[DH] Indians 5, Mariners 4 (day game) / Indians 2, Mariners 1 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians scalped the Mariners twice, 5-4 and 2-1. The Tribe staged a Garrison finish in the curtain raiser, getting five runs in the ninth inning. A two-run homer by Andre Thornton triggered the winning rally, a two-out, two-run double by Mike Hargrove tied the score and a single by Rick Manning drove home the winning tally. The Indians won the nightcap on a two-run homer by Toby Harrah and the combined six-hit pitching of Rick Waits and Victor Cruz. Harrah's clout came after a two-out walk to Manning in the third inning.

Tigers 2, Angels 1 at Detroit (night game):
Pushing across a run in the sixth inning, the Tigers edged the sagging Angels, 2-1. The loss was Angels' 11th in their last 15 games. Lou Whitaker led off the Tiger sixth with a single, was sacrificed to second by Alan Trammell and scored to snap a 1-1 tie when Steve Kemp grounded a single to center. The first Tiger run had come in the second stanza on a single by Jason Thompson, two walks and an infield out.

Royals 18, Brewers 8 at Kansas City (night game):
Piling up 19 hits, the Royals thrashed the Brewers, 18-8. Darrell Porter doubled home two runs and Clint Hurdle tripled home two others in the first inning. Pete LaCock connected for a three-run homer in the third frame and Amos Otis and George Brett cracked consecutive round-trippers in the fourth. The Brewers' Gorman Thomas clouted a pair of two-run homers and Sixto Lezcano and Don Money added solo shots. The Brewers used three regular players as pitchers after Jim Slaton, Reggie Cleveland and Paul Mitchell were kayoed. Third baseman Sal Bando pitched three innings, allowing three hits and two runs. Jim Gantner, also an infielder, pitched the seventh and catcher Buck Martinez surrendered a run in the eighth.

[DH] Orioles 4, Twins 0 (day game) / Orioles 7, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Getting big pitching and big hitting, the Orioles swept a doubleheader from the Twins, 4-0 and 7-4. Scott McGregor unfurled his second shutout of the season in the opener. The Orioles scored once in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Al Bumbry and twice in the fourth on a triple by Doug DeCinces Eddie Murray clouted three homers in the nightcap and drove in all seven runs. The Bird first sacker connected with two mates aboard in the fifth inning, with one man on base in the seventh and again with one man on in the ninth.

Yankees 7, Rangers 5 at Texas (night game):
Ron Guidry, getting ninth-inning relief help from Rich Gossage, received credit for his eighth straight victory as the Yankees downed the Rangers, 7-5. The Yankees exploded for five runs in the second inning, first three coming home on a homer by George Scott. Bucky Dent followed Scott's blast with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a grounder by Fred Stanley. A single by Brad Gulden and double by Willie Randolph closed out the inning.

A's 6, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
Driving in three runs, Mario Guerrero paced the A's to a 6-4 decision over the Blue Jays. The shortstop stroked an RBI single in the first inning and keyed a four-run rally in the third with a two-run single.

Pirates 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A four-run outburst in the eighth inning gave the Pirates a 4-1 triumph over the Dodgers. With one out in the eighth, Steve Nicosia doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Matt Alexander, who scored on a pinch-hit single by Willie Stargell. Ed Ott ran for Stargell, moved to second on a walk to Omar Moreno and both runners came home on a double by Phil Garner. A single by Bill Robinson capped the rally.

Expos 5, Astros 3 at Montreal (night game):
A three-run homer by Ellis Valentine triggered the Expos to a 5-3 triumph over the Astros. The Expos trailed, 2-1, in the sixth inning, when Tony Perez stroked a two-out single and went to second on a passed ball. After a walk to Gary Carter, Valentine unloaded his 21st circuit swat of the season. The Expos added a run in the seventh on consecutive singles by Warren Cromartie, Dave Cash and Andre Dawson. Larry Parrish also homered for the Expos.

Braves 5, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
The Mets tumbled to their seventh straight defeat, losing to the Braves, 5-4. Three Met errors led to a run in the second inning and singles by Jerry Royster, Dale Murphy and Jeff Burroughs produced another in the third. The Braves tallied twice in the sixth, one run coming on a triple by Rowland Office and the other on a single by Pepe Frias. What proved to be the Braves' winning marker came in the seventh on a triple by Royster and groundout by Burroughs.

Reds 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Posting their eighth straight victory, the Reds prevailed over the Phillies, 7-6. Ray Knight singled in the sixth inning, moved to third on a single by Hector Cruz and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Rick Auerbach. The Phillies took an early 6-2 lead, but the Reds tied the count in the fifth with a four-run rally that was capped by a two-run homer by Johnny Bench.

Padres 3, Cubs 1 at San Diego (night game):
Gaylord Perry scattered six hits and pitched the Padres to a 3-1 triumph over the Cubs. The Padres scored twice in the first inning. Gene Richards opened with a double, reached third when the ball was mishandled on the relay and scored on an infield hit by Ozzie Smith. A single by Kurt Bevacqua produced a second tally. The Padres registered their last marker in the third on a single by Gene Tenace and double by Bevacqua.

Cardinals 5, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Recording his seventh complete game of the season, rookie John Fulgham permitted only five hits as the Cardinals whipped the Giants, 5-1. The Redbirds picked up their first run in the second inning on singles by Tony Scott and Ken Reitz and an infield out by Ken Oberkfel,l and made it 2-0 in the fourth on a homer by George Hendrick. Singles by Scott, Ken Oberkfell and Fulgham and a triple by Garry Templeton produced three more tallies in the eighth.
