Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Royals 4 at Boston (day game):
The fourth single of the game by Bob Watson drove home the winning run in the eighth inning as the Red Sox edged the Royals, 5-4. Jim Rice drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Tom Poquette before Watson delivered the deciding blow. The Royals had a 4-0 lead, but Butch Hobson drove in a run with a double in the second, Rice homered in the fifth and Rick Burleson tied the score with a two-run single in the seventh.

A's 3, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Rick Langford allowed one hit -- an infield single by Brian Downing in the fifth inning -- as the A's notched a 3-0 victory, ending the Angels' six-game winning streak. Downing's hit was a high hopper that third baseman Wayne Gross gloved, but his throw to first was not in time. The A's scored twice in the seventh when Jeff Newman drew a leadoff walk and came home on a double by Gross, who moved to third on a groundout and tallied on a single by Jim Essian. Essian also had an RBI double in the ninth.

White Sox 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
The winning run scored on a throwing error as the White Sox posted a 5-4 decision over the Indians. The score was 4-4 going into the ninth when Claudell Washington opened with a walk and took second on a sacrifice. Pinch-hitter Garr then drew a walk. With Alan Bannister batting, Washington broke for third. Indians' catcher Ron Hassey elected to try for Garr, who had bluffed a run at second, but threw the ball into center field, allowing Washington to continue home.

Tigers 3, Blue Jays 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers edged the Blue Jays, 3-2, behind the combined five-hit pitching of Kip Young and Aurelio Lopez. Ron LeFlore scored the initial Tiger run in the first inning when he walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a groundout. Lou Whitaker walked to open the fifth, went to third on Blue Jay catcher Rick Cerone's errant pickoff throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Thompson. Champ Summers belted a homer in the eighth.

Mariners 4, Twins 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Rick Honeycutt fired a three-hitter as the Mariners whitewashed the Twins, 4-0. The Mariners grabbed the lead in the third inning when Larry Cox walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Willie Horton. They added another marker in the fourth when Leon Roberts doubled, advanced to third on an error and tallied on a groundout. The final pair counted in the ninth on a run-scoring single by Horton and sacrifice fly by Tom Paciorek.

Brewers 3, Yankees 0 at New York (day game):
Lary Sorensen pitched a two-hitter for the Brewers and shut out the Yankees, 3-0. The Milwaukee hurler retired 20 straight batters before walking Reggie Jackson to start the eighth inning. One out later, Chris Chambiiss broke up the no-hitter with a sharp single to right. Bucky Dent singled for the other hit in the ninth. In both the eighth and ninth, Sorensen got out of trouble with double plays started by first baseman Don Money. On both plays, Sorensen covered first base for the second out. Sal Bando homered for the Brewers in the fifth and their other runs scored in the sixth on a double by Paul Molitor, single by Dick Davis and an error by Yankees third sacker Graig Nettles.

Braves 5, Giants 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Posting their sixth straight victory, the Braves edged the Giants, 5-4. The Braves trailed, 4-3, going into the bottom of the ninth inning when Mike Lum stroked a leadoff single and was replaced by pinch-runner Glenn Hubbard, who reached second on a sacrifice and scored on a pinch-single by Biff Pocoroba, who took second on the throw home. Barry Bonnell ran for Pocoroba and scored the game-winning run on a single by Rowland Office.

Cubs 3, Expos 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs pushed across two runs in the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and gain a 3-1 victory over the Expos. Rick Reuschel drew a one-out walk in the fifth and moved to third on a two-out single by Scot Thompson. A double by Bill Buckner scored Reuschel and Thompson when catcher Gary Carter's pickoff attempt sailed into left field. Bruce Sutter took over in the eighth and retired the last five batters in order to record his 18th save.

Reds 5, Astros 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
A three-run uprising in the sixth inning carried the Reds to a 5-4 triumph over the Astros, ending Houston's six-game winning streak. After Harry Spilman led off the Reds' sixth with a pinch-single, Ken Griffey and Cesar Geronimo bunted safely. On Geronimo's bunt, third baseman Enos Cabell threw wildly to first, enabling Spilman to score. Joe Morgan was walked intentionally and, one out later, Dan Driessen walked to force home the tie-breaking run. Ray Knight then plated the third tally of the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Mets 3, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Scattering eight hits, Craig Swan pitched the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Phillies. Joel Youngblood led off the game with a homer.

Cardinals 2, Pirates 0 at St. Louis (night game):
John Fulgham hurled his first major league shutout as the Cardinals topped the Pirates, 2-0. The Redbirds scored both runs in the first inning. Lou Brock singled and scored on a double by Keith Hernandez, who then tallied on a single by George Hendrick. Hendrick made a game-saving catch in the top of the ninth when he leaped high off the fence to snare a line drive off the bat of pinch-hitter John Milner with runners on second and third and two out.
