Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 6, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (day game):
The Tigers defeated the Orioles, 6-4, ending the Birds' nine-game winning streak and the 10-game winning streak of Dennis Martinez. The score was 4-4 entering the ninth when Dave Machemer got a bloop double but was thrown out at third on an attempted sacrifice by Jerry Morales. Rusty Staub then tripled to the right-center wall and Jason Thompson followed with a single that scored pinch-runner Phil Mankowski.

Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 4 at Boston (day game):
Two-run homers by Fred Lynn and Carl Yastrzemski highlighted an 8-4 triumph by the Red Sox over the Blue Jays. After the Jays scored twice in the top of vfirst inning, Lynn tied the score when he followed Tom Poquette's single with his 19th homer. Poquette's sacrifice fly in the third frame gave the Sox the lead for good. The Sox erupted for four runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Lynn, a sacrifice fly by Jim Rice and Yaz's two-run shot.

Royals 5, Angels 2 at California (day game):
Freddie Patek and George Brett each drove in a pair of runs and Dennis Leonard unfurled a three-hitter as the Royals defeated the Angels, 5-2. Patek drove in runs with groundouts in the second and sixth innings and Brett clouted a two-run homer in the ninth.

[DH] Twins 4, White Sox 3 (day game) / Twins 7, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
The Twins swept a doubleheader from the White Sox, winning the first game, 4-3, and capturing the second game, 7-1. In the opener, the score was 3-3 when Bombo Rivera opened the Twins' seventh inning with a single. Roy Smalley forced Rivera at second and went to third on a single by Ron Jackson. Steve Trout replaced Rich Wortham on the mound for the Sox and Dave Edwards singled to center to score Smalley. Mike Bacsik pitched the final 4 1/3 innings and retired all 13 batters he faced. In the nightcap, Smalley belted three doubles to pace the Twins' 11-hit attack. Smalley doubled in the first inning and scored on a single by Glenn Adams. Smalley opened the third with a two-bagger and tallied on a single by Ken Landreaux. In the eighth stanza, a two-run double by Hosken Powell was followed by Smalley's third double.

Yankees 8, Indians 2 at New York (day game):
Extending their winning streak to four games, the Yankees downed the Indians, 8-2. The Yanks got three runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Lou Piniella, Darryl Jones and Chris Chambliss. They added another tally in the fifth on consecutive doubles by Thurman Munson and Piniella and scored four times in the eighth on singles by Jim Spencer, Chambliss, Juan Beniquez and Fred Stanley, a sacrifice fly by Bucky Dent and two-run single by Munson.

[DH] Rangers 5, A's 1 (day game) / Rangers 7, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
The Rangers took both ends of a twin bill from the A's, winning 5-1 in the first game and 7-2 in the second contest. The Texans picked up all of their runs in the opener in the fifth inning. With one out, singles by Larvell Blanks, Bump Wills and Buddy Bell loaded the bases. Pat Putnam then singled home a pair of runs and John Ellis followed with a three-run homer. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a bases-loaded out by Richie Zisk and broke the game open with a three-run uprising in the eighth. Billy Sample and Ellis drew walks from starter Dave Hamilton, who was derricked in favor of Dave Heaverlo. Putnam batted for Zisk and belted the reliever's first pitch into the right field seats.

Brewers 7, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Pushing across three runs in the top of the 12th inning, the Brewers subdued Seattle, 7-4. An RBI single by Paul Molitor with one out in the 12th broke a 4-4 tie and singles by Dick Davis and Gorman Thomas produced two more runs. The Mariners had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI groundout by Willie Horton and a fielder's choice grounder by Leon Roberts.

Braves 4, Dodgers 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Hurling his first major-league complete game, Rick Matula pitched the Braves to a 4-2 triumph over the Dodgers. The Braves sent 10 batters to the plate and pounded out seven straight singles in the fourth inning. With one out, Gary Matthews singled, stole second and scored on a single by Rowland Office. Singles by Bob Horner and Jeff Burroughs loaded the bases and Joe Nolan followed with a two-run single. After Glenn Hubbard singled, Pepe Frias delivered a run-scoring single.

Reds 8, Giants 7 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Reds snapped their four-game losing streak by edging the Giants, 8-7. The Reds, behind 6-1 after five innings, scored in the sixth on a two-run homer by George Foster and added four runs in the seventh on five hits, the key blow being a bases-loaded single by Johnny Bench. A sacrifice fly by Ken Griffey with the bases loaded in the eighth inning plated the winning run.

Astros 4, Padres 1 at Houston (day game):
Posting their sixth straight victory, the Astros downed the Padres, 4-1. Terry Puhl singled, stole second, took third on a single by Craig Reynolds and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cesar Cedeno to give the Astros a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added a pair of tallies in the second frame on a single by Denny Walling, double by Alan Ashby and sacrifice fly by Joaquin Andujar. Jose Cruz drove home the final marker in the fifth when he singled home Craig Reynolds.

Phillies 5, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
Larry Christenson hit a homer and two doubles, scored twice and pitched the first six innings as the Phillies defeated the Expos, 5-2, for the first time this season after eight straight losses. The Phils took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a double by Christenson and RBI singles by Pete Rose and Greg Luzinski. Christenson belted his round-tripper in the fourth frame. The Phils added insurance markers in the eighth on run-scoring singles by Bob Boone and Bake McBride.

Cubs 5, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Scattering five hits and getting the Cubs' first complete game since May 18, Rick Reuschel hurled the Cubs to a 5-0 blanking of the Pirates. Bill Buckner gave the Cubs the lead with a solo homer in the first inning. They iced the contest in the eighth with a four-run outburst climaxed by a three-run homer by Jerry Martin. Martin's blast came off reliever Enrique Romo with Scot Thompson and Buckner on base after Ivan DeJesus had scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer.

Mets 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Getting relief help from Dale Murray, Andy Hassler picked up his first National League victory as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 6-2, before a Cap Day crowd of 50,163, the third largest regular season crowd in Busch Stadium history. The Mets jumped ahead, 2-0, in their first turn at bat when Frank Taveras led off with a single, went to second on pitcher Bob Forsch's wild pickoff attempt and scored on a single by Elliott Maddox. After Richie Hebner walked, Maddox took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez. The Mets scored four times in the seventh on doubles by Montanez and Joel Youngblood, and singles by Doug Flynn, Maddox and Lee Mazzilli.
