Angels 8, Yankees 7 at California (night game):
The Angels, who rallied to tie the score with two homers by Don Baylor and one by Joe Rudi, capped their comeback with a run in the 12th inning to defeat the Yankees, 8-7. The Yankees took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning, three runs scoring on a homer by Chris Chambliss, who also connected for the circuit in the fifth. The Angels picked up a pair in the sixth before Baylor and Rudi homered off Rich Gossage in the eighth. Reggie Jackson batted in a run with a single in the ninth to put the Yankees ahead, 7-4, but with two out in the Angels' half, Carney Lansford and Dan Ford hit singles and Baylor followed with a homer to tie the score. Ron Davis, who had an 8-0 record in relief for the Yankees, suffered his first defeat in the 12th when Brian Downing doubled, Joe Rudi sacrificed and Merv Rettenmund singled over a drawn-in outfield.
White Sox 12, Tigers 4 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox smashed six homers, including three by Claudell Washington, to overpower the Tigers, 12-4. Washington started the barrage with a solo swat in the third inning. Ralph Garr connected with a man on base in the sixth. Washington and Rusty Torres hit consecutive homers in the seventh and, after one out, Jim Morrison came through with his first round-tripper in the American League. Washington capped his power show with a two-run wallop in the eighth. The Tigers had a homer by John Wockenfuss.
Rangers 7, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Buddy Bell carried the Rangers to a 7-3 victory over the Royals, who were saddled with their seventh straight loss and 14th in the last 15 games. The Rangers loaded the bases in the second on singles by Pat Putnam and Johnny Grubb and a pass to Mike Jorgensen. Jim Sundberg singled, driving in one run, before Bell unloaded against Rich Gale for the fifth slam of his career. Jim Kern, who pitched the last three innings in relief of winner Fergie Jenkins, gained his 16th save to set a Rangers' club record.
Brewers 10, Indians 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Gorman Thomas hit two homers and Sal Bando and Dick Davis added one apiece, slugging the Brewers to a 10-3 victory over the Indians. The crowd of 33,731 at the game boosted the Brewers' attendance over the million mark at the earliest date in the club's history. Thomas hit his first homer of the game following a double by Davis in the first inning, and connected again in the third after Don Money was safe on an error and Davis walked. One out later, Bando also hit for the circuit. A homer by Davis accounted for two of the Brewers' final four runs in the sixth.
Red Sox 8, A's 7 at Oakland (day game):
After blowing a 4-0 lead, the Red Sox came from behind with three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the A's, 8-7. Butch Hobson hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox in the fourth. The A's rallied to tie the score at 5-5 and then took the lead when Tony Armas homered with a man on base in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Larry Wolfe sparked the Red Sox in the ninth with a double and scored on singles by Jim Dwyer and Jim Rice. Carl Yastrzemski followed with a single to drive in the tying run. Rice took third on the hit. After an intentional pass to Bob Watson, Carlton Fisk hit a sacrifice fly to provide the winning run.
Orioles 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Although held to six hits, the Orioles profited from homers by Ken Singleton and Eddie Murray to defeat the Mariners, 5-2. Singleton hit his 20th of the season in the first inning, matching his total for 1978. The Orioles added a pair in the second on a pass to John Lowenstein, double by Doug DeCinces, single by Pat Kelly and sacrifice fly by Rich Dauer. Murray then provided two extra runs with his homer following a single by Kiko Garcia in the eighth.
Blue Jays 4, Twins 2 at Toronto (day game):
The Blue Jays tagged Jerry Koosman for three runs in the second inning and added a homer by Rick Bosetti in the third to defeat the Twins, 4-2, behind the pitching of rookie Dave Stieb. In the second, Rico Carty doubled and scored when third baseman Mike Cubbage threw wildly on a grounder by Otto Velez. Rick Cerone sent Velez home with a double and counted himself on a single by Danny Ainge.
Pirates 5, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
John Candelaria pitched a five-hitter, but four unearned runs accounted for the difference when the Pirates defeated the Braves, 5-1. Bob Horner committed three errors, resulting in three tainted tallies. The Pirates' only earned run came in the seventh inning when Omar Moreno homered. An error by Jerry Royster added an unearned run in the same stanza before Horner hit for the circuit in the Braves' half to deprive Candelaria of a shutout.
Cubs 1, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
A single by Steve Ontiveros in the eighth inning drove in the game's lone run and enabled the Cubs to edge the Reds, 1-0. Ken Henderson led off the eighth with a double and Jerry Martin bunted safely. Mike LaCoss, making a rare relief appearance for the Reds, replaced Bonham. Henderson was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Larry Biittner before Ontiveros came through with his single to drive in Martin. Mike Krukow was the winner with relief help from Dick Tidrow in the eighth. Bruce Sutter took over the in the ninth and picked up his 22nd save.
Astros 3, Cardinals 2 at Houston (night game):
The Astros ended their seven-game losing streak by defeating the Cardinals, 3-2. The Cards counted their pair, one unearned, in the sixth inning before the Astros came back to tie the score in their half. Terry Puhl singled and was forced by Craig Reynolds. Jose Cruz singled, sending Reynolds to third. Cruz then stole second for the Astros' 100th theft of the season and both runners scored on a single by Enos Cabell. The winning run followed in the seventh when Puhl doubled and Reynolds singled.
Padres 5, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Fred Kendall drove in two runs with a double and Gene Richards added a pair with a homer to enable the Padres to defeat the Expos, 5-1. Kendall sent the Padres off to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. In the sixth, Kurt Bevacqua was safe on an error by Rodney Scott, Fernando Gonzalez singled and Kendall sacrificed. Bill Lee, pitching for the Expos, was called for a balk, allowing Bevacqua to score. Richards followed with his homer. The Expos were saved from a shutout at the hands of Randy Jones when Ellis Valentine hit for the circuit in the home half of the sixth.
Mets 3, Giants 2 at New York (day game):
Steve Henderson scored one run and drove in another to help the Mets defeat the Giants, 3-2, behind the six-hit pitching of Tom Hausman. The victory was the Mets' fifth straight. The Mets took a two-run lead in the second inning on a single by Henderson, pass to John Stearns, single by Willie Montanez and sacrifice fly by Doug Flynn. After the Giants put together three hits and an error for the tying pair in the third, the Mets scored the deciding run in their half on an infield hit by Frank Taveras and a double by Henderson.
Phillies 10, Dodgers 7 at Philadelphia (day game):
A three-run homer by Bake McBride and two-run smash by Mike Schmidt highlighted the Phillies' attack in a 10-7 victory over the Dodgers. After the round-trippers helped produce a 7-1 lead, the Phillies decided the outcome in the fifth inning when Garry Maddox drove in a run with a double and later scored himself on a passed ball by Joe Ferguson. The Dodgers awoke in the last three innings, scoring two runs on a homer by Davey Lopes in the seventh, picking up another tally in the eighth and chasing reliever Ron Reed in the ninth before Tug McGraw took over to halt the three-run rally.
