Orioles 4, A's 1 at Baltimore (day game):
A tie-breaking homer by Eddie Murray triggered a three-run eighth inning that carried the Orioles to a 4-1 victory over Oakland. After Murray's blow, the Orioles added two more runs in the inning on a single by Doug DeCinces and sacrifice fly by Rich Dauer.

Red Sox 6, Angels 5 at Boston (day game):
After tying the game with three runs in the ninth inning, the Red Sox scored a run in the 10th to vanquish the Angels, 6-5. Trailing, 5-2, in the ninth, the Red Sox pulled even with a double by Carlton Fisk, an error by Angel shortstop Jim Anderson and three-run homer by Dwight Evans. Fred Lynn led off the 10th with a single, moved to second on a walk to Carl Yastrzemski and scored on a single by Bob Watson.

[DH] Brewers 14, Indians 5 (day game) / Brewers 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Extending their winning streak to 10, the Brewers rolled past the Indians twice, 14-5 and 5-3. A homer barrage buried the Tribe in the first game. Robin Yount smacked a two-run blast in the third inning, Cecil Cooper connected for the circuit in the fourth and eighth innings and Sixto Lezcano drilled a round-tripper in the fifth. The Brewers picked up three runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap, two scoring on a single by Sal Bando and one on a single by Buck Martinez. They added a pair in the seventh on a single by Bando, pass to Yount, double by Jim Wohlford and sacrifice fly by Martinez.

Tigers 1, White Sox 0 at Detroit (day game):
The Tigers shut out the White Sox, 1-0, behind the combined pitching of Milt Wilcox and Aurelio Lopez. The reliever pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to preserve the victory. The Tiger run came when Champ Summers drew a one-out walk in the second stanza, stole second with two out and came home on a single by Jerry Morales.

Twins 13, Blue Jays 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Led by Glenn Adams, who had three hits including a homer, the Twins routed the Blue Jays, 13-1. The Twins collected six consecutive hits in the seventh inning with Butch Wynegar, Hosken Powell and Mike Cubbage singling in runs and Rob Wilfong adding a two-run single. Adams hit his solo homer in the fourth, singled in the sixth and stroked a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Yankees 4, Mariners 0 at New York (day game):
Don Hood and Jim Kaat combined on a three-hitter as the Yankees blanked the Mariners, 4-0. After Hood left game in the fifth inning because of cramps in his left shoulder, Kaat took over and hurled hitless ball the rest of the way. The Yanks scored in the second inning when Reggie Jackson was hit by a pitch, went to third on a single by Roy White and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Chambliss. They added a pair of runs in the third on an RBI single by Thurman Munson and sacrifice fly by White, and posted their final marker in the fifth when Bobby Murcer drew a leadoff walk and came home on a double by Munson.

Royals 7, Rangers 6 at Texas (night game):
Although George Brett blasted three homers, the Royals needed a run on a single by Willie vWilson in the ninth inning to edge the Rangers, 7-6. Al Cowens opened the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. After Frank White was intentionally walked and U.L. Washington singled to load the bases, Jim Kern replaced Sparky Lyle on the hill for the Rangers. Wilson greeted Kern with a single up the middle to plate Cowens, although White was thrown out trying to score on the same hit. Brett drove in five runs with his round-trippers.

[DH] Reds 12, Cubs 1 (day game) / Cubs 8, Reds 4 at Chicago (day game):
After being trounced by the Reds, 12-1, the Cubs came back to win the second game of a doubleheader, 8-4. Dave Concepcion sparked the Reds in the opener, driving in five runs with a single and a grand-slam homer. Junior Kennedy added his first major league round-tripper with a man on base in the ninth. Bill Bonham scattered 10 hits in going the distance for the first time in 17 starts. A bases-loaded single by Larry Biittner in the sixth inning was the key blow for the Cubs in the second game. The score was 4-4 when the Cubs filled the sacks off Mario Soto on a single by Scot Thompson sandwiched by a pair of walks. After Dave Tomlin replaced Soto, Biittner delivered his hit that produced two runs. The Cubs added a pair in the seventh on a single by Jerry Martin, triple by Steve Dillard and pinch-single by Dave Kingman.

Dodgers 4, Mets 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers pushed across a run in the ninth to edge the Mets, 4-3. The Mets had tied the score at 3-3 in the top of ninth before Steve Yeager drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by pinch-hitter Manny Mota. Davey Lopes then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt and Yeager raced across the plate with the winning run.

[DH] Pirates 5, Braves 4 (day game) / Pirates 3, Braves 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates moved to within a half-game of the first-place Expos in the N. L. East by sweeping a doubleheader from the Braves, 5-4 and 3-2. In the first game, which was delayed twice by rain for almost four hours, the Bucs came from behind with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when pinch-hitter Mike Easler singled with the bases loaded. In the nightcap, winning pitcher Jim Bibby delivered a two-run homer in the fourth inning to produce the deciding margin. The round-tripper followed a double by Steve Nicosia. Kent Tekulve hurled the final three innings of the first game to register his 15th save and recorded the final three outs in the second game for his 16th.

Phillies 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
The Phillies downed the Padres, 5-2, as Nino Espinosa and Tug McGraw combined on a six-hitter. The Phillies tallied twice in the second inning on singles by Mike Schmidt and Garry Maddox, a stolen base by Maddox and two-run single by Greg Gross. Espinosa helped himself with an RBI single in the fourth and Schmidt connected for his 33rd homer of the season in the seventh.

[DH] Giants 8, Expos 6 (day game) / Expos 15, Giants 5 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants won the opener of a doubleheader, 8-6, but the Expos pounded out a 15-5 triumph in the nightcap. Bill North sparked the Giants in the first game, driving in three runs with a leadoff homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the fourth. Darrell Evans clouted a solo round-tripper in the fifth. In the second game, the Expos sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth frame, when they scored five runs, and 10 more to bat in the fifth, when they added four more. Ellis Valentine, who had a homer in the lidlifter, led the 18-hit attack with three hits, including a homer.

Astros 7, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (day game):
Scoring with the help of a balk in the ninth inning, the Astros ended their five-game losing streak by edging the Cardinals, 7-6. Julio Gonzalez opened the Astros' ninth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a two-out balk by Redbird reliever Will McEnaney and scored when Jose Cruz legged out an infield hit.
