Brewers 7, Orioles 5 at Baltimore (night game):
Sixto Lezcano, Gorman Thomas and Dick Davis each slugged two-run homers to power the Brewers to a 7-5 decision over the Orioles. Davis' blast came in the eighth inning and snapped a 5-5 tie. Jerry Augustine pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth victory of the season.
Red Sox 12, Indians 3 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox trundled out their heavy artillery and bombed the Indians, 12-3. The cannonading began when Jim Rice bashed a solo homer in the second inning. The Red Sox scored six times in the sixth. Carlton Fisk belted a bases-empty round-tripper to begin the outburst. A double by Fred Lynn, walk to Rice and single by Bob Watson delivered another tally. After Carl Yastrzemski was hit by pitch, Butch Hobson greeted reliever Paul Reuschel with a bases-clearing triple. The final run of the frame scored on an error by Tribe third sacker Toby Harrah. Lynn added a solo homer in the seventh.
[DH] Tigers 3, Rangers 1 (night game) / Tigers 8, Rangers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers clawed the Rangers twice, 3-1 and 8-2. In the lidlifter, Steve Kemp celebrated his 25th birthday by blasting a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lou Whitaker was aboard via a walk on four straight pitches before Kemp connected off Ranger reliever Jim Kern. Jerry Morales paced the second-game triumph with a pair of two-run homers.
White Sox 9, Yankees 5 at New York (night game):
Tapping five pitchers for 15 hits, the White Sox downed the Yankees, 9-5. The score was 3-3 in the sixth inning when Lamar Johnson stroked a leadoff double. Ron Davis then relieved Ken Clay on the mound for the Yanks and Chet Lemon unloaded a two-run homer, putting the White Sox ahead to stay. Rusty Torres added a two-run homer in the ninth off Rich Gossage.
A's 9, Angels 5 at Oakland (night game):
A two-run homer by Dave Revering -- his fifth circuit clout in four games -- highlighted the A's 9-5 triumph over the Angels. Revering's blast off reliever Dave LaRoche capped a six-run, seventh-inning outburst that began with five consecutive singles, the first four off Angel starter Jim Barr. Rob Picciolo drove in three runs for the A's with a bases-loaded single in the second and groundout in the fifth.
Twins 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Getting relief help from Mike Marshall, who earned his 23rd save of the season, Jerry Koosman received credit for his 13th victory as the Twins downed the Mariners, 5-2. John Castino led off the Twins' third inning with a homer and the Twins added three more runs in the fourth, one scoring on a single by Willie Norwood and two on a double by Glenn Borgmann.
Blue Jays 3, Royals 2 at Toronto (night game):
A single by Rick Cerone in the ninth inning drove home the winning run as the Blue Jays prevailed over the Royals, 3-2. With one out Otto Velez drew a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Joe Cannon, who went to second on a single by Rick Bosetti. John Mayberry bounced into a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and third with two out. Dan Quisenberry then relieved starter Paul Splittorff on the hill for the Royals and was greeted by Cerone's game-winning blow.
Cubs 15, Pirates 2 at Chicago (day game):
Three hits apiece by Ivan DeJesus, Jerry Martin and Steve Ontiveros paced a 20-hit attack as the Cubs walloped the Pirates, 15-3. Doubles by DeJesus and Dave Kingman ignited a three-run start in the first inning. The Cubs then broke the game open with five runs after two were out in the third. Martin belted a homer to start the outburst. DeJesus hit his second double of the game to drive in two runs and Bill Buckner batted in another pair with a two-bagger.
Braves 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pushing across a run in the top of the 11th inning, the Braves edged the Reds, 3-2. Thr winning surge developed when Jerry Royster stroked a two-out single. After stealing second, Royster scored on a single by Rowland Office. The Braves had tied the contest in the ninth on a single by Pepe Frias, infield safety by pinch-hitter Mike Lum, error by Red second baseman Joe Morgan and sacrifice fly by Royster.
Dodgers 10, Astros 8 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Steve Yeager, his second round-tripper of the game, highlighted a six-run outburst in the eighth inning and lifted the Dodgers to a 10-8 triumph over the Astros. The Dodgers trailed, 8-4, in the eighth when singles by Bill Russell and Steve Garvey and a walk to Ron Cey loaded the bases and brought on Joe Sambito in relief of Bert Roberge for the Astros. A single by Dusty Baker plated two runs and Yeager followed with his three-run shot. Derrel Thomas then singled, stole second, went to third on an infield hit by pinch-hitter Manny Mota and came home on a grounder by Davey Lopes. Mota's pinch-hit was the 144th of his career, tying him for first place with Smokey Burgess on the all-time major league list. Joe Ferguson also had two homers for the Dodgers.
[DH] Cardinals 9, Mets 2 (night game) / Cardinals 2, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
The Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Mets, 9-2 and 2-1. In the opener, George Hendrick hit a two-run homer for the Cards, Tony Scott drove in two runs with a homer and sacrifice fly and Ken Reitz and Keith Hernandez each hit two-run doubles. Garry Templeton batted the Cards to victory in the nightcap. The shortstop stroked a leadoff single in the fourth inning, stole second, advanced to third on a grounder by Lou Brock and raced home on a groundout by Hernandez. Templeton then bashed a homer in the eighth for the winning run.
Phillies 4, Expos 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Scattering six hits, Larry Christenson pitched the Phillies to a 4-2 triumph over the Expos. Manny Trillo homered for the Phils in the first inning and Garry Maddox in the sixth. The Phillies added the deciding pair in the seventh on singles by Pete Rose and Trillo, a pass to Mike Schmidt, sacrifice fly by Greg Gross batting for Greg Luzinski, and a single by Bob Boone.
Giants 3, Padres 2 at San Francisco (night game):
A two-run homer by Jack Clark highlighted a 3-2 victory by the Giants over the Padres. Clark connected for the circuit in the third inning after Joe Strain was safe on an error by third baseman Paul Dade. The Giants scored their other run in the fifth on a single by Clark, a stolen base throwing error by catcher Fred Kendall, and a single by Mike Ivie.
