Angels 7, Orioles 3 at California (night game):
Two homers by Don Baylor and one by Bobby Grich powered the Angels to a 7-3 victory over the Orioles, who had round-trippers by Ken Singleton and Doug DeCinces. Singleton homered with a man on base in the third inning. The Angels tied the score with a two-run double by Jim Anderson in their half before taking the lead with Baylor's first homer of the game in the fourth. DeCinces knotted the count with his clout in the sixth, but in the seventh the Angels overpowered the Orioles with two-run homers by Grich and Baylor.

Indians 6, Twins 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Mike Hargrove, who entered the game with a .170 batting average, rapped a double and single, driving in two runs, to help the Indians defeat the Twins, 6-5. After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Indians made it 5-0 in the fourth when Gary Alexander singled, Hargrove doubled and Tom Veryzer singled. The Twins came back with a four-run rally in the fifth, but the Indians scored what proved to be the deciding run in their half on singles by Toby Harrah, Ron Hassey and Hargrove.

White Sox 4, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Although held to only six hits, the White Sox were able to gain a 4-1 victory over the Royals, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. The White Sox scored three runs, all unearned, in the fifth inning with the aid of errors by George Scott and Paul Splittorff. Wayne Nordhagen accounted for the game's only earned run with a homer in the sixth. The Royals' tally off Steve Trout also was tainted on an error by Junior Moore.

[DH] Tigers 7, Brewers 4 (night game) / Tigers 5, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Celebrating his 25th birthday, Jason Thompson rapped three hits in the first game and smashed a two-run homer in the second game as the Tigers swept over the Brewers in a twi-night doubleheader, 7-4 and 5-4. Thompson batted in the Tigers' initial run in the opener with a single in the first inning and accounted for another RBI with a single in the eighth when the Tigers erupted for four runs. After Thompson's hit broke a 3-3 tie, the Tigers loaded the bases and Lance Parrish rapped a two-run single. The fourth run of the frame counted on a throwing error by Robin Yount. In the nightcap, Lou Whitaker walked in the sixth inning and Thompson followed with his homer to put the Tigers ahead, 4-3. Singles by Champ Summers and John Wockenfuss around a wild pitch by Jim Slaton then added what proved to be the winning run. A Cushion Night promotion helped attract the second largest crowd in Brewers' history, 54,630.

[DH] Yankees 4, A's 3 (night game) / Yankees 3, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
After winning the first game, 4-3, on a pass with the bases loaded, the Yankees completed their sweep of a twi-night doubleheader when Tommy John shut out the A's, 3-0, for his 13th victory. The Yankees had a two-run homer by Thurman Munson in the opener but were tied, 3-3, going into the eighth inning when a single by Graig Nettles, double by Chris Chambliss and intentional pass to Jim Spencer loaded the bases. Mike Norris, replacing Steve McCatty on the mound for the A's, struck out Bucky Dent but then passed Willie Randolph to force in the Yankees' deciding run. Ron Davis was winner in relief, boosting his record to 8-0. In the nightcap, the Yankees scored all their runs in the fourth inning. Randolph, Munson and Lou Piniella singled for the first tally. Reggie Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to deliver the second run and, after an infield hit by Darryl Jones, Chambliss doubled for the final marker.

Horton, who hit for the circuit in the second inning, came up in the sixth after the Mariners had tied the score at 3-3 on a bases-loaded single by Larry Milbourne. Incensed when he was hit by a pitch thrown by Dick Drago, Horton charged the mound, scuffled with the Red Sox reliever and was ejected from the game but received credit for an RBI. Bob Stinson batted in the Mariners' insurance run with a double in the seventh.

Blue Jays 5, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
A homer by Rick Cerone with two men on base in the fourth inning started the Blue Jays off to a 5-1 victory over the Rangers. Roy Howell doubled and John Mayberry walked ahead of Cerone's clout off John Henry Johnson. The Blue Jays' two other runs were unearned. Tom Underwood blanked the Rangers until the ninth when singles by Bump Wills, Billy Sample and Buddy Bell accounted for a run before Tom Buskey relieved and choked off the rally.

Joe Morgan homered for the Reds' initial run in the seventh. The Pirates tied the score with singles by Phil Garner and John Milner and an infield out by Tim Foli in the eighth. In the ninth, Morgan walked, Johnny Bench sacrificed and Dan Driessen was given an intentional pass. After Ray Knight forced Morgan at third, Foster batted for Paul Blair and hit his winning single.
