Red Sox 10, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bob Watson and Dwight Evans each clouted two homers and Butch Hobson hit one as the Red Sox overpowered the Brewers, 10-1. Watson and Hobson connected in succession in the second inning. Evans homered after Watson was hit by a pitch in the sixth. Watson delivered a two-run smash in the seventh and Evans hit his second homer of the game in the eighth.
Braves 7, Padres 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Backed by a 14-hit attack, Tony Brizzolara pitched his second complete game of the season as the Braves thumped the Padres, 7-2. The Braves broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Gary Matthews and added four runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Joe Nolan, two-run triple by Pepe Frias and run-scoring single by Jerry Royster.
Expos 6, Cubs 4 at Montreal (day game):
Dealing Chicago its sixth straight loss, the Expos downed the Cubs, 6-4. The Expos scored twice in the fifth inning on doubles by Andre Dawson and Larry Parrish, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Dan Schatzeder. They picked up three more tallies in the sixth on an RBI triple by Ellis Valentine, double by Gary Carter and single by Parrish. The Expos' final run came in the eighth on an error by Cub shortstop Ivan DeJesus.
[DH] Phillies 7, Mets 4 (night game) / Mets 2, Phillies 1 at New York (night game):
The Phillies won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-4, but were stopped by the Mets in the nightcap, 2-1. The Phils exploded for four runs in the first inning of the lidlifter. Bake McBride cracked a leadoff double and two outs later scored on a single by Greg Luzinski. After Bob Boone singled, Garry Maddox lined a two-run double and scored on a single by Manny Trillo. Luzinski slammed a two-run homer in the fifth. In the second game, Pete Falcone and Neil Allen combined on a five-hitter for Mets, who snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Doug Flynn lined a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Falcone. Rawly Eastwick replaced starter Kevin Saucier on the mound for the Phils and retired Gil Flores but then yielded a single by Frank Taveras that chased Flynn across the plate with the winning tally. Mike Schmidt had given the Phils a 1-0 lead in the fourth with his 37th homer of the season, but the Mets tied it in the fifth when Taveras walked, stole second and scored on a single by Lee Mazzilli.
Cardinals 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A four-run outburst in the eighth innng lifted the Cardinals to a 5-4 triumph over the Pirates. Trailing, 4-1, the Cards began their winning rally with a one-out single by Ken Reitz, who went to third when Buc second sacker Rennie Stennett booted a grounder off the bat of Jerry Mumphrey. Starter Jim Rooker then was derricked in favor of Grant Jackson, who gave up runs on singles by Mike Tyson and Dane Iorg, a grounder by Garry Templeton and single by Keith Hernandez.
