Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Angels 2 at California (day game):
Homers by John Lowenstein and Billy Smith powered the Orioles to a 3-2 triumph over the Angels. The Orioles trailed, 2-0, when Lowenstein hit a solo homer with one out in the seventh inning. After a single by Eddie Murray, Smith blasted his round-tripper that produced the winning margin.

[DH] Indians 5, Twins 4 (day game) / Twins 7, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians won the first game of a doubleheader from the Twins, 5-4, when reliever Mike Marshall threw a sacrifice bunt away in the ninth inning, but the Twins rebounded in the second contest behind the seven-hit pitching of Dave Goltz to prevail, 7-2. After the Twins scored twice in the top of the ninth in the lidlifter to tie the score at 4-4, Ron Hassey led off the Tribe half with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Dave Rosello. Dell Alston was intentionally walked and when Duane Kuiper bunted down the third base line, Marshall, trying for the forceout at third, fired the ball into left field as Rosello scored the winning run. Willie Norwood singled home two of the Twins' three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and Dave Edwards belted a solo homer in the sixth. Roy Smalley's single to center drove in a seventh-inning marker.

White Sox 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (day game):
The White Sox handed the Royals their eighth loss in the last nine games, 4-2. The White Sox scored twice in the first inning on doubles by Ralph Garr, Jorge Orta and Chet Lemon. Greg Pryor smacked a leadoff homer in the second and Milt May followed with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and registered the final Sox run on a single by Garr.

[DH] Brewers 5, Tigers 4 (day game) / Brewers 3, Tigers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers swept a doubleheader from the Tigers, 5-4 and 3-1, as Ben Oglivie clouted three homers in the first game and doubled in a run in the second contest. In the opener, Oglivie homered leading off the second and sixth innings and belted a two-run blast in the seventh stanza. Both Brewer starters went the route, Mike Caldwell doing so for the 12th time this season in the first game and Bill Travers on a four-hitter in the nightcap.

Yankees 2, A's 0 at Oakland (day game):
Luis Tiant allowed just one baserunner -- on Rickey Henderson's line single to left in the third inning -- as the Yankees completed the four-game series sweep by whitewashing the A's, 2-0. The Yankees scored in the second inning on a homer by Reggie Jackson and in the fourth when Bobby Murcer was hit by a pitch, and after a pass to Jackson and a wild pitch, scored on a single by Lou Piniella.

Red Sox 8, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Two homers by Carlton Fisk and one each by Bob Watson and Dwight Evans highlighted a 14-hit attack as the Red Sox routed the Mariners, 8-2. The Red Sox jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A double by Rick Burleson and walks to Fred Lynn and Carl Yastrzemski loaded the bases. Burleson scored on an infield hit by Watson, Lynn scored when Fisk was hit by a pitch and Yaz scored when Butch Hobson drew a base on balls. Watson and Fisk hit back-to-back homers in the third frame and Fisk clouted a leadoff homer in the fifth. Evans also connected in the fifth with the bases empty.

Rangers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Texas (night game):
A three-run homer by John Ellis in the sixth inning lifted the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays. The Rangers trailed, 3-1, going into the bottom of the sixth, when Bump Wills opened with a single. After two outs, Richie Zisk walked and Ellis followed with his eighth circuit clout of the season.

Braves 6, Cardinals 5 at Atlanta (night game):
After squandering a three-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, the Braves pushed across a run in the bottom of the frame to edge the Cardinals, 6-5. The Cards tied the game with a three-run outburst, capped by a two-out, two-run homer by Garry Templeton. In the Braves' ninth, Pepe Frias doubled with one out and, after pinch-hitter Jeff Burroughs received an intentional walk, Jerry Royster singled to plate Frias with the winning run.

Cubs 10, Astros 0 at Chicago (day game):
Pounding four pitchers for 17 hits, the Cubs blanked the Astros, 10-0. A three-run homer by Ivan DeJesus capped a five-run second inning. The game was delayed by rain for 50 minutes in the sixth inning. Donnie Moore relieved Mike Krukow after the delay and hurled the final three frames to complete the shutout and get his first save.

[DH] Reds 4, Pirates 2 (day game) / Pirates 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Reds won the opener of a doubleheader, 4-2, before the Pirates came back to capture the nightcap, 2-1, In the first game, a three-run homer by Dan Driessen lifted the Reds to victory. Driessen's circuit clout came in the fourth inning after a double by Junior Kennedy and infield single by Johnny Bench. In the second game, the score was 1-1 going into the ninth inning when Willie Stargell cracked a round-tripper with one out to give the Bucs their triumph.

Dodgers 8, Expos 6 at Montreal (day game):
The cellar-dwelling Dodgers snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Expos, 8-6, as Rick Sutcliffe pitched a five-hitter over 7 1/3 innings and drove in three runs with a sixth-inning double. In the L.A. sixth, singles by Steve Garvey and Ron Cey and a double by Derrel Thomas produced one run. Steve Yeager was given an intentional walk to load the bases, but Sutcliffe spoiled the strategy by drilling a two-bagger to the center field wall.

[DH] Padres 5, Mets 3 (day game) / Mets 4, Padres 1 at New York (day game):
Dividing a doubleheader, the Padres won the lidlifter, 5-3, as Gaylord Perry scattered eight hits in going the route, while the second game was taken by the Mets, 4-1, as Doug Flynn drove in three runs. In the first game, the Padres trailed, 3-2, going into the third inning, when a single by Gene Richards, sacrifice by Ozzie Smith, who reached safely on a throwing error by Met first baseman Willie Montanez, and two-run single by Dave Winfield produced a 4-3 lead. The Padres' final tally came in the sixth on an RBI single by Richards. In the second game, singles by Richie Hebner and Steve Henderson and a walk to Joel Youngblood loaded the bases for the Mets in the second inning and Flynn lined a two-bagger to the wall to clear the sacks.

Phillies 5, Giants 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
Mike Schmidt tied the game with a two-run homer in the sixth inning -- his fifth round-tripper in three games -- and Pete Rose singled home the decisive run in the seventh as the Phillies posted a 5-3 decision over the Giants. The Phils snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh when Bob Boone and Steve Carlton singled, Larry Bowa walked and Rose lined a two-out single to center. Manny Trillo doubled home the Phils' final tally in the eighth.
