opened the decisive inning with a bunt single. Bill North, who scored the Giants' first run on Mike Ivie's two-out single in the first inning, singled. A single by Jack Clark scored Curtis and sent North to third, whence he scored on a long fly to right by Ivie. A single by Bill Madlock then plated Clark. Gary Lavelle pitched three innings of hitless relief to record his ninth save.

Astros 3, Padres 2 at Houston (night game):
For the second straight night, the Astros came from behind to beat the Padres by one run, this time by a 3-2 score. The comeback began with two out in the eighth and the bases empty. Art Howe doubled and Terry Puhl singled to score pinch-runner Jimmy Sexton. Cesar Cedeno opened the ninth with a single off Rollie Fingers, stole second and scored on a pinch-single by Walling, who took second on the throw to the plate and advanced to third on a groundout by Enos Cabell. Jose Cruz and Julio Gonzalez were walked to load the bases before Alan Ashby, pinch-hitting for Bruce Bochy, singled to center to end the game.

Expos 3, Phillies 0 at Montreal (night game):
A single to right field by Dave Rader with two out in the eighth inning was all that staved off complete humiliation for the Phillies as the defending N. L. East champions lost for 23rd time in 34 games and for the eighth straight time to the Expos, 3-0. The one-hitter was the fourth of Steve Rogers' career. A throwing error by Rader gave the Expos the only run they needed. With two out in the first, Andre Dawson singled, stole second and scored on the catcher's errant peg.

Cubs 4, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bill Buckner cracked a two-run homer in the fourth and Steve Ontiveros doubled home Bobby Murcer and then scored on Tim Blackwell's single in the seventh to enable the Cubs to pin a 4-3 defeat on the Pirates. Dave Parker's three RBIs could not prevent the first Buc loss in seven games. Bruce Sutter was credited with his 17th save, although he was scored against for the first time this month after a string of 12 scoreless innings.
