Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Twins 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Although needing relief help from Don Stanhouse, Mike Flanagan received credit for his 19th victory -- tops in the majors -- as the Orioles edged the Twins, 5-4. The Orioles trailed, 2-1, entering the seventh, but went ahead on a leadoff walk to Lee May, double by Gary Roenicke and single by Rich Dauer that scored both runners. Singles by Rick Dempsey, Kiko Garcia and Ken Singleton then produced two more runs.

Rangers 6, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
Doc Medich fired a two-hitter and pitched the Rangers to a 6-0 whitewashing of the Red Sox. The Rangers opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mickey Rivers and Bump Wills opened with singles. After Wills stole second, Rivers scored on an infield out by Al Oliver and Wills raced home on a sacrifice fly by Richie Zisk. Oliver led off the Rangers' seventh with a circuit clout and Zisk drilled a run-scoring double in the ninth.

Brewers 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
A bases-loaded walk in the 12th inning forced home the decisive run as the Brewers shaded the White Sox, 4-3. Paul Molitor led off the stanza with a single and, two outs later, Gorman Thomas received an intentional walk. A single by Ben Oglivie loaded the bases and Lezcano drew a pass on a 3-2 pitch.

Indians 7, Angels 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Blasting Nolan Ryan, the Indians powered their way to a 7-1 pounding of the Angels, who suffered their fifth straight defeat. The Indians jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-loaded double by Ron Hassey and sent Ryan to the showers in the fifth when they added two runs on a single by Duane Kuiper. Toby Harrah drilled a two-run homer in the sixth.

Tigers 8, A's 7 at Detroit (night game):
Two homers by Jerry Morales paced the Tigers to an 8-7 decision over the A's. His first round-tripper came with a mate aboard in the fifth inning and put the Tigers ahead, 6-5. After the A's tied the game in the eighth, Morales led off the bottom of the frame with another circuit clout. The Tigers then added what proved to be their winning run on a triple by Jason Thompson and single by Lynn Jones.

Royals 8, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
The Royals moved into first place in the West division with an 8-3 triumph over the Yankees as Larry Gura yielded seven hits in his route-going performance. Darrell Porter triggered the attack with a three-run homer in the first inning. The Royals picked up another run in the second on a triple by Pete LaCock and single by Frank White and extended their lead to 6-0 in the third frame on a double by Al Cowens, single by LaCock, a fielder's choice and a single by White.

Mariners 8, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
Mike Parrott broke the Mariners' club record for victories with his 13th of the season, beating the Blue Jays, 8-2. The Mariners tallied three times in the fifth inning on a walk, double by Larry Cox, triple by Mario Mendoza and sacrifice fly by Julio Cruz. They added four runs in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Mendoza, Ruppert Jones and Tom Paciorek and a throwing error by third baseman Roy Howell. The Mariners' former win mark was 12 by Glenn Abbott in 1977.

Cubs 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bruce Sutter registered his 35th save of the season as the Cubs prevailed over the Dodgers, 4-1. The Cubs scored twice in the first inning on a walk to Scot Thompson, single by Bill Buckner and triple by Larry Biittner. They added two more runs in the ninth on singles by Steve Macko and pinch-hitter Steve Ontiveros.

Giants 3, Cardinals 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Four-hit pitching by Ed Whitson carried the Giants to a 3-2 triumph over the Cardinals. The winning run was driven home with a pinch-single by Willie McCovey. Roger Metzger singled in the seventh inning and was forced by Dennis Littlejohn. After a sacrifice by Whitson and pass to Bill North, McCovey batted for Joe Strain and rapped his single to break the 2-2 tie.
