[DH] Angels 4, Orioles 3 (night game) / Orioles 3, Angels 0 at Baltimore (night game):
The Angels won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-3, in 11 innings, but the Orioles came back to capture the second game, 3-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Mike Flanagan. The score was 3-3 in the first game when Rick Miller opened the Angels' 11th with a single. Carney Lansford bunted and both runners were safe when Dennis Martinez' throw on an attempted forceout skipped off the glove of Kiko Garcia. Miller took third on the error. Dan Ford then singled through the drawn-in infield to plate Miller. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning of the second game on doubles by Gary Roenicke and Rick Dempsey and extended their lead in the sixth on a two-run double by Roenicke.

Red Sox 7, Mariners 1 at Boston (night game):
Winning their fifth straight game, the Red Sox thumped the Mariners, 7-1. A sacrifice fly by Rick Burleson produced a second-inning run and Larry Wolfe connected for a two-run homer in the fifth after a single by Burleson. In the sixth stanza, Dwight Evans doubled and came home on a double by Burleson. Butch Hobson homered in the eighth when the Red Sox closed out their scoring.

Indians 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Airtight relief pitching by Sid Monge enabled the Indians to gain a 2-1 triumph over the Royals. Monge came on in the ninth inning with one run in, the bases loaded and none out and prevented further scoring. The Tribe got both its runs in the first inning on a single by Jim Norris, an error by Dennis Leonard on a sacrifice bunt, a single by Andre Thornton and sacrifice fly by Cliff Johnson.

Brewers 3, Blue Jays 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
A homer by Sixto Lezcano in the 11th inning lifted the Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Lezcano's blow came with one out and snapped the 2-2 tie which had been manufactured by the Brewers in the eighth on a solo homer by Ben Oglivie.

Tigers 8, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Unbeaten rookie Pat Underwood got credit for his fifth straight victory as the Tigers pounded out an 8-3 decision over the Twins. The Tigers scored four times in the fourth inning on triples by Lance Parrish and Alan Trammell, a double by Ron LeFlore and single by Lynn Jones. Errors by John Castino and Roy Smalley helped the Tigers to two more runs in the sixth.

Yankees 10, A's 2 at New York (night game):
Unleashing a 17-hit attack, the Yankees routed the A's, 10-2. A pair of solo homers by Jeff Newman enabled the A's to carry a 2-2 tie into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Yankees scored twice, one run coming home on a single by Willie Randolph and the other on a bases-loaded walk to Brian Doyle. Reggie Jackson belted a two-run homer in the sixth, Bucky Dent drove in a run with a single in the seventh and Doyle added a two-run double in the eighth.

[DH] White Sox 9, Rangers 6 (day game) / White Sox 5, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
The White Sox took both ends of a doubleheader from the Rangers, 9-6 and 5-4. In the opener, a three-run homer by Lamar Johnson in the fifth inning erased a 4-3 Ranger bulge and gave the Chisox a lead they never relinquished. A solo homer by Che tLemon broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning of the second game and the Pale Hose added an insurance marker in the eighth frame.

Braves 8, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Scattering six hits, Phil Niekro pitched the Braves to an 8-2 victory over the Cubs as Jeff Burroughs drove in three runs. The Braves scored six runs in the fifth inning, two coming home on a bases-loaded single by Rowland Office, two more on another bases-loaded single by Burroughs. The final pair of the outburst counted on an error by Larry Biittner and a wild pitch by Dick Tidrow. Burroughs connected for a solo homer in the ninth.

Dodgers 7, Expos 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Homers by Steve Yeager, Joe Ferguson and Davey Lopes powered the Dodgers to a 7-3 victory over the Expos, ending a five-game losing streak. Yeager drilled a three-run round-tripper in the second inning, Ferguson hit an inside-the-park homer in the fourth and Lopes added a two-run blast later in the same frame. Burt Hooton snapped his personal four-game losing skein.

[DH] Pirates 9, Astros 5 (night game) / Pirates 4, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the slumping Astros, 9-5 and 4-2. In the first game, Willie Stargell put the Bucs ahead, 5-3, in the third inning with a two-run homer. After Houston tied the score, Phil Garner slammed a two-run round-tripper in the sixth to give the Pirates a 7-5 bulge and they added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Bruce Kison gave up only four hits over eight innings of the second game. John Milner clouted a two-run homer in the first inning. The Pirates' other markers came in the fifth frame on an RBI single by Kison and sacrifice fly by Dave Parker.

Padres 3, Mets 1 at San Diego (night game):
Randy Jones tossed an eight-hitter and Dave Winfield clouted his 23rd homer to lead the Padres to a 3-1 decision over the Mets. Winfield's round-tripper led off the fifth inning. The Padres added another run in the sixth on doubles by Jones and ozzie Smith. Their final tally came across in the seventh on a passed ball.

Giants 1, Phillies 0 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants beat the Phillies as John Curtis pitched his second consecutive 1-0 victory. The Giants' run came in the fourth inning when Joe Strain singled, went to second on an infield out, advanced to third on a long fly by Willie McCovey and came home on a double by Darrell Evans.

Reds 16, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Driving in six runs with a single, a sacrifice fly and his first career grand slam, Ray Knight paced the Reds to a 16-4 walloping of the Cardinals. The Reds erupted for five runs in their first turn at bat on a walk to Joe Morgan, singles by Ken Griffey, Dave Concepcion and Knight, a walk to Johnny Bench and singles by Cesar Geronimo and Fred Norman. Knight's bases-loaded clout came in the ninth inning.
