Angels 9, Twins 3 at California (day game):
Scattering six hits over the first six innings, rookie Steve Eddy got credit for his first major league victory as the Angels topped the Twins, 9-3. The Angels scored twice in the first inning on a single by Rod Carew and homer by Dan Ford. Bobby Grich drove home Brian Downing with a triple in the third frame and stroked a run-scoring single in the fifth. The Angels' four-run eighth was capped with a three-run homer by Joe Rudi.
Indians 9, White Sox 6 at Chicago (day game):
A bases-loaded homer by Rick Manning capped a seven-run explosion in thesecond inning and propelled the Indians past the White Sox, 9-6, for their seventh straight victory. The big inning started when Cliff Johnson was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Ted Cox. Gary Alexander followed with a homer. Walks to Duane Kuiper and Mike Hargrove around a single by Tom Veryzer then loaded thebases for Manning, who connected for his third career grand slam.
Orioles 6, Royals 4 at Kansas City (day game):
Driving in four runs with a pair of homers, Gary Roenicke sparked the Orioles to a 6-4 victory over the Royals. Lee May doubled and Benny Ayala reached first on an error before Roenicke unloaded his first round-tripper to put the Birds ahead, 3-0, in the second inning. Roenicke clouted his 17th circuit clout of the season in the seventh. Doug DeCinces knocked in the other Oriole runs with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and single in the eighth.
Brewers 5, Yankees 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Completing a three-game series sweep, the Brewers defeated the Yankees, 5-3. The Brewers scored in the third inning on a walk to Paul Molitor and double by Don Money, and expanded their lead to 3-0 in the fourth frame with a run-scoring triple by Robin Yount and sacrifice fly by Jim Wohlford. A two-run single by Sixto Lezcano in the fifth completed the Brewer scoring. For the second time in three days, the teams engaged in a bench-clearing brawl. The Yankees' Lou Piniella and Brewer third baseman Jim Gantner were the principals. Piniella ran to third on a fielder's choice grounder and tried to knock the ball free instead of sliding. He ran past the base after being tagged out and Gantner charged after him. Third base coach Mike Ferraro intercepted Gantner and Piniella joined Ferraro and Gantner rolling on the ground as the benches cleared. Gantner was ejected from the game.
A's 2, Mariners 1 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Morgan fired a three-hitter to record his first major league victory after nine losses when the A's captured a 2-1 decision from the Mariners. The A's scored both runs in the first inning when Mariner first baseman Bruce Bochte allowed Mike Edwards' bases-loaded popup to drop safely and was charged with an error. Floyd Bannister absorbed the loss despite allowing only four hits.
Red Sox 3, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Airtight relief pitching by Dick Drago enabled the Red Sox to hold off the Rangers, 3-2. Drago protected a one-run lead by getting the final five outs. The Red Sox scored twice in the third inning on singles by Butch Hobson, Larry Wolfe and Rick Burleson and a sacrifice fly by Carlton Fisk. The deciding run followed in the sixth when Fred Lynn walked, went to third on a double by Jim Rice and scored on a groundout by Carl Yastrzemski.
Tigers 5, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
A pair of homers by Lance Parrish and a homer and single by Steve Kemp produced four runs as the Tigers downed the Blue Jays, 5-4. Parrish connected for the circuit in the second and fourth innings. Kemp drove in a run with a single in the third and added a homer in the fifth. The Tigers scored what proved to be their winning run on a single by Champ Summers in the eighth.
Reds 9, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Driving in five runs with two doubles and a homer, Ray Knight paced the Reds to a 9-4 thumping of the Braves. The Reds took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Knight and single by Cesar Geronimo. Knight drilled a two-run homer in the seventh and added a run-scoring double in the eighth.
Astros 4, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
The third hit of the game by Cesar Cedeno drove home the winning run in the ninth inning as the Astros edged the Dodgers, 4-3. With one out, J.R. Richard beat out an infield hit. Cedeno then tripled down the right field line, allowing Richard to score easily. The Dodgers had tied the contest in the seventh on a homer by Derrel Thomas.
Expos 5, Pirates 3 at Montreal (day game):
A four-run outburst in the first inning triggered a 5-3 victory over the Pirates, enabling the Expos to regain first place in the East division. Warren Cromartie led off with a double, reached third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Rusty Staub. After singles by Ellis Valentine and Gary Carter loaded the bases, Andre Dawson smashed a triple. Steve Rogers pitched his 10th complete game of the season.
Mets 4, Cubs 0 at New York (day game):
With Kevin Kobel and Ed Glynn combining on a two-hitter, the Mets won the first game of a scheduled doubleheader from the Cubs, 4-0. The contest was called because of rain with one out in the Mets' half of the seventh and the second game was postponed. The Mets scored in the third inning when Doug Flynn singled, went to second on a sacrifice, to third on a single by Frank Taveras and came home on a single by Lee Mazzilli. Richie Hebner belted a two-run homer in the fifth and Mazzilli drove in a run with a triple in the seventh just before the rain began.
Cardinals 6, Phillies 5 at Philadelphia (day game):
Going the distance for the seventh time this year, Pete Vuckovich pitched the Cardinals to a 6-5 victory to sweep the three-game series and hand the Phillies their sixth straight defeat. The Cards, after taking a 2-1 lead, stowed away the decision with four runs in the fifth inning. Vuckovich launched the stanza with a single, Garry Templeton doubled and Jerry Mumphrey drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A single by Keith Hernandez added a tally. Ted Simmons was hit by a pitch and was forced by George Hendrick. Tony Scott delivered a double to drive in Hernandez and when Greg Luzinski misplayed the ball in left field, Hendrick came home with the eventual decisive run. Mike Schmidt singled in the Phillies' first run in the fourth and clouted his 36th homer after a double by Pete Rose in the sixth. Luzinski also homered.
Giants 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
A two-run homer by Jack Clark climaxed a three-run third inning that lifted the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Padres. John Montefusco opened the stanza with a fly ball to left that fell between Jay Johnstone and Gene Richards for a triple. One out later, Joe Strain delivered a single and Clark followed with his round-tripper to cap the inning. The Giants' other run came on a single by Mike Ivie in the eighth.
