Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Rangers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
With Mike Flanagan applying the calcimine brush for the fifth time this season, the Orioles corraled the Rangers, 3-0. Ken Singleton drove in all the Birds' runs, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning and RBI double in the third.

Angels 6, Indians 5 at California (night game):
The Angels outlasted the Indians, 6-5, in a see-saw battle. After the Angels rallied for five runs in the seventh to assume a 5-3 lead, the Tribe tied the count in the top of the eighth on a pair of bases-loaded walks. But rookie Tom Donohue drilled a tie-breaking homer in the bottom of the frame to produce the winning margin for the Californians.

Yankees 17, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Yankees smote the Royals hip and thigh, pounding out a 17-4 slaughter. Jim Spencer blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and two-run shot in the eighth. Bobby Murcer knocked in four runs with a three-run round-tripper and a bases-loaded walk as every Yankee starter hit safely at least once. The game was so one-sided that K.C. pilot Whitey Herzog, not wanting to waste relief pitchers, used utility infielder Jerry Terrell to hurl the ninth inning. Terrell retired the side on three pitches.

Brewers 5, White Sox 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Enjoying the generosity of four walks and four Chicago errors, the Brewers wrung out the White Sox, 5-3. The first Brewer run came across in the second inning on a single by Dick Davis, scoring Gorman Thomas who had walked. In the third frame, a walk to Yount, an errant pickoff attempt, sacrifice bunt and single by Cecil Cooper produced another tally. The Brewers got three more in the sixth on a walk to Ben Oglivie, RBI doubles by Sal Bando and Davis and an error by Sox shortstop Harry Chappas.

Twins 10, Red Sox 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Driving in six runs with a homer, triple and double, Ken Landreaux led the Twins to a 10-5 thumping of the Red Sox as Roger Erickson recorded his first victory of the season. Landreaux doubled home a first-inning run, drilled a three-run homer in the sixth and added a two-run triple in the eighth.

Tigers 7, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
A five-run explosion in the eighth inning enabled the Tigers to post a 7-3 victory over the A's. The Tigers trailed, 2-1, entering the eighth, but tied the score on a bases-loaded single by Jose Morales. Jason Thompson then cleared the sacks with a double and scored himself on a two-bagger by Lynn Jones.

Mariners 7, Blue Jays 4 at Seattle (night game):
A five-run fifth inning capped by a three-run homer by Willie Horton enabled the Mariners to keelhaul the Blue Jays, 7-4. Horton's blast, his 22nd of the season, followed singles by Ruppert Jones and Bruce Bochte and gave the victory to Mike Parrott, who turned in his eighth complete game of the campaign.

Cubs 2, Dodgers 1 at Chicago (day game):
Registering their sixth straight victory, the Cubs edged the Dodgers, 2-1. Barry Foote clouted a solo homer in the second inning for the first run and the Cubs picked up another in the fifth when Lynn McGlothen doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a sacrifice fly by Scot Thompson. McGlothen picked up his third straight victory and Sutter logged his 32nd save.

Expos 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Two homers by Larry Parrish and one by Tony Perez powered the Expos to a 5-2 triumph over the Reds. An RBI single by Perez and sacrifice fly by Gary Carter gave the Expos a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Parrish connected for a solo round-tripper in the second and Perez added a bases-empty shot in the third. Parrish finished the Montreal scoring with a solo shot in the fourth frame. Johnny Bench tied Frank Robinson for the all-time Reds' homer lead with 324.

Astros 8, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Firing a two-hitter, Joe Niekro became the league's first 17-game winner and the Astros snapped their four-game losing streak with an 8-1 victory over the Mets. The Astros scored three times in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jeff Leonard and two-run hit by Rafael Landestoy. A triple by Leonard and sacrifice fly by Alan Ashby produced another marker in the sixth stanza and the Astros plated a tally in the seventh on a balk by Met pitcher Craig Swan.

Braves 5, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run outburst in the ninth inning lifted the Braves to a 5-2 triumph over the Phillies. With the score tied, 2-2, Rowland Office led off the Atlanta ninth with a single and Pepe Frias beat out a bunt. On a sacrifice by Bruce Benedict, Phillie first baseman Pete Rose threw too late to third on a force attempt and the bases were loaded. One out later, a sacrifice fly by Jerry Royster scored Office. After a walk to Gary Matthews, a single by Jeff Burroughs produced two more runs.

Pirates 6, Giants 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
After waiting for three hours, 42 minutes with a rain delay in the sixth inning, the Pirates finally edged the Giants, 6-5, on a bases-loaded passed ball by San Francisco catcher Mike Sadek. It was the sixth successive setback for the Giants. The score was 5-5 when Willie Stargell led off the Bucs' eighth with a single. Pinch-runner Alberto Lois advanced to second on an infield out and to third on walks to Bill Madlock and Phil Garner. A 2-2 pitch by Gary Lavelle to pinch-hitter Lee Lacy eluded the Frisco catcher with Lois racing across the plate.

Cardinals 6, Padres 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Ken Oberkfell had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice to pace the Cardinals to a 6-3 decision over the Padres. Oberkfell doubled to lead off the sixth inning and Keith Hernandez and Bernie Carbo followed with singles. A sacrifice fly by Tony Scott drove in Hernandez. Mike Phillips led off the Redbird seventh with a double and reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Lou Brock walked and stole second and both Phillips and Brock scored on a single by Oberkfell, who eventually came home on a hit by Carbo.
