Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Indians 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Palmer fired a four-hitter as the Orioles posted a 3-1 verdict over the Indians. Consecutive singles by Rich Dauer, Rick Dempsey and Kiko Garcia gave the Orioles a run in the third inning and they added two more in the seventh on a two-out single by Garcia, double by Pat Kelly and single by Ken Singleton.

Red Sox 3, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Red Sox scored two runs in the ninth inning to take a 3-1 decision from the Tigers. Jim Rice opened the rally with a double, Bob Watson walked and, after one out, Butch Hobson drilled a double to plate Rice, breaking a 1-1 tie. Following a 43-minute rain delay, Tom Poquette gave the Sox an insurance run with a sacrifice fly as the Bosox won for the sixth time in the last seven games.

Royals 10, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
With Al Cowens and Pete LaCock each driving in three runs, the Royals rolled to a 10-3 conquest of the A's. Cowens knocked one run home in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly and two more with a double in the seventh stanza. LaCock smacked an RBI double in the fourth, added a sacrifice fly in the fifth and followed Cowens' seventh-inning two-bagger with another double as the Royals posted their fifth straight victory.

Brewers 9, Twins 8 at Minnesota (night game):
After building up a 9-0 lead, the Brewers just managed to hang on and edge the Twins, 9-8. Ben Oglivie clouted two homers, starting with a blow in the fourth inning. Gorman Thomas smacked a two-run round-tripper to ignite a six-run outburst by the Brewers in the fifth. Oglivie followed with his second blast of the game. Charlie Moore doubled in two runs and Paul Molitor stroked an RBI single for a 9-0 lead. A two-run homer by Glenn Adams drew the Twins to within one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Jerry Augustine came on to retire the last two batters and preserve the Brewer victory.

Mariners 4, White Sox 3 at Seattle (night game):
A bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning gave the Mariners the winning run in a 4-3 triumph over the White Sox. Bill Stein lashed a one-out triple. Bobby Valentine and Leon Roberts then received intentional walks to load the bases, but the strategy failed when Ruppert Jones walked to force in pinch-runner Joe Simpson with the game-ending tally.

Rangers 4, Angels 2 at Texas (night game):
Batting .606 in his last 12 games, Oscar Gamble drove in three runs with a single and a homer to boost the Rangers to a 4-2 triumph over the Angels. Gamble plated Bump Wills with a first-inning single and after Buddy Bell walked in the third, Gamble rocketed the ball deep into the right field seats. Johnny Grubb knocked in the Rangers' final run in the sixth with a two-bagger.

Cubs 11, Phillies 4 at Chicago (day game):
Racking six pitchers for 17 hits, the Cubs enjoyed an 11-4 pounding of the Phiilies. Dave Kingman belted his 26th homer of the campaign, connecting with a man on base in the first inning, and Jerry Martin clouted a two-run round-tripper in the third, marking the fourth straight game in which he had hit for the circuit. Winning pitcher Mike Krukow hit his first career homer in the fourth inning but was ejected from the game in the seventh after he and Phillie reliever Kevin Saucier became involved in an altercation after Krukow was hit by a pitch.

Reds 9, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Rick Auerbach in the fifth inning sparked the Reds to a 9-1 victory as Fred Norman tossed a six-hitter in going the route against the Dodgers for the second time this season. Joe Morgan got the Reds started in the fifth with a homer. A double by Ken Griffey, walk to George Foster and single by Arturo DeFreites loaded the bases before Auerbach cleared the sacks with one of his three two-base hits in the game. The Reds added three more runs in the sixth, one on a double by Foster and two on a single by Johnny Bench.

Mets 12, Pirates 9 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Erupting for five runs in the ninth inning, the Mets defeated the Pirates, 12-9. Willie Montanez and Steve Henderson began the Mets' rally with consecutive homers to tie the score at 9-9. Doug Flynn followed with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice and, after Joel Youngblood received an intentional walk, scored on a single by Elliott Maddox. After Lee Mazzilli popped out, Richie Hebner put the game on ice with a two-run single.

[DH] Padres 2, Braves 1 (night game) / Braves 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
After the Padres won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, the Braves captured the second game, 5-2. In the lidlifter, the Braves led, 1-0, going into the bottom of the ninth when Jerry Turner began the Padre rally with a single, advanced to third on a single by Jay Johnstone and scored on an infield hit by Fernando Gonzalez. Pinch-hitter Gene Tenace drew a walk to fill the bases and after pinch-hitter Broderick Perkins fouled out, pinch-hitter Kurt Bevacqua walked on a 3-1 pitch to force home the winning run. A two-run double by Glenn Hubbard in the sixth inning was the Braves' key blow of the second contest. The score was 1-1 entering the sixth when Gary Matthews and Bob Horner opened with singles. Two outs later, Hubbard punched a double down the right field line. The Braves picked up another tally in the eighth on a double by Bruce Benedict and the final run in the ninth on a throwing error by Padre second baseman Gonzalez.

Giants 6, Astros 3 at San Francisco (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Willie McCovey drove in the tie-breaking run in a six-run eighth inning that carried the Giants to a 6-3 triumph over the Astros. The Giants began their winning rally with one out when Johnnie LeMaster and Marc Hill singled. A pinch-hit double by Mike Ivie plated LeMaster and brought on Tom Dixon in relief of starter Ken Forsch for the Astros. Bill North stroked a two-run single, stole second and reached third on a throwing error. After Terry Whitfield walked, Jack Clark grounded to third, but North escaped a rundown and returned safely to third base. Joe Sambito replaced Dixon and McCovey singled to left, scoring North. Darrell Evans then followed with a two-run double to cap the scoring.

Cardinals 5, Expos 0 at St. Louis (night game):
A two-out single in the eighth inning by Duffy Dyer spoiled Silvio Martinez' bid for a no-hitter as the Cards whitewashed the Expos, 5-0. The only other baserunner against Martinez was Andre Dawson, who reached first base on an error by Lou Brock in the opening inning. The Cards scored in the first inning when Garry Templeton singled, stole second and scored on a single by Dane Iorg. The Redbirds added three runs in the second after loading the bases on singles by Ken Oberkfell, Mike Phillips and Templeton. Brock singled home two tallies and an infield hit by Tony Scott scored another.
