Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 6, Red Sox 0 at California (night game):
Registering his 42nd career shutout, Nolan Ryan pitched the Angels to a 6-0 triumph over the Red Sox. The righthander struck out 12 batters, the 127th time in his career he has fanned 10 or more batters in a game. His third strikeout of the night gave him 2,837, moving him past Mickey Lolich into third place on the all-time list. The Angels scored three runs in the first inning on a walk to Brian Downing with the bases loaded and a two-run single by Joe Rudi.

White Sox 5, Rangers 4 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run rally in the sixth inning lifted the White Sox to a 5-4 verdict over the Rangers. The Sox trailed, 4-2, when singles by Jorge Orta and Lamar Johnson and an RBI double by Chet Lemon cut the margin to 4-3. Claudell Washington received an intentional walk to load the bases, but Greg Pryor was hit by a pitch to force home the tying run. The winning run crossed the plate when Milt May bounced into a double play.

Indians 8, Royals 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A homer barrage by the Indians buried the Royals, 8-2. Bobby Bonds clouted a two-run round-tripper in the first inning, Andre Thornton smacked a leadoff blast in the sixth, Mike Hargrove connected for a two-run shot in the seventh and Toby Harrah smacked a bases-empty blast in the eighth. It was the Royals' ninth loss in 10 games.

Twins 5, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
A run-scoring single by Ken Landreaux snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning as the Twins posted a 5-3 decision over the Tigers. Rob Wilfong led off the Twins' sixth with a bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Landreaux. Ron Jackson singled home an insurance tally in the ninth as Mike Marshall gained his 17th save in his 52nd appearance of the season.

Orioles 7, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Extending their lead in the A. L. East to three games, the Orioles thumped the A's, 7-3. The Birds scored four times in the second inning. John Lowenstein singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Doug DeCinces walked and both runners advanced on another wild pitch. A single by Rich Dauer scored one run, a double by Rick Dempsey netted a second, a sacrifice fly by Al Bumbry produced the third and a single by Kiko Garcia capped the rally. Two errors by A's third baseman Dave Chalk paved the way for two runs by the Orioles in the third frame and Ken Singleton clouted a solo homer in the ninth.

Blue Jays 7, Brewers 1 at Toronto (night game):
Scattering four hits, Dave Stieb hurled his first major-league complete game as the Blue Jays thumped the Brewers, 7-1. Roy Howell clouted a solo homer in the first inning and Al Woods hit a bases-empty inside-the-park round-tripper in the second. A single by Howell and two-run homer by John Mayberry produced another pair of runs in the fourth frame. Rick Cerone doubled home two Jay markers in the sixth.

Cubs 7, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Steve Ontiveros climaxed a four-run first inning with a two-run homer and doubled in another run in the fifth, leading the Cubs to their fourth straight victory, a 7-4 triumph over the Braves. Jerry Martin and Larry Biittner had already driven in runs before Ontiveros connected off Phil Niekro -- the 25th homer off the knuckleballer this season. An RBI groundout by Scot Thompson produced a third-inning marker and the Cubs added another pair in the fifth on consecutive doubles by Martin, Biittner and Ontiveros.

Cardinals 6, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A pair of RBI singles by Ken Oberkfell paced the Cardinals to a 6-3 victory over the Reds. In the second inning, Terry Kennedy smacked a run-scoring double and came home on a single by Oberkfell. A sacrifice fly by Keith Hernandez produced a fifth-inning marker and the Redbirds added two more tallies in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Oberkfell and Garry Templeton.

Expos 3, Dodgers 0 at Montreal (night game):
Starring both on the mound and at the plate, Bill Lee led the Expos to a 3-0 blanking of the Dodgers. The lefty scattered seven hits en route to his third shutout of the season and drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single. With one out in the fifth, Gary Carter drew a walk, Ellis Valentine singled and Larry Parrish doubled for one run. One out later, Lee followed with a single that delivered Parrish and Valentine.

Phillies 4, Giants 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
With rookie Dickie Noles gaining credit for his first major league victory and Mike Schmidt continuing his torrid slugging, the Phillies gained a 4-2 decision over the Giants. Schmidt, with six homers in his last 12 at-bats, slammed his 29th round-tripper of the season after a single by Pete Rose in the seventh inning. The third sacker also batted in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a groundout after walks to Bake McBride and Pete Rose and a single by Larry Bowa loaded the bases.
