Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 7, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Permitting just five singles while notching his first major league shutout, Steve Trout pitched the White Sox to a 7-0 triumph over the Orioles. An RBI double by Wayne Nordhagen gave the Pale Hose a run in the second inning and run-scoring singles by Chet Lemon amd Milt May and doubles by Lamar Johnson, Junior Moore and Kevin Bell produced four more tallies in the fourth.
Red Sox 6, Twins 5 at Boston (night game):
Overcoming a 5-0 early deficit, the Red Sox came back to edge the Twins, 6-5. The score was 5-5 in the eighth inning when the Bosox went ahead on a two-out homer by Butch Hobson. Tom Burgmeier pitched 7 2/3 innings of four-hit shutout relief to get credit for the victory. The Sox had tied the game with a four-run outburst in the seventh stanza, the key blows being a two-run single by Rick Burleson and two-run homer by Fred Lynn.
Tigers 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
A four-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the Tigers to a 5-3 decision over the Angels. Nolan Ryan, making his first start for the Angels after being out of action 19 days with arm problems, shut out the Tigers for five innings. But in the sixth frame, consecutive singles by Jason Thompson, Champ Summers and Jerry Morales loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by Lance Parrish plated one run and after Tom Brookens was hit by a pitch to reload the sacks, Ryan was removed in favor of Mark Clear. Lou Whitaker then drove in three runs with a double off the base of the left-center field wall.
Brewers 5, Royals 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
A pinch-homer by Ben Oglivie with two out in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Brewers to a 5-4 triumph over the Royals, snapping the Royals' five-game winning skein. The Royals had tied the score at 4-4 in the top of frame on a homer by Amos Otis. Jim Slaton went the route for the 10th time this season and recorded his 12th victory.
Yankees 3, Rangers 2 at New York (night game):
The Yankees defeated the Rangers, 3-2, as Oscar Gamble hit a homer and drove in the winning run with an eighth-inning single. The score was 2-2 in the eighth when Willie Randolph began the winning surge with a two-out single and stole second. Gamble then hit a liner to right-center and Randolph scored. Gamble's round-tripper came in the third inning.
Blue Jays 4, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Butch Edge, getting relief help from Tom Buskey, got credit for a victory in his major league debut as the Blue Jays prevailed over the A's, 4-2. The Jays scored in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded grounder by Tim Johnson and added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Johnson and squeeze bunt by Rick Cerone. The final Jay tally came in the eighth on a triple by Tony Solaita and single by Joe Cannon.
Indians 6, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
Allowing only one runner to reach second base, Rick Wise tossed a five-hitter as the Indians downed the Mariners, 6-0. The Tribe's initial run came in the first inning on walks to Bobby Bonds and Andre Thornton and an RBI single by Cliff Johnson. Mike Hargrove blasted a two-run homer in the second and Bonds connected for a solo round-tripper in the third.
Astros 4, Expos 1 at Houston (night game):
Posting his fifth straight victory, J.R. Richard hurled the Astros to a 4-1 triumph over the Expos. The Astros scored twice in the fourth inning on a single by Terry Puhl, an infield out, single by Jeff Leonard and double by Art Howe. They added another pair in the fifth with a walk, an error, a single by Puhl and sacrifice fly by Jose Cruz. Richard retired 11 straight batters at one stage of the game.
Pirates 9, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Combining on a four-hitter, Jim Bibby and Kent Tekulve pitched the Pirates to a 9-1 triumph over the sagging Phillies. It was Bibby's sixth straight victory. Omar Moreno led off the game with a homer and the Bucs scored another run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by John Milner. Milner connected for a three-run homer in the third frame and Bill Madlock blasted a three-run triple in the ninth.
Cardinals 3, Cubs 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Lou Brock became the 14th player in baseball history and second Cardinal to get 3,000 hits when he cracked singles in two trips to the plate in a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. The veteran left fielder sliced a single to left in the first inning and rammed a line drive off Cub pitcher Dennis Lamp's hand in the fourth frame. Lamp sustained a bruised hand and was forced to leave the game. The Redbirds won the contest in the ninth when a one-out single by Ken Reitz, a hit batsman and a pinch-single by Dane Iorg loaded the bases before Garry Templeton delivered a sacrifice fly to score Tom Herr, pinch-runner for Reitz, with the winning tally.
