Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The Twins used four of their 10 hits off Jim Palmer to defeat the Orioles, 3-2. The Orioles scored first on singles by Pat Kelly and Billy Smith around a stolen base in the second inning before the Twins nicked Palmer for two runs in the fifth on doubles by Hosken Powell and Danny Goodwin and single by Butch Wynegar. Dave Edwards then led off the seventh with a homer for what proved to be the Twins' deciding run. The Orioles had a homer by Doug DeCinces in their half for their sixth hit off Paul Hartzell. Mike Marshall pitched the last two innings and gave up two more hits but prevented further scoring and picked up his 29th save of the season.

Rangers 5, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
With two out, Mickey Rivers scored from first base on a hit-and-run single by Buddy Bell in the seventh inning to bring the Rangers a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox. Butch Hobson drove in two runs for the Red Sox with a single and homer. Willie Montanez batted in a run for the Rangers with a double in the first inning and tied the score at 4-4 with a homer in the sixth. Rivers singled in the seventh. After Bump Wills and Al Oliver flied out, Bell looped his single and picked up his second RBI of the game when the speedy Rivers scored.

White Sox 4, Brewers 3 at Chicago (night game):
Claudell Washington and Jim Morrison each drove in two runs to enable the White Sox to defeat the Brewers, 4-3, in a game called with two out in the bottom half of the fifth inning after rain put the field in an unplayable condition. Washington homered after a single by Lemon in the second inning. The Brewers went ahead with three runs in the fourth, but the White Sox came back with a pair in their half. Washington singled and stole second. After an infield hit by Greg Pryor, on which Washington held second, Washington and Pryor worked a double steal. Both then scored on a double by Morrison.

Angels 7, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Carney Lansford belted homers in his first three trips to the plate and Dan Ford added a round-tripper, but the Angels had to overcome a grand slam by Andre Thornton before defeating the Indians, 7-4. The Angels' homers all came with the bases empty for a 4-0 lead. Thornton's smash off Jim Barr in the sixth inning tied the score. The Angels broke the deadlock with two runs in the eighth. Willie Aikens walked and took second on a wild pitch by Wayne Garland. Brian Downing sacrificed and when Garland threw wildly to first, Aikens scored and Downing took second. After two out, Bert Campaneris bunted for a hit to Toby Harrah, who threw wildly to first, allowing Downing to score. Another error by Jim Norris enabled the Angels to add a run in the ninth.

A's 6, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
The A's, who were helped by two errors, scored three runs in the 10th inning and defeated the Tigers, 6-3. Wayne Gross and Dave Revering homered for the A's, while the Tigers had a two-run smash by Alan Trammell to tie the score at 3-3 in the eighth. Dave Chalk opened the A's 10th with a single and gave way to pinch-runner Mike Edwards. Rob Picciolo sacrificed Edwards to second and reached first himself when his bunt was mishandled by Tiger reliever Aurelio Lopez. Rickey Henderson singled, scoring Edwards and sending Picciolo to third. Henderson then stole second and when Tiger catcher Lance Parrish made a wild throw, both Picciolo and Henderson scored on the error.

Royals 9, Yankees 8 at New York (day game):
After staking the Yankees to a five-run lead in the first inning, the Royals battled back to gain a 9-8 victory. Rich Gale, who started for the Royals, gave up a hit and two walks to load the bases before departing with none out. After Al Hrabosky relieved, the Yankees scored on two infield outs, a single by Graig Nettles and homer by Jim Spencer. Hrabosky settled down to pitch four scoreless stanzas while the Royals wiped out their deficit and went ahead, 8-5, with the aid of two-run homers by George Brett and Al Cowens. The Royals added their deciding run in the seventh on a single by Pete LaCock and triple by Amos Otis. The Yankees rallied for three runs in their half off Gary Christenson, who made his major league debut, but Renie Martin retired the last six batters to save the game.

Mariners 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
Willie Horton hit a homer in the ninth inning to spark a two-run rally and then knocked in another run with a double in the 10th to give the Mariners a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. After Horton's homer, Dan Meyer singled with one out. Tom Buskey replaced Phil Huffman on the mound for the Blue Jays and allowed the tying run on a double by Tom Paciorek and infield out by Joe Simpson. In the 10th, Julio Cruz singled and took second on a grounder by Ruppert Jones. After a pass to Bruce Bochte, Horton cracked his tie-breaking double.

Phillies 6, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Three homers, including the game-winning blast by Manny Trillo with a man on base in the ninth inning, enabled the Phillies to defeat the Braves, 6-4. After the Phillies took a 2-0 lead, Dale Murphy tied the score with a homer following a single by Bob Horner in the fourth inning. Greg Luzinski sent the Phillies ahead again with a solo shot in the fifth, but the Braves pulled even with a circuit clout by Barry Bonnell in the sixth. Mike Schmidt hit his 42nd homer in the seventh to put the Phillies in front once more. Trillo's round-tripper in the ninth then proved decisive when the Braves came back with one run in their half of the ninth.

Astros 3, Mets 1 at Houston (night game):
Clinching his victory with a homer, J.R. Richard pitched the Astros back into first place in the West division by defeating the Mets, 3-1. The Astros, who moved ahead of the Reds, opened the scoring in the first inning with a run on a single by Rafael Landestoy, a stolen base and a single by Jose Cruz. The Mets tied the score with an unearned run on an error by Cesar Cedeno in the fourth. Cedeno made up for his miscue by hitting a triple in the seventh and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Denny Walling. Richard, who pitched his eighth consecutive complete game and posted his eighth victory in his last nine decisions, added his homer in the eighth.

Dodgers 5, Cubs 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Don Sutton moved ahead of Christy Mathewson into 14th place on the all-time list of strikeouts when the Dodgers' righthander fanned seven, bringing his career total to 2,511, in a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. Sutton got off with a shaky start, giving up three runs in the first inning, but the Dodgers came back with a matching trio in the second. Steve Garvey broke the tie in the fifth. Davey Lopes walked, Bill Russell singled and both scored on a double by Garvey. Dave Kingman hit his 42nd homer for the Cubs in the sixth.

Expos 7, Reds 2 at Montreal (night game):
Ellis Valentine and Andre Dawson each smashed a bases-loaded triple to power the Expos to a 7-2 victory over the Reds and snap Tom Seaver's 11-game winning streak. In the first inning, Warren Cromartie singled. With two out, Rusty Staub also singled. Seaver uncorked a wild pitch, allowing both runners to advance, and then passed Gary Carter to load the bases before Valentine came to the plate and hit his triple. Seaver was kayoed in the second. Jim Mason singled and was forced by David Palmer. Singles by Cromartie and Dave Cash loaded the bases and Dawson cleared the sacks with his three-bagger. Staub added a run with a sacrifice fly.

Cardinals 5, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
For the second night in succession, Keith Hernandez supplied the Cardinals' winning hit, smashing a three-run homer in the seventh inning to beat the Padres, 5-3. Hernandez, who had three hits, also singled in the sixth and crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Randy Jones and single by Tony Scott to tie the score at 2-2. With one out in the seventh, Silvio Martinez singled and Garry Templeton doubled. After Jerry Mumphrey grounded out, with the runners holding their bases, Hernandez smashed his homer. The Padres' last run came on a circuit clout by Bill Fahey in the ninth.

[DH] Pirates 5, Giants 3 (day game) / Pirates 7, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The slugging of Willie Stargell and Dale Berra in the first game and the hitting of Lee Lacy behind the pitching of Jim Bibby in the second game carried the Pirates to a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Giants, 5-3 and 7-2. Stargell hit two solo homers in the opener and Berra accounted for two other runs with a homer and sacrifice fly. An error by Phil Garner enabled the Giants to score three unearned runs off Bruce Kison in the first inning before the Pirates' bats swung into action. Bibby tossed a five-hitter in the nightcap. The Pirates started their scoring in the fourth inning with a single by Bill Madlock, a stolen base and a double by Manny Sanguillen. Singles by Lacy and Bill Robinson, an infield out by Madlock and error by Darrell Evans added two runs in the sixth. Lacy homered with a man on base in the seventh and added his third RBI of the game with a single in the ninth.
