Today's scores and summaries:
Rangers 2, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Solo homers by Buddy Bell and Richie Zisk provided the winning margin for the Rangers in a 2-1 victory over the Orioles. Jim Kern garnered his 21st save of the season in relief of Steve Comer, striking out Doug DeCinces with two on and two out in the eighth. The Orioles' lone run scored in the fourth when Eddie Murray walked, stole second and scored on a single by DeCinces.
Indians 12, Angels 7 at California (night game):
The Indians went on the warpath against the Angels, pounding out 15 hits in a 12-7 scalping. The Indians tallied five times in the fifth inning, helped by an error by Angel second baseman Bobby Grich. Rick Manning delivered one run with a single, a sacrifice fly by Bobby Bonds plated another and Cliff Johnson climaxed the uprising with a three-run homer. The Indians posted three more markers in the seventh on walks to Bonds and Toby Harrah, single by Johnson, a wild pitch, sacrifice fly by Andre Thornton and single by Ron Hassey.
Yankees 6, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, the Yankees scored five runs after two were out in the ninth inning to top the Royals, 6-2. The Yanks trailed, 2-1, but filled the bases in the ninth on a single sandwiched by two hit batsmen. With two out, Roy White singled home a pair of runs and Fred Stanley followed with a three-run homer.
[DH] Brewers 3, White Sox 2 (night game) / Brewers 9, White Sox 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers swept a doubleheader from the White Sox, 3-2 and 9-5. The Brewers scored two runs in the second inning of the lidlifter on a walk, single by Dick Davis, infield out by Jim Gantner and single by Buck Martinez. They added another in the sixth when a single by Martinez drove in Sixto Lezcano, who had walked. In the nightcap, a two-run homer by Lezcano in the fourth inning broke a 2-2 tie and doubles by Ben Oglivie and Lezcano in the sixth stanza boosted the Brewer lead to 5-2. Paul Molitor, who drove in three runs, hit a sacrifice fly in the third and singled in each of his next three at-bats.
Twins 7, Red Sox 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Notching his 16th victory, Jerry Koosman pitched the Twins to a 7-2 decision over the Red Sox. A double by Ron Jackson staked the Twins to a 2-1 lead in the third inning and the Twins scored twice more in the fifth on consecutive singles by Roy Smalley, Jackson and Jose Morales and a grounder by Hosken Powell. Smalley drilled a two-run homer in the sixth. Koosman was aided by four double plays.
A's 8, Tigers 1 at Oakland (night game):
Brian Kingman pitched a three-hitter as the A's breezed to an 8-1 victory over the Tigers. After a two-out single by Dave Revering in the first inning produced a 1-0 lead, the A's clinched the outcome in the second with a two-run triple by Dwayne Murphy and single by Jim Essian. Rob Picciolo singled home another tally in the third and Jeff Newman cracked a three-run homer in the fourth.
Mariners 8, Blue Jays 4 at Seattle (night game):
Tom Paciorek drove in six runs -- three with a homer and three more with a triple -- to spark the Mariners to an 8-4 decision over the Blue Jays. Paclorek's homer sent the Mariners ahead, 4-3, in the fifth inning. After Ruppert Jones drove in a run with a single in the sixth, Paciorek came up with the bases loaded and hit his triple.
Dodgers 4, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Ron Cey hit a three-run homer and Dusty Baker followed with a solo swat in a third-inning outburst that powered the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory, ending the Cubs' six-game winning streak. Cey's round-tripper came after Bill Russell reached base on an error by shortstop Ivan DeJesus and Steve Garvey was hit by a pitch. Baker then added his shot.
Reds 3, Expos 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver, getting relief help from Tom Hume, picked up his 10th consecutive victory as the Reds eked out a 3-2 decision over the Expos. The score was 2-2 when Dan Driessen led off the Reds' seventh inning with a single, stole second, went to third on an infield out and, one out later, scored the winning run on a single by pinch-hitter Hector Cruz.
Mets 5, Astros 0 at New York (night game):
League President Chub Feeney upheld a ninth-inning protest by the Astros, making the Mets wait until the following afternoon for their 5-0 victory. Pete Falcone had tossed a four-hitter before the final-out protest by the Astros. A confusing incident caused the Astros' Jeff Leonard to bat three times. Leonard flied out for what appeared to be the final out of the game, but third base umpire Doug Harvey ruled that time had been called before the pitch and Leonard came to bat again. He singled on the next pitch, but Met first baseman Ed Kranepool, who had run into the locker room, had not returned to the field before Leonard's swing and plate umpire Frank Pulli nullified the hit since major league rules forbid a team from playing with less than nine men on the field. After Leonard batted for the third time and flied to left, the Astros filed the protest which was upheld the following morning. Falcone was deprived of a shutout and complete game when the Mets called on Kevin Kobel to get Jose Cruz for the final out with Leonard aboard with his single.
Braves 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A seventh-inning homer by Gary Matthews snapped a 4-4 tie and enabled the Braves to edge the Phillies, 5-4. The Braves led, 4-1, until the Phillies tied the score in the sixth with a single by Mike Schmidt, double by Greg Luzinski, triple by Dave Rader and single by Manny Trillo. Larry Bradford, in relief of Rick Matula, pitched to only one batter and got credit for his first major league victory. Gene Garber recorded his 21st save.
Giants 6, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A three-run homer by Jack Clark broke a tie in the sixth inning and carried the Giants to a 6-1 triumph over the Pirates. Dennis Littlejohn connected for a two-run round-tripper in the ninth, his first major league homer. Bob Knepper singled, stopped at third on a double by Bill North and scored to knot the count at 1-1 when Pirate third baseman Bill Madlock booted a grounder by Joe Strain. On Bruce Kison's next pitch, Clark clouted his homer.
Padres 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Padres downed the Cardinals, 3-2, in 11 innings. The Padres tied the contest in the ninth on a leadoff single by Ozzie Smith off reliever Mark Littell, a sacrifice and a single by Dave Winfield. Pinch-hitter Paul Dale opened the Padres' 11th with a double, reached third safely when Redbird reliever Will McEnaney threw late to third base on Smith's sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Kurt Bevacqua.
