Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 4, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Tossing a four-hitter, Paul Splittorff pitched the Royals to a 4-2 triumph over the Orioles. The Royals took the lead in the first inning when Willie Wilson struck out but reached first on a passed ball, stole second and scored on a single by George Brett. In the second, after a sacrifice fly by Todd Cruz, the Royals scored another run when Orioles' starter Dennis Martinez balked as Frank White headed for home on an attempted two-out steal. The Royals' final run came in the sixth on a homer by Cruz.

Red Sox 7, White Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Driving in four runs with a homer and single, Bob Watson led the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the White Sox. The Red Sox trailed, 4-1, in the fourth inning, when Fred Lynn cracked a leadoff homer, Carl Yastrzemski singled and Watson followed with his round-tripper. In the fifth frame, the Red Sox loaded the bases on singles by Carlton Fisk and Lynn and a walk to Jim Rice before Watson delivered a two-run single.

Brewers 4, Rangers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Three runs in the first inning triggered the Brewers to a 4-1 decision over the Rangers. After the Rangers scored on singles by Bump Wills and Buddy Bell around a walk, the Brewers immediately countered. Don Money walked, Cecil Cooper doubled and both counted on a double by Gorman Thomas, who scored the third run of the inning on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly by Paul Molitor drove home the final Brewer run in the sixth.

Twins 5, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Ending a three-game losing streak, the Twins downed the Yankees, 5-1, as Geoff Zahn and Mike Marshall combined on a five-hitter. The Twins went ahead with two runs in the sixth inning. Rob Wilfong doubled and scored on a single by Ken Landreaux. After a double by Glenn Adams and walk to Butch Wynegar loaded the bases, Landreaux scored on an infield out by Hosken Powell. The Twins added their other runs in the eighth on a single by Wynegar, a walk and doubles by Ron Jackson and John Castino. Fred Stanley hit a homer, only the seventh of his seven-year major league career, for the Yankees' run.

Mets 6, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A five-run eruption in the eighth inning lifted the Mets to a 6-3 triumph over the Braves. With the score tied, 1-1, the Mets opened the eighth with a double by Doug Flynn, but the threat seemed stilled when pinch-hitter Gil Flores bunted and Flynn was thrown out at third. However, Frank Taveras followed with a safe bunt and Alex Trevino singled to drive in Flores. Taveras also scored on a wild throw by Braves' outfielder Barry Bonnell. Lee Mazzilli walked and on a bunt by John Stearns, Trevino beat the throw to the plate. Joel Youngblood then doubled, driving in Mazzilli and Stearns.

Cubs 14, Giants 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs piled up 17 hits, 11 for extra bases, and thrashed the Giants, 14-4. A double by Dave Kingman, triple by Steve Ontiveros and double by Jerry Martin produced two runs in the second inning and third-inning doubles by Ivan DeJesus and Bill Buckner added another tally. Martin connected for a solo homer in the sixth. The first nine batters in the seventh reached base safely as the Cubs plated eight runs in an explosion highlighted by a two-run single by Kingman and two-run double by Barry Foote.

Pirates 5, Padres 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Racing to their sixth straight victory, the Pirates edged the Padres, 5-4. Gene Tenace hit a two-run homer for the Padres in the first inning, but the Pirates picked up an unearned run in their half and went ahead with three in the fourth. After singles by Willie Stargell, Bill Madlock and Ed Ott produced one tally, Phil Garner walked to load the bases and Omar Moreno drove in two runs with a single. The Pirates added what proved to be their winning marker in the fifth when Dave Parker singled, stole second and scored on a single by John Milner.

Dodgers 4, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Dodgers outlasted the Cardinals in a 15-inning marathon, 4-2. In the final frame, Derrel Thomas singled with one out and Davey Lopes drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a groundout by Bill Russell and scored on a single by Steve Garvey.
