The Mariners snapped the Orioles' seven-game winning streak and ended their own four-game losing skein with a 5-4 victory. Ruppert Jones drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. After his first RBI double in the fifth inning, Jones highlighted a three-run rally in the seventh with a two-run double and then scored on a single by Bruce Bochte.

Red Sox 16, A's 4 at Boston (night game):
Jim Rice drove in five runs on a pair of homers as the Red Sox routed the A's, 16-4. The Red Sox piled up five runs in the first inning. Rice belted a round-tripper following a two-out walk to Fred Lynn. After singles by Carl Yastrzemski and Bob Watson, Carlton Fisk connected for a three-run circuit clout. Rice drilled his second homer of the game in the next inning following two-out singles by Jack Brohamer and Lynn.

White Sox 6, Royals 2 at Chicago (night game):
Chet Lemon scored the tie-breaking run after escaping a rundown in the bottom of the eighth inning as the White Sox scored a 6-2 victory over the Royals. Lemon led off with a double and reached third when Royal left fielder Willie Wilson misplayed the ball. After Jorge Orta walked, Lamar Johnson hit a dribbler in front of the plate. Relief pitcher Dan Quisenberry fielded the ball and trapped Lemon in a rundown. Lemon headed for the plate and avoided the tag to score. Quisenberry was charged with an error. Subsequently in the same frame, Bill Nahorodny broke the game open with a three-run double.

Tigers 11, Brewers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Supporting the five-hit pitching of Jack Morris with a 16-hit attack, the Tigers defeated the Brewers, 11-2. The score was 2-2 in the seventh when the Tigers broke through for two tallies. A walk to Alan Trammell, single by Ron LeFlore, sacrifice by Lou Whitaker and single by Steve Kemp snapped the deadlock. The Tigers dented the plate seven times in the eighth inning including homers by Lance Parrish, John Wockenfuss and Champ Summers.

Indians 2, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):

Ryan was flown back to California for X-rays. The Angels scored three times in the second inning. A double by Joe Rudi and a pair of walks loaded the bases. One run scored when catcher Jerry Narron's return throw eluded pitcher Tommy John. The second tally came across on a single by Rod Carew and the third registered when Narron threw wildly as Carew stole second. The Angels wrapped up the game in the eighth with a two-run single by Rudi, sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich and RBI groundout by Jim Anderson.

The Braves trailed, 4-3, going into the seventh, when George Frazier came on to pitch for the Redbirds. Consecutive singles by Gary Matthews, Rowland Office and Bob Horner tied the score and brought on the exit of Frazier and entrance of Mark Littell, who walked Dale Murphy to load the bases.
