Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Knocking in three runs with a double and single, Bob Watson led the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. The first baseman's two-bagger plated a fourth-inning tally and then, with the score tied, 2-2, in the sixth, his single chased Butch Hobson and Jim Rice across the dish with the decisive runs.
Mariners 6, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Joe Simpson doubled for his fifth hit of the game with two out in the 12th and then came home with the winning run when a grounder by Bob Stinson went through second baseman Duane Kuiper's legs in the Mariners' 6-5 edging of the Indians. Byron McLaughlin picked up his sixth victory of the campaign with 5 1/3 innings of solid relief.
Tigers 3, Angels 2 at Detroit (night game):
Jack Billingham and Aurelio Lopez combined on a five-hitter as the Tigers downed the Angels, 3-2. The Tigers picked up two runs in the third inning on consecutive doubles by John Wockenfuss and Tom Brookens, a sacrifice by Lou Whitaker and single by Alan Trammell. Steve Kemp doubled in the fourth and eventually came home on a groundout by Champ Summers.
Royals 10, Brewers 9 at Kansas City (night game):
Overcoming a seven-run inning by Milwaukee, the Royals scored their fifth straight victory, 10-9, over the Brewers in 10 innings. After tying the contest in the bottom of the ninth on RBI singles by Darrell Porter and Frank White, the Royals won it in the 10th when Hal McRae singled with one out and went to third on a single by Amos Otis, the fifth hit by the Royal center fielder. After George Brett was walked intentionally, McRae trotted home with the winning run on a single by Porter.
[DH] Twins 4, Orioles 3 (night game) / Orioles 5, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
The Orioles and Twins divided a doubleheader, the Twins winning the curtain raiser, 4-3, and the Orioles capturing the nightcap, 5-1. In the lidlifter, the score was 3-3 in the eighth inning when Rob Wilfong drilled a one-out double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Ken Landreaux. In the second contest, Jim Palmer, getting ninth-inning relief help from Tippy Martinez, posted his first victory since June 27. Gary Roenicke slugged a two-run homer in the second and Lee May hit a solo blast in the fourth.
Yankees 7, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
A grand slam by Oscar Gamble triggered the Yankees to a 7-4 triumph over the Rangers. Gamble's blast came in the fourth inning with the Yanks trailing, 4-2, and was set up by a single by Brad Gulden, a hit batsman and a single by Willie Randolph. It was the second career bases-loaded round-tripper for Gamble, who is hitting .500 since being traded by Texas to New York.
Blue Jays 7, A's 0 at Toronto (day game):
Allowing just one hit -- a leadoff single by Jim Essian in the sixth inning -- Phil Huffman hurled the Blue Jays to a 7-0 blanking of the A's. The one-hit game was the 13th in the A.L. this season, eclipsing the league record of 12 in 1910 and 1915. The Jays scored three runs in the third on a two-run double by Rick Bosetti and RBI single by Rick Cerone. Roy Howell connected for a base-loaded homer in the sixth.
Dodgers 4, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Dusty Baker in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Dodgers to a 4-2 triumph over the Pirates. The Dodgers trailed, 2-1, in the ninth, when Gary Thomasson singled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Ted Martinez. A single by Von Joshua kayoed Buc hurler Kent Tekulve in favor of Enrique Romo. One out later, Baker connected for his 20th circuit clout of the campaign.
Astros 3, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Firing a two-hitter and striking out 12 batters, J.R. Richard pitched the Astros to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Expos. The Astros scored a run in the third inning when Rafael Landestoy walked, moved to second on a sacrifice by Richard and came home on a double by Cesar Cedeno -- his seventh hit in as many at-bats over the last two games. Craig Reynolds led off the Astro sixth with a single and Terry Puhl walked before a passed ball advanced both runners. Enos Cabell singled to center to give the Astros two more tallies.
Braves 5, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
A single by Alex Trevino drove home Lee Mazzilli from third base with one out in the ninth inning to lift the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Braves and give rookie Jeff Reardon credit for his first major league victory in the completion of the game that was suspended on June 17. In the regularly-scheduled contest, Eddie Solomon collected three hits, drove in two runs and pitched a seven-hitter as the Braves prevailed, 5-1. Solomon singled in his first three at-bats, knocking in runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Reds 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A two-run triple by Dan Driessen keyed a three-run ninth inning that carried the Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. With one out in the ninth and the Reds behind, 2-1, Dave Concepcion singled and went to second on a wild pitch. One out later, George Foster walked. After Phil starter Larry Christenson was derricked in favor of Ron Reed, Driessen tripled and continued home on a throwing error by Phil second baseman Manny Trillo.
Padres 5, Cubs 4 at San Diego (night game):
Pinch-hitter Paul Dade stroked a double off Bruce Sutter to push across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Padres a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. The score was 4-4 when Kurt Bevacqua opened the Padre 10th with a single and was forced at second by Jim Wilhelm, who moved to third on a groundout by Bill Fahey. Bill Almon received an intentional walk but pinch-hitter Dade spoiled the strategy by stroking a game-winning double.
