Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Royals 4 at Boston (night game):
A two-run homer by Dwight Evans in the ninth inning lifted the Red Sox to a 6-4 triumph over the Royals. With two out, Butch Hobson punched a single to left and was replaced by pinch-runner Jim Dwyer before Evans cracked his 11th homer of the season and 100th of his career. Mike Torrez worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

Angels 17, A's 6 at California (night game):
Don Baylor drove in five runs with a two-run homer, double and sacrifice fly as the Angels scored 10 eighth-inning runs en route to their sixth straight victory, a 17-6 drubbing of the A's. Baylor's circuit clout came in the seventh stanza and brought the Angels back from a 6-5 deficit. Carney Lansford, who had four hits and scored four runs, singled home one eighth-inning run and A's center fielder Rickey Henderson committed two errors as 12 consecutive Angels reached base.

White Sox 16, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning, the White Sox routed the Indians, 16-4. The White Sox took a 4-0 lead in the second inning on two walks, a hit batman and three singles. Chet Lemon belted a solo homer in the third. In the big fifth, the White Sox sent 13 batters to the plate. Wayne Nordhagen clouted his first career grand slam, Claudell Washington connected for a three-run round-tripper and Rusty Torres smacked a solo blast.

Blue Jays 7, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
A three-run homer by pinch-hitter Otto Velez in the 11th inning enabled the Blue Jays to edge the Tigers, 7-6. The score was 4-4 going into the 11th when Joe Cannon stroked a one-out single and Danny Ainge drew a walk after Cannon stole second. Velez then batted for Luis Gomez and hit the first pitch into the left field seats. Rusty Staub hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning.

Twins 7, Mariners 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run homer by Roy Smalley capped a five-run fourth inning as the Twins downed the Mariners, 7-2, behind the four-hit pitching of Jerry Koosman. Ron Jackson and Rob Wilfong each hit sacrifice flies before Smalley's blast into the right field seats. Hosken Powell belted a solo homer in the third and drove in another run with a single in the seventh.

Yankees 4, Brewers 3 at New York (night game):
A three-run homer by Reggie Jackson highlighted the Yankees' 4-3 victory over the Brewers. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Willie Randolph walked, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a single by Thurman Munson. In the third, Munson and Lou Piniella singled with two out and Jackson followed with a round-tripper, his third in six games since he returned from the disabled list. Airtight relief pitching by Jim Kaat and Ron Davis stopped a Brewer rally in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and one out.

Rangers 9, Orioles 5 at Texas (night game):
Paced by Bump Wills, who had four hits, the Rangers completed a three-game series sweep of the Orioles with a 9-5 victory. Wills led off the first inning with the single and scored on a homer by Billy Sample. The Rangers added two other runs in the same frame. Wills and Sample both singled in the second and scored on a double by John Ellis. Wills singled home Jim Sundberg in the third and tripled to plate Johnny Grubb in the sixth before scoring himself on a sacrifice fly by Sample.

Braves 7, Giants 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Wiping out a 5-0 deficit, the Braves posted their fifth straight victory, beating the Giants, 7-6. After the Braves tied the score at 6-6, Pepe Frias led off the eighth inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by Bruce Benedict and to third on an infield out by Darrel Chaney. With Jerry Royster at the plate, Frias bluffed a steal of home and when Giants' reliever Gary Lavelle balked, Frias was waved home to give the Braves their winning run.

Expos 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Warren Cromartie and Ellis Valentine powered the Expos to a 2-1 triumph over the Cubs. Cromartie, leading off the game, got life when third baseman Steve Ontiveros dropped his pop foul for an error. Cromartie then hit a homer into the right field bleachers. Valentine's circuit clout opened the Expos' fifth frame. The homers were the only hits off loser Bill Caudill, who worked the first seven innings.

Astros 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Rallying for two runs in the seventh inning, the Astros rolled to their sixth straight victory and opened up a 10-game lead in the N. L. West by edging the Reds, 3-2. The Astros trailed, 2-1, entering the seventh, but Jose Cruz batted in the tying run with a double and Jeff Leonard hit a pinch-single for the deciding tally. The teams engaged in a sixth-inning free-for-all after Reds' starter Bill Bonham threw at Astros' starter Joaquin Andujar in retaliation for the latter's throwing close to Joe Morgan in the fourth frame. Reds' third baseman Ray Knight and Astros' first baseman Cesar Cedeno were ejected after the brawl.

Phillies 1, Mets 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pitching his fifth career one-hitter, Steve Carlton hurled the Phillies to a 1-0 triumph over the Mets. The only hit off the veteran lefty was a double by Elliott Maddox with one out in the seventh inning. The Phillies' run came in the third frame on consecutive doubles by Carlton and Bake McBride.

Padres 6, Dodgers 0 at San Diego (night game):
A two-hitter by Bob Shirley -- his first major league shutout -- carried the Padres to a 6-0 decision over the Dodgers. Dave Winfield clouted a homer in the third inning following singles by Ozzie Smith and Paul Dade. Gene Richards stroked an RBI single in the fourth and Dan Briggs hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Pirates 6, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
A pair of doubles by Bill Madlock and a pair of homers by Willie Stargell paced the Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals. Madlock's first two-bagger drove in two runs in the first inning and his second made it 3-0 in the third. Ed Ott led off the fourth with a solo homer and Stargell clouted bases-empty round-trippers in the fifth and seventh innings. Grant Jackson retired the last seven Card batters to record his 10th save of the season.
