[DH] Orioles 12, White Sox 7 (day game) / Orioles 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
Continuing to set a hot pace in the East division, the Orioles swept a doubleheader from the White Sox, 12-7 and 4-3, with the second game going 13 innings. In the opener, Mike Flanagan became the league's first 18-game winner. Doug DeCinces drilled his third career grand-slam homer in the first inning and Ken Singleton connected for a three-run blast in the second. The second game was 3-3 when Gary Roenicke belted a homer in the 13th inning.
Indians 7, A's 5 at Cleveland (day game):
Erupting for three runs in the sixth inning, the Indians scalped the A's, 7-5. The score was 4-4 when Andre Thornton led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice by Gary Alexander and scored on a double by Dave Rosello, who later came home on an infield hit by Rick Manning. A double by Bobby Bonds capped the rally. Wayne Garland, making his first appearance since reinjuring his shoulder June 25, pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get credit for the victory.
[DH] Tigers 4, Mariners 3 (day game) / Tigers 9, Mariners 8 at Detroit (day game):
Three homers by Steve Kemp and one by Champ Summers powered the Tigers to a pair of victories over the Mariners, 4-3 in the 10-inning first game and 9-8 in the second contest. Kemp connected for his second homer of the opener leading off the 10th inning to break a 3-3 deadlock. In the nightcap, Kemp tied the score at 8-8 with a two-run circuit clout in the seventh and Summers won the game one inning later with a pinch-homer.
Royals 6, Red Sox 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Willie Wilson slammed four hits, scored twice, stole two bases and drove in one run to pace the Royals to a 6-3 victory over the Red Sox. Wilson singled and scored on a groundout in the third inning, stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth and tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae in the sixth.
Brewers 6, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Two-run homers by Gorman Thomas and Cecil Cooper and the eight-hit pitching of Bill Travers carried the Brewers to a 6-2 triumph over the Rangers. Thomas connected in the first inning after a single by Sal Bando. Cooper drilled his round-tripper in the fifth after another single by Bando. Buddy Bell homered for the Rangers' runs.
Blue Jays 9, Angels 3 at Toronto (day game):
John Mayberry belted two homers and Rick Cerone drove in five runs as the Blue Jays flew to a 9-3 victory over the Angels. The Jays scored three times in the second inning on a solo shot by Mayberry, double by Rick Bosetti, walk to Al Woods and two-run double by Cerone. Mayberry drilled another round-tripper in the fifth and Cerone blasted a two-run shot in the sixth. Cerone got credit for his fifth RBI in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk.
Dodgers 4, Cardinals 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Homers by Joe Ferguson and Steve Garvey powered the Dodgers to a 4-1 decision over the Cardinals. The score was 1-1 when Ferguson connected for a leadoff circuit clout in the fourth inning. Garvey drilled a solo blast in the fifth. The final tally came in the seventh on singles by Mickey Hatcher and Davey Lopes around a stolen base. Rick Sutcliffe gained his 12th victory, tying the Dodger record for a rookie pitcher. Bobby Castillo, in relief, loaded the bases with none out in the ninth, but fanned pinch-hitter Dane Iorg and Garry Templeton and retired Lou Brock on a fly.
Reds 8, Mets 0 at New York (day game):
Notching his 11th straight victory and 51st career shutout, Tom Seaver pitched the Reds to an 8-0 triumph over the Mets. The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when the Reds tallied twice on a double by Hector Cruz and singles by Dave Collins and Joe Morgan. Seaver doubled home two markers in the eighth and Cruz hit a two-run single in the ninth when the Reds finished their scoring.
Astros 4, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Breaking a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth inning, the Astros posted a 4-1 triumph over the Phillies. Cesar Cedeno, who had five hits in the game, led off the decisive stanza with a triple and scored on a single by Craig Reynolds. Terry Puhl bunted and Reynolds came all the way home when Manny Trillo, covering first, could not handle pitcher Kevin Saucier's throw. A single by Joe Sambito in the ninth plated the Astros' final tally.
Pirates 9, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
Bruce Kison hit the first grand-slam homer of his career and Bill Madlock collected four hits, including a two-run homer, to pace the Pirates to a 9-2 thumping of the Padres. Kison's clout climaxed a five-run outburst in the second inning and came after singles by Lee Lacy, Madlock, Rennie Stennett and Steve Nicosia. Madlock hit his round-tripper in the third.
Cubs 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
A combined six-hitter by Dennis Lamp and Bruce Sutter carried the Cubs to a 4-1 decision over the Giants. The Cubs went ahead in the first inning on a two-out infield hit by Bill Buckner, a wild pitch and a single by Steve Ontiveros. After singles by Scot Thompson and Buckner, Larry Biittner hit a sacrifice fly in the third. The Cubs picked up two more markers in the eighth on a single by Ontiveros, double by Jerry Martin and single by Barry Foote.
