Royals 11, Orioles 7 at Baltimore (day game):
Erupting for four runs in the 10th inning, the Royals took an 11-7 decision over the Orioles. John Wathan walked and Amos Otis sacrificed to start the Royals' uprising. Clint Hurdle also walked and, after a second out, pinch-hitter Jamie Quirk drew a pass to load the bases. Willie Wilson cleared the sacks with a triple and scored himself on a single by Al Cowens.
White Sox 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
The White Sox eked out a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. With the score tied, 2-2, in the eighth, the White Sox loaded the bases on singles by Ralph Garr and Mike Squires and a fielder's choice on which Jorge Orta was safe. Garr then came home as Lamar Johnson grounded into an infield out. Although driving in the winning run, Johnson was stopped on his 19-game batting streak. Fred Lynn of the Red Sox also was collared on his 20-game string.
Angels 4, Blue Jays 2 at California (day game):
Bobby Grich hit a homer and two singles, driving in three runs, to pace the Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Grich's round-tripper in the fourth inning gave the Angels a 2-0 lead. After the Blue Jays came back to tie the score, Grich broke the deadlock with a run-scoring single in the sixth. Don Aase, making the first relief appearance of his career, shut out the Jays over the last 3 2/3 innings and gained credit for the victory.
Brewers 4, Rangers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
A two-run homer by Ben Oglivie in the ninth inning gave the Brewers a 4-3 triumph over the Rangers. The Brewers were behind, 3-2, when Gorman Thomas drew a one-out walk in the ninth. After Ranger starter Doc Medich was relieved by Sparky Lyle, Oglivie worked the count to 3-1 and then hit his 24th round-tripper of the season.
Yankees 4, Twins 3 at New York (day game):
Lou Piniella drove home the winning run with a single in the seventh inning as the Yankees edged the Twins, 4-3. Pinch-hitter Lenny Randle opened the Yanks' seventh with a single but was forced at second on Fred Stanley's sacrifice attempt. One out later, Stanley moved to third on a single by Bobby Murcer and scored on Piniella's hit. Ron Guidry, with relief help from Rich Gossage, posted his sixth consecutive victory.
A's 3, Indians 2 at Oakland (day game):
Scattering six hits, Mike Norris pitched the A's to their fourth consecutive victory, beating the Indians, 3-2. The A's scored all their runs in the second inning. Rob Picciolo drove in a run with a single and Rickey Henderson added the deciding markers with a double.
Mariners 8, Tigers 4 at Seattle (night game):
Homers by Leon Roberts and Willie Horton highlighted the Mariners' 8-4 triumph over the Tigers. The Mariners scored three times in the first inning on doubles by Ruppert Jones and Tom Paciorek and a round-tripper by Roberts. Horton led off the Seattle third with his 21st circuit clout. The Mariners combined three singles, two walks and two Tiger errors for four more runs in the fifth.
Cubs 3, Padres 1 at Chicago (day game):
Rick Reuschel pitched three-hit ball for eight innings and Bruce Sutter recorded his 31st save of the season as the Cubs topped the Padres, 3-1. The Cubs' first run came in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bill Buckner before Barry Foote provided the winning margin with a homer in the seventh following a walk to Jerry Martin.
Reds 6, Mets 5 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pushing across a run in the eighth inning, the Reds edged the Mets, 6-5. Ray Knight led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave Collins.
Phillies 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
A triple by Garry Maddox keyed a two-run rally in the ninth inning that carried the Phillies to a 3-2 triumph over the Astros and a sweep of the three-game series. Trailing, 2-1, the Phillies tied the game on a single by Bob Boone and triple by Maddox that scored pinch-runner Bud Harrelson. Maddox then scored on a single by Larry Bowa to give the victory to Steve Carlton, who pitched a two-hitter.
Expos 5, Braves 1 at Montreal (day game):
Gary Carter and Stan Bahnsen each hit two-run homers to lead the Expos to a 5-1 victory over the Braves. Carter's blow came in the first inning after Andre Dawson doubled home Rodney Scott, aboard via a single. Bahnsen connected for his first major league homer in the seventh after a single by Ellis Valentine.
Pirates 2, Dodgers 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A two-out, two-run homer by Bill Madlock in the ninth inning lifted the Pirates to a 2-0 triumph over the Dodgers. John Milner doubled with one away and, one out later, Madlock cracked his round tripper. John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve combined on a four-hitter, ending the Dodgers' five-game winning streak.
Cardinals 4, Giants 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Handing the Giants their fifth straight loss, the Cardinals posted a 4-0 victory. George Hendrick hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and connected for the circuit again in the eighth following a single by Keith Hernandez. John Denny and Mark Littell combined for the second St. Louis shutout over the Giants in the three-game series sweep.
