Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 7, Red Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Helped by four errors, the White Sox posted a 7-3 victory over the Red Sox. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when Claudell Washington tripled and continued home on a throwing error by second baseman Stan Papi. A single by Mike Colbern, double by Kevin Bell and intentional pass to Mike Squires then loaded the bases before Jorge Orta walked to force in another run. The White Sox picked up three more runs in the seventh, two coming in on an error by right fielder Jim Dwyer.
Tigers 12, Angels 2 at Detroit (night game):
Driving in three runs, Jerry Morales led the Tigers to a 12-2 lambasting of the slumping Angels, who lost their sixth game out of the last seven. Morales doubled home a run in the second inning and scored on a single by Tom Brookens. Ron LeFlore tripled in a third-inning run and came home on three walks. Morales followed with a two-run single. Singles by John Wockenfuss and Lou Whitaker plated two more runs before the inning ended.
Brewers 11, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Pounding out 15 hits, the Brewers pasted the Royals, 11-6. Gorman Thomas and Sixto Lezcano connected for solo homers in the fourth inning. The Brewers broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth on a walk, double by Ben Oglivie and sacrifice fly by Lezcano and added five runs in the seventh on four singles, two walks and an error.
Rangers 10, Yankees 2 at Texas (night game):
A five-run outburst in the sixth inning propelled the Rangers to a 10-2 rout of the Yankees. A single by Willie Montanez snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth. Jim Sundberg also singled home a run and Mickey Rivers capped the uprising with a two-run triple. Al Oliver, who tied the score with a solo homer in the fourth, opened the seventh with a double and after a walk to Buddy Bell, Montanez unloaded his first homer as a Ranger.
A's 6, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (day game):
Jim Essian belted a three-run homer and Rob Picciolo went 4-for-4 and knocked in two runs to pace the A's to a 6-3 triumph over the Blue Jays. Essian's blast came in the fifth inning and gave the A's a 3-1 lead, but the Jays tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a two-run inside-the-park homer by Alfredo Griffin, his first major league round-tripper. Jeff Newman drew a two-out walk in the sixth and came around on singles by Wayne Gross and Picciolo. The A's added a pair of eighth-inning runs on run-scoring singles by Picciolo and Rickey Henderson.
Pirates 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A four-hitter by John Candelaria carried the Pirates to a 4-1 triumph over the Dodgers. The Pirates scored a pair of unearned runs in the second after Dodger second baseman Davey Lopes bobbled Ed Ott's grounder with Bill Madlock on first base. After stealing third, Madlock scored when Phil Garner forced Ott at second. A single by Candelaria advanced Garner to third and he came home on a single by Omar Moreno. Willie Stargell connected for a two-run homer in the fifth after a single by Dave Parker.
Expos 7, Astros 6 at Montreal (night game):
A bases-loaded pass in the ninth inning was decisive as the Expos edged the Astros, 7-6. Larry Parrish led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Jerry White then walked and Joe Sambito replaced Pete Ladd on the mound for the Astros. A walk to pinch-hitter Chris Speier loaded the bases and two outs later, Warren Cromartie walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home the winning tally.
Braves 6, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
Phil Niekro leveled his record at 17-17 as the Braves captured a 6-4 decision over the Mets. Dale Murphy gave the Braves a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his 16th homer of the season and the Braves added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Bruce Benedict and sacrifice fly by Niekro. Niekro drilled an RBI single in the sixth, Jerry Royster stroked a run-scoring single in the eighth and Murphy drove in a ninth-inning tally with a sacrifice fly.
Reds 5, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Laying down a homer barrage, the Reds defeated the Phillies, 5-2. Joe Morgan cracked a leadoff homer in the fourth inning and Ray Knight led off the fifth with a round-tripper. Dan Driessen drilled a three-run shot in the sixth, following a walk to Geirge Foster and double by Johnny Bench.
Cubs 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Rick Reuschel pitched five-hit ball over eight innings to register his seventh straight victory and Bruce Sutter recorded his 34th save as the Cubs won over the Padres, 3-1. The Cubs scored their first run in the fifth inning on a double by Mike Vail, throwing error by Padre first baseman Gene Tenace and single by Jerry Martin. Another marker followed in the seventh on successive doubles by Martin and Tim Blackwell. Vail batted in the Cubs' insurance run with a single in the eighth.
Cardinals 2, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
The Cardinals edged the Giants, 2-1, behind the combined pitching of Bob Forsch and Mark Littell. George Hendrick broke the scoreless tie with a homer in the seventh inning. The Cards added the decisive tally in the same frame on a single by Ken Reitz, double by Ken Oberkfell and infield hit by Garry Templeton.
