Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 3, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Rob Wilfong hit a homer and Ken Landreaux figured in the Twins' two other runs to account for a 3-1 victory over the Angels. Don Baylor homered for the Angels' run in the fourth inning. Wilfong hit his matching blow in the sixth. Landreaux reached second on a two-base error by Angels' center fielder Dan Ford in the seventh and scored the tie-breaking tally on a single by Glenn Adams. Singles by John Castino and Ken Landreaux around a sacrifice by Butch Wynegar produced an insurance marker in the eighth.
Indians 7, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Cliff Johnson and Ted Cox homered in the second inning and Johnson drove in two more runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh to lead the Indians to a 7-2 victory over the White Sox.
Orioles 8, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Homers by Ken Singleton and Lee May provided an early five-run lead and propelled the Orioles to an 8-0 victory over the Royals behind the three-hit hurling of Mike Flanagan. Singleton smashed his homer with two men on base in the first inning and May connected with one aboard in the third.
Brewers 6, Yankees 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Tying the Milwaukee club record set by Ben Oglivie, who hit three homers in a game July 8, Cecil Cooper also smashed three and capped his slugging spree with a two-out drive in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees, 6-5. The game was marred by a brawl in the fourth inning when Reggie Jackson, after being brushed back twice by Mike Caldwell, threw his bat toward the mound after fouling out to Sal Bando. Jackson then charged the Brewers' pitcher and grabbed him by the throat, setting off a wrestling match and a general melee involving players from both clubs. Jackson was ejected. Cooper homered in the first inning and again with a man on base in the seventh. The Yankees tied score at 5-5 in the eighth when Mickey Rivers singled and Willie Randolph homered. Cooper's third blow pinned the loss on Rich Gossage.
Mariners 1, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Although collecting 11 hits, the A's were unable to score and lost to the Mariners, 1-0. Rick Langford, who was the victim of the tough-luck defeat, gave up only four hits, but the Mariners pushed over a run in the third inning on singles by Leon Roberts and Bob Stinson, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Larry Milbourne.
Rangers 11, Red Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
Staked to a nine-run lead after just two innings, Steve Comer had an easy time pitching the Rangers to an 11-2 victory over the Red Sox. Pat Putnam batted in two runs with a double in the first inning. The Rangers then piled up five runs in the second with doubles by Buddy Bell, Al Oliver and Richie Zisk among their hits. Comer lost his bid for a shutout when Bob Watson homered with a man on base in the eighth.
Tigers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
An unearned run in the 11th inning enabled the Tigers to defeat the Blue Jays, 4-3. The Tigers, who had a two-run homer by Tom Brookens and a solo shot by John Wockenfuss, were within one out of a 3-1 victory when Rick Cerone hit a two-run homer in the ninth to tie the score. In the 11th, Ed Putman doubled for the Tigers and yielded the basepaths to Lynn Jones. Ron LeFlore then grounded to Alfredo Griffin and when the Blue Jay shortstop threw wildly, Jones came home with the Tigers' winning run.
Reds 2, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Mike LaCoss scattered five hits in the first seven innings and Doug Bair yielded only one hit in the last two frames to combine in a shutout as the Reds defeated the Braves, 2-0. The Reds scored their initial run off Phil Niekro in the sixth. Joe Morgan singled, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Bruce Benedict and crossed the plate on a grounder by Dave Concepcion. Johnny Bench walked and Concepcion and Ray Knight singled for the other run in the eighth.
Dodgers 11, Astros 7 at Houston (night game):
The Dodgers built up an 11-0 lead with the help of a three-run homer by Dusty Baker and then held on to defeat the Astros, 11-7, for their sixth straight victory. The Dodgers put together singles by Ron Cey, Baker, Joe Ferguson and Derrel Thomas, together with a two-base error by Astros' left fielder Jose Cruz, for three runs in the second inning. Four singles and two walks produced five more runs in the third in a kayo of Joe Niekro. Baker hit his homer in the sixth. Charlie Hough, making only the third start of his major league career, gave up a run in the seventh and then was lifted in the eighth when the Astros rallied for six runs, including two each on singles by Terry Puhl and Jesus Alou.
[DH] Pirates 5, Expos 4 (night game) / Pirates 9, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
After Phil Garner made up for his error with the hit that won the first game, 5-4, the batting of John Milner and pitching of Bert Blyleven paced the Pirates to a 9-1 victory in the second game, completing the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Expos before 59,260, the largest crowd in Montreal's baseball history. In the opener, Larry Parrish drove in three runs for the Expos with a homer and double, while Garner had a homer for the Pirates before his wild throw on an infield hit by Tony Perez in the seventh enabled the Expos to tie the score at 4-4. Dave Parker opened the Pirates' eighth with a single and Bill Robinson sacrificed. Garner then made amends for his error, hitting a single to drive in Parker with the deciding run. In the nightcap, Blyleven pitched a five-hitter. Milner drove in four runs with a homer and single. Garner scored four times and batted in one run with a triple.
Cubs 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Dave Kingman hit his 31st and 32nd homers of the season and knocked in three of the Cubs' runs in a 4-2 victory over the Mets. After a solo swat by Kingman in the second inning, the Mets tied the score in the sixth, but Ivan DeJesus put the Cubs ahead again with a run-scoring double in the eighth. Kingman then provided the deciding margin, hitting his second homer of the game with a man on base in the ninth.
Cardinals 5, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Winning for the first time since June 2, Bob Forsch yielded only three hits and pitched the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory over the Phillies. A double by Lou Brock and single by Ted Simmons started the scoring in the first inning. The Cards added a pair in the second and capped their scoring with a pass to Keith Hernandez, double by Simmons and single by George Hendrick in the third.
Giants 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Giants accounted for all their runs with three homers, capping their attack with a circuit clout by Jack Clark in the 11th inning to beat the Padres, 4-3. The Padres got off to a two-run lead in the first, but the Giants pulled even in the fourth when Mike Ivie singled and Darrell Evans homered. After the Padres regained the lead with a triple by Ozzie Smith and sacrifice fly by Kurt Bevacqua in the fifth, Larry Herndon tied the score with a round-tripper in the seventh.
