Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 5, A's 3 at Cleveland (night game):
A three-run homer by Bobby Bonds paced the Indians to a 5-3 victory over the A's. After spotting the A's a one-run lead on a double by Jeff Newman in the second inning, the Indians came back with four in their half. A double by Duane Kuiper and passes to Dave Rosello and Mike Hargrove loaded the bases. Rick Manning hit a sacrifice fly for one run and Bonds followed with his homer. Toby Harrah ended the Indians' scoring with a circuit clout in the eighth.

Mariners 8, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
Willie Horton hit two homers, including the ninth grand slam of his career, to lead the Mariners to an 8-4 victory over the Tigers. The Mariners also had homers by Dan Meyer and Larry Milbourne, while all of the Tigers' tallies came on round-trippers. Jason Thompson hit one and Champ Summers rapped two, his second blow coming with a man on base in the ninth inning.

Royals 1, Red Sox 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Dennis Leonard pitched a four-hitter and Willie Wilson raced out his fourth inside-the-park homer of the year to lift the Royals to a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox. Wilson, leading off in the first inning against Mike Torrez, lashed a drive down the left field line and circled bases when the ball got past Jim Rice. Wilson, the Royals' left fielder, also turned in the defensive play of the game. After Carl Yastrzemski doubled in the fifth inning for the 2,989th hit of his career, Dwight Evans singled to left. Yastrzemski tried to score and was gunned down on a throw by Wilson.

Twins 4, Yankees 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A four-run rally in the eighth inning, capped when Rob Wilfong homered with a man on base, brought the Twins a 4-1 victory over the Yankees. Jerry Koosman won his sixth straight game. Mike Marshall pitched the ninth inning and picked up his 26th save. The Yankees' run in the third was unearned. Brada Gulden singled and scored from first base when Koosman threw wildly after fielding a grounder by Willie Randolph. The Twins had collected only four hits off Luis Tiant going into the eighth when Bombo Rivera walked and pinch-hitter Mike Cubbage tripled to tie the score. Butch Wynegar singled, driving in pinch-runner Willie Norwood, and Wilfong followed with his homer to clinch the decision.

Brewers 5, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Getting two-homer support, Mike Caldwell pitched the Brewers to a 5-2 victory over the Rangers. Cecil Cooper homered with a man on base in the third inning and, after two out, Ben Oglivie also hit for the circuit.

Angels 24, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
In a slugging display, Don Baylor broke the Angels' club record for most RBIs in one season and tied the mark for most in one game by driving in eight runs in a 24-2 walloping of the Blue Jays. The Angels broke their club records for most runs in a game and for most hits with 26. Baylor hit a grand slam in the first inning, knocked in a run with a double inthe third and homered with two men on base in the sixth to boost his RBI total to 118, three more than Bobby Bonds' previous club record in 1977. Two previous Angels, Leon Wagner and Lee Thomas, each batted in eight runs in separate games in 1961. Bobby Grich, Dan Ford and Bobby Clark joined in the Angels' slugging, each hitting a two-run homer. After the Angels mauled three regular pitchers, first baseman Craig Kusick took the mound for the Blue Jays and worked the last 3 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and two runs.

Cardinals 5, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Ken Reitz in the eighth inning produced the Cardinals' winning run in a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. Steve Garvey, Joe Ferguson and Gary Thomasson homered for the Dodgers. Garvey also drove in a run with a single. The Cardinals, who were trailing, 4-1, rallied for two runs in the sixth on singles by Lou Brock, Keith Hernandez and Ted Simmons, plus a double-play grounder by George Hendrick. In the eighth, Hernandez, Hendrick and Tony Scott hit singles to tie the score and Reitz followed with his sacrifice fly.

Reds 8, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
Exploding for five runs in the ninth inning, the Reds defeated the Mets, 8-4, After Dave Concepcion batted in two runs, Johnny Bench homered in the fourth inning to put the Reds ahead, 3-2, but Joel Youngblood smashed a two-run drive for a 4-3 Mets' lead in the eighth. George Foster ignited the Reds' outburst in the ninth with a homer that tied the score. Bench doubled and, after an intentional pass to Dan Driessen, Ray Knight sacrificed. Another intentional pass to pinch-hitter Harry Spilman loaded the bases. Hector Cruz, also pinch-hitting, laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Bench. Dave Collins singled, driving in two runs, and the final run of the frame followed on an infield out by Concepcion.

Astros 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Joe Niekro, who pitched the first 5 2/3 innings before rain forced a delay of almost 2½ hours, gained his 18th victory when the Astros defeated the Phillies, 3-1. When play resumed after the rain, Joe Sambito replaced Niekro and went the rest of the way to earn his 16th save. The Phillies counted their lone run in the second on a pass to Bob Boone and a double by Nino Espinosa. Jose Cruz tied the score with a homer in the fourth. Doubles by Alan Ashby and Niekro sent the Astros ahead in the fifth and their final run came in the sixth on a triple by Craig Reynolds and single by Terry Puhl.

Pirates 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Deciding the longest game in the major leagues this season, Bill Robinson doubled in the 19th inning and scored on a single by Tim Foli to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Padres in a contest that lasted six hours, 12 minutes. The Padres left 26 men on base, the major league record for 19 innings and one shy of the all-time mark of 27 stranded by the Braves against the Phillies in a 20-inning game May 4. 1973. The Padres held a 2-0 lead going into the ninth when the Pirates rallied to tie the score. Dave Parker doubled, John Milner walked and Bill Madlock singled for one run. Rollie Fingers relieved Gaylord Perry and, after a walk to Ed Ott, Milner scored on a passed ball by Bill Fahey to send the game into overtime. The Pirates took the lead in the 12th with a double by Phil Garner and single by Omar Moreno, but the Padres forced continuation of play with a matching tally on a single by Fahey, pass to Dave Winfield, force of Fahey by Fred Kendall and single by Dan Briggs.

Giants 5, Cubs 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Batting with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning, Mike Ivie cleared the sacks with a double to bring the Giants a 5-2 victory over the Cubs. Barry Foote and Ken Henderson homered for the Cubs' counters. Willie McCovey accounted for the Giants' first run with a circuit clout in the fourth and Jack Clark stole home to tie the score at 2-2 in the sixth. Larry Herndon doubled with one out in the seventh and stopped at third on a single by Joe Strain, who took second on the throw home. Willie Hernandez, replacing Lynn McGlothen, passed Clark intentionally and struck out McCovey before yielding the mound to Dick Tidrow. Ivie worked the count to 3-2 and then lashed his double.
