Orioles 3, Indians 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A sacrifice fly that Bobby Bonds dropped in right field allowed two runs to score and resulted in the Indians losing to the Orioles, 3-2. The Orioles trailed, 1-0, going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Al Bumbry drew a one-out walk, stole second and reached third on a throwing error by catcher Gary Alexander. After Kiko Garcia walked, Ken Singleton lined a fly to Bonds, who dropped it as Bumbry and Garcia scored. After Eddie Murray was retired, a double by Gary Roenicke produced the third run of the inning.
Blue Jays 3, Yankees 1 at Toronto (night game):
A three-run homer by Al Woods backed the three-hit pitching of Tom Underwood as the Blue Jays posted a 3-1 triumph over the Yankees. In the fifth inning, Rico Carty stroked a leadoff single. John Mayberry followed with another single and Woods then cleared the left field fence with his second round-tripper of the season. Underwood struck out two and walked three in pitching his seventh complete game of the season.
Cubs 8, Phillies 2 at Chicago (day game):
Blasting four pitchers for 14 hits, the Cubs pounded out an 8-2 triumph over the Phillies. The Cub attack began with three runs in the first inning on a double by Bill Buckner, single by Dave Kingman and homer by Jerry Martin. The Cubs picked up five more runs in the second inning, featuring a bases-loaded triple by Ivan DeJesus.
[DH] Reds 2, Astros 1 (night game) / Astros 4, Reds 0 at Houston (night game):
The Reds snapped the Astros' six-game winning streak by taking the first game of a doubleheader, 2-1, but the Astros came back to win the second game, 4-0. In the opener, Tom Seaver and two relievers combined on a three-hitter. Th eReds scored both their runs in the first inning. Ken Griffey drew a two-out walk and George Foster followed with a long homer into the second tier of the left field seats. In the nightcap, Randy Niemann hurled a six-hitter and the Astros scored all their runs in the seventh stanza. A single by Craig Reynolds and a walk to Cesar Cedeno began the uprising and brought on Dave Tomlin in relief of starter Mike LaCoss. A double by Jose Cruz drove in the first run. Enos Cabell reached reliever Manny Sarmiento for a two-run triple and scored on a single by Denny Walling.
Dodgers 4, Padres 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run homer by Joe Ferguson in the ninth inning powered the Dodgers to a 4-3 triumph over the Padres. Ron Cey drew a leadoff walk. One out later, Ferguson belted his round-tripper to score pinch-runner Ted Martinez ahead of him. The Padres built an early 3-0 lead, but homers by Cey in the fourth and sixth innings cut the deficit to 3-2.
[DH] Pirates 8, Mets 1 (night game) / Mets 4, Pirates 0 at New York (night game):
Dividing a twin bill, the Pirates captured the first game, 8-1, and the Mets took the second, 4-0. In the opener, John Candelaria tossed a five-hitter, retiring 16 of the first 17 batters he faced. The Pirates broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Rennie Stennett. Two other runs came across on a wild pitch and a hit batsman with the bases loaded. In the nightcap, Pete Falcone won his first game this season, pitching his first shutout and complete game in two years. The Mets jumped to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame, unloading six straight hits. Lee Mazzilli belted a homer for two runs and a single by Steve Henderson produced another pair.
Braves 6, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Combining on a four-hitter, Eddie Solomon and Craig Skok hurled the Braves to a 6-1 triumph over the Giants. Joe Nolan clouted a solo homer for the Braves in the second inning. The Braves added a pair of runs in the third on a walk to Jerry Royster, double by Gary Matthews and single by Rowland Office. A single by Office and homer by Jeff Burroughs produced two more tallies in the sixth stanza.
Expos 8, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Expos racked up a pair of victories over the Cardinals, 3-2 and 8-2. The first game was the completion of the suspended contest of May 17 which was halted because of traveling schedules. When the game resumed in the top of the 11th inning, Warren Cromartie hit Buddy Schultz' second pitch over the right field wall to produce the winning tally for the Expos. The Expos exploded for five runs in the first inning of the second game. Singles by Cromartie and Rodney Scott and a walk to Gary Carter loaded the bases with two out. A single by Jerry White drove home two markers and Larry Parrish cleared the sacks with a three-run homer. Later, Cromartie hit his second homer of the night.
