Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 13, Angels 3 at California (day game):
Driving Nolan Ryan to cover in 3 1/3 innings, the Indians routed the Angels, 13-3. Ryan surrendered five hits and six walks. Rick Manning, Mike Hargrove, Bobby Bonds and Toby Harrah rapped three hits apiece to pace the Indians' attack, while Dan Spiliner scattered five hits to record his eighth victory of the season.

Royals 3, Yankees 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Checking the Yankees on five hits, Larry Gura pitched the Royals to a 3-1 victory. The Royals scored in the first inning when Amos Otis, aboard via a fielder's choice, stole second and came home on a single by George Brett. A double by Willie Wilson added a run in the fourth and a sacrifice fly by George Brett closed out the Royals' scoring in the seventh.

White Sox 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
After dissipating a 3-0 early lead, the White Sox came back with a run in the eighth inning to prevail over the Brewers, 4-3. With the score tied, Lamar Johnson drilled a double and scored on a single by Chet Lemon. Reliever Ed Farmer pitched one-hit ball over the final four innings to pick up the victory.

Red Sox 9, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
In a game called after eight innings because of rain, the Red Sox defeated the Twins, 9-4. The Red Sox scored three runs in the first inning on singles by Rick Burleson and Jim Rice and a two-run error by second baseman Rob Wilfong. Two runs followed in the seventh on a double by Burleson, single by Ted Sizemore and double by Fred Lynn. The closing four runs in the eighth were produced by an RBI single by Butch Hobson, double by Dwight Evans, sacrifice fly by Gary Allenson and a wild pitch.

Tigers 3, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
A two-run homer by Alan Trammell in the first inning triggered the Tigers to a 3-1 triumph over the A's. Trammell's circuit clout followed a single by Ron LeFlore. The Tigers added an insurance marker in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales.

Mariners 6, Blue Jays 3 at Seattle (night game):
Winning their fourth straight game, the Mariners defeated the Blue Jays, 6-3. The Mariners took the lead for keeps in the fourth inning with a three-run uprising on a double by Dan Meyer, single by Joe Simpson and homer by Larry Cox. Rupper tJones unloaded a two-run circuit clout in the seventh.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Joe Ferguson and Ron Cey batted in five runs between them and led the Dodgers to a 7-2 victory over the Cubs. Ferguson broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning with a solo homer. Cey tripled with the bases loaded in the seventh and crossed the plate himself on a single by Ferguson.

Reds 7, Expos 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Homers by George Foster and Johnny Bench powered the Reds to a 7-2 thumping of the Expos. Foster clouted a two-run shot in the first inning and Bench connected for a three-run swat after singles by Dave Collins and Joe Morgan in the fourth. Bench's round-tripper was the 325th of his career and made him the Reds' all-time homer king, passing Frank Robinson's total with the club.

Astros 3, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
After the Mets completed their 5-0 victory by getting the final out of the protested game of the previous night, the Astros posted a 3-1 triumph in the regularly-scheduled contest. Jeff Leonard, the key figure in the confusing situation the previous night, stroked a two-run single in the ninth inning after Jose Cruz had homered for the Astros first run in the second. J.R. Richard scattered seven hits in posting his 14th complete game of the season. The righthander struck out 10 to increase his major league-leading total to 232.

Braves 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Braves edged the Phillies, 4-3. The Braves scored a run in the first inning when Jerry Royster doubled, took third on an error by left fielder Greg Luzinski and scored on a groundout by Gary Matthews. They added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Dale Murphy and picked up two more tallies in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Eddie Solomon and Matthews.

Pirates 8, Giants 6 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A pair of two-run singles by Tim Foli paced the Pirates to an 8-6 verdict over the Giants. The score was 6-6 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Ed Ott and Bill Robinson walked and advanced a base on an infield out by Omar Moreno. Foli then drove both runners home with a single. The Buc shortstop previously capped a four-run outburst in the second with his first single.

Cardinals 8, Padres 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Aided by misplays, the Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-5 victory over the Padres. Garry Templeton singled to start the Cards' first and stole second before Lou Brock walked. A double by Keith Hernandez plated Templeton, and Brock and Hernandez both came home when Padre third baseman Kurt Bevacqua missed catcher Bill Fahey's pickoff attempt. Ted Simmons then connected for a solo homer. The scoring continued when Scott singled, took second on a throwing error by first baseman Jay Johnstone, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on a double by Ken Reitz.
