Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 12, Mariners 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Lee May belted a grand-slam homer and Ken Singleton drove in five runs with a homer and single, powering the Orioles to a 12-1 rout of the Mariners. The Orioles opened a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Singleton connected for his 24th round-tripper with two mates aboard. The Orioles then erupted for nine runs in the fourth, all coming after two out. Key hits in the big inning were a two-run single by Singleton and May's 11th career bases-loaded blast, which followed singles by Eddie Murray and John Lowenstein and a walk to Doug DeCinces.

A's 8, Red Sox 6 at Boston (day game):
Ending their five-game losing skein, the A's beat the Red Sox, 8-6. Mitchell Page belted a two-run homer in the first inning and socked a two-run double in the fifth. After the Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run homer by Fred Lynn, the A's kayoed Sox starter Steve Renko in the sixth on a two-out double by Jim Essian and four straight singles. Tony Armas blasted a solo round-tripper for the A's in the eighth before Dwight Evans countered with a two-run shot in the Red Sox half.

Royals 6, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run homer by Freddie Patek, his first of the season, helped lift the Royals to a 6-1 victory over the White Sox. Ross Baumgarten retired the first 13 Royals before Al Cowens singled in the fifth inning. George Scott walked and a double by John Wathan plated Cowens. Patek then unloaded his drive into the left field seats. Amos Otis added a solo homer in the sixth.

Tigers 5, Brewers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Raising his record to 3-1, 20-year-old rookie Dan Petry scattered seven hits as the Tigers notched a 5-2 decision over the Brewers. The Tigers scored four runs in the third inning. Alan Trammell singled with one out, stole second and tallied on a single by Ron LeFlore. LeFlore then stole second and, after Lou Whitaker walked, Jason Thompson cracked a three-run homer. Tom Brookens connected for a solo homer in the seventh.

Indians 7, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
The Indians completed the three-game series sweep by scalding the Twins, 7-2. The Tribe broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a run-scoring triple by Mike Hargrove and added single tallies in the sixth and eighth on doubles by Ted Cox. The Indians' final two runs counted in the ninth on an RBI single by Dell Alston and a fielder's choice. Dan Spillner, making his first start in two years, pitched 6 1/3 innings and gained the victory.

Yankees 2, Angels 0 at New York (day game):
Ron Guidry tossed a three-hitter as the Yankees whitewashed the Angels, 2-0. The Yanks' runs came in the second inning on a double by Jim Spencer and singles by Jerry Narron, Brian Doyle and Bucky Dent.

Blue Jays 8, Rangers 4 at Toronto (night game):
Erupting for five runs in the second inning, the Blue Jays went on to post an 8-4 triumph over the Rangers. Rico Carty led off the Jays' second with a double. After a single by John Mayberry, Otto Velez blasted a three-run homer. Later in the inning, Danny Ainge stroked a two-run single. Velez hit his second round-tripper of the game in the seventh.

Dodgers 6, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
A triple by Derrel Thomas for his third RBI of the game snapped a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning and lifted the Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the Astros, extending their winning streak to five games. Rookie reliever Joe Beckwith got credit for his first major league victory. Thomas drove in Joe Ferguson with his triple and scored himself on the play when Astro shortstop Craig Reynolds mishandled the relay throw from the outfield. Thomas drove in two runs with a single and two more scored on an error by Astro left fielder Jose Cruz in the second.

Cubs 9, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Homers by Scot Thompson and Steve Ontiveros hightlighted the Cubs' 9-2 pounding of the Mets. The Cubs scored twice in the fourth inning on a leadoff round-tripper by Thompson, triple by Bill Buckner and sacrifice fly by Larry Biittner. Thompson drove home a fifth-inning tally with a sacrifice fly. The Cubs iced the game with a five-run outburst in the seventh stanza, two markers coming across on a single by Ivan DeJesus and the final three on a circuit clout by Ontiveros.

Reds 9, Pirates 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Driving in four runs with a homer and single, Johnny Bench led the Reds to a 9-7 triumph over the Pirates, who suffered their fourth straight defeat. Bench's third homer in two games came with two men on base in a four-run third inning and put the Reds ahead to stay, 6-5. Bench also added an RBI single in a two-run fourth frame. Dave Collins and Dan Driessen each had RBI doubles.

Giants 6, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Combining on a six hitter, Ed Whitson and Gary Lavelle pitched the Giants to a 6-2 decision over the Padres. The Giants took the lead in the first inning when Bill North singled, stole second, went to third on an error and came home on a sacrifice fly by Willie McCovey. After Jack Clark made it 3-0 in the fifth with a two-run single, the Giants put the game away in the ninth with an RBI pinch-single by Mike Ivie, an error, and a sacrifice fly by McCovey.

Cardinals 6, Braves 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Backing the five-hit pitching of Silvio Martinez with a 12-hit attack, the Cardinals prevailed over the Braves, 6-2. The Redbirds tallied twice in the first inning. After Lou Brock singled for his 2,980th hit and Ken Oberkfell grounded into a forceout, runs scored on a triple by Keith Hernandez and single by Ted Simmons. Simmons also had a run-scoring single in the fifth and George Hendrick doubled home two more markers in the same frame.
